Jon Rothstein: Mullin Likely To Take SJU Job

It's not about the recruits recognizing mullin as a HOF, it's about Mullin using his connections to hire a killer staff. And the Eddie Jordan / Mullin comparison made me laugh out loud.

This sounds like any other poster we've read. He has a right to his opinion...I hope he doesn't get paid for it.

There are going to be skeptics. Can't blame them, although I'm not really sure what Eddie Jordan has to do with Mullin.

Hopefully someone prints this out and shows Mullin.

did we lose a whole section of this thread...it was like 20 pages and is now 2?????

I actually think this is anew thread. I came on a few minutes ago and the old thread nor this one wasn't listed.

For those worried about the recruiting aspect, it is worth noting that Mullin was very close with Manute Bol--so close that Bol named one of his sons after him. Manute passed away in 2010, but is survived by his youngest son who is currently a 6'10 freshman that is drawing comparisons to Durant. It's a few years down the road, but I'm sure that Bol was not the only father of an elite recruit that Mullin won over during his 30 years in the NBA.

Not only was Bol a Warriors teammate (who was allowed by Don Nelson to launch 3's) but also was a teammate of one of Chris' brothers at the University of Bridgeport.

I just asked my 13 year old son, "Do you know anything about Chris Mullin?" His response, "Yeah.... The dude who played for St. John's and the Warriors."

So, much for kids not recognizing Mullin.

**Now, I may have mentioned something to him about Mullin and St. John's awhile ago, but to my knowledge I don't recall.**

As I said earlier my 11 year old son knows him from NBA2K15. He is one of the legends that give advice to your players.

All three of my kids know who he is including my youngest who is 11. The fact that I am a St. John's diehard fan, have several of his bobble head dolls and they have met him might have something to do with it. :)

Dink, you're a huge SJU fan ... how could your son not know about Mullin?

I share the concerns that others have posted re: Mullin.

However, I have come to the conclusion that, if it doesn't work out, then Mullin just joins the ranks of many other SJU coaches before him.

If it works, I think we all agree it's the best thing that could ever happen to this program. Even more so then if Roberts or Lavin had worked out (and Lavin was not a total failure, IMO). GO CHRIS!

There's a guy I went to school with who graduated with a degree in accounting. He did my taxes for a few years after he launched his business. His company became huge, with way over a hundred outlets, even listed on the stock exchange at one point. The company name would be familiar to most of you, but I won't mention it here. PM me if you want to know.

At one point I was considering starting a business, and in going over the particulars with him, asked him, "But what if it fails?". He didn't hesitate a second before he said "If if fails, you go back to what you were doing before that. And if that happens, you are way ahead of anyone else you know because you tried and they didn't. It's no embarrassment."

I carried that advice my whole career, and eventually started a different business. For Mullin, the advice is the same. There is no embarrassment in trying and failing, but there is in never trying. Good luck, Coach.

Good news. Based on some other quotes, it sounds like Sampson and Diallo knows who he is, and we know that Rysheed and CO know who he is. That's really all he needs if he can get them all to stay or sign on. From there, he can get the right staff to recruit and hopefully let his coaching do the talking. Folks will know who he is very quickly once this hits all the news outlets. A few highlights, and it will all make sense to these kids. It would be interesting to see your son's and his friends' reactions to Mullin a few days after his hiring is announced and they see all the hype.
