Jon Rothstein: Mullin Likely To Take SJU Job

It's not about the recruits recognizing mullin as a HOF, it's about Mullin using his connections to hire a killer staff. And the Eddie Jordan / Mullin comparison made me laugh out loud.

Eddie Jordan was a big time player for a great Rutgers team and an NBA coach. No need to disparage him despite his struggles at Rutgers.

I'll ask once more, is Chris andJax good friends? Could mark be the x and o's guy?

Won't happen, move on.

Excuse my ignorance but who is your new avatar?

Matt Abdelmassih. Former team manager under Norm, who has made quite a name for himself as a recruiter and tireless worker at Iowa State. I think some on this board are getting a tiny bit carried away about him, but he certainly is a promising young coach that won't be outworked and is a very good recruiter. He's close with Mullin. He's from Pennsylvania originally. Matt and Slice recruiting for Mullin would just be silly good.

and let's face it he certainly didn't light it up for Norm,

I began this weekend preparing to be disappointed soon. Lavin out. 3-4 years of rebuilding. God forbid we hire one more guy who would load up on excuses and proclaim progress even though we were losing. Even the Lavin years of moderate success after the Norm years of a plummeting program after the Jarvis disintegration of a program seemed really nice. After all, we were competitive most of the time in the long ago Lavin era, right?

Reporters who were against the move yesterday have literally turned the page and are on board. So many of us are excited, can't wait to see what recruits may come here now. One thing for certain, I believe. Mullin will be spotted in far more moldy gyms that smell of sweat and socks than he will be seen in trendy restaurants. You ask me, I think he'd rather be in a couple of gyms recruiting kids and grabbing a dirty water dog between stops, than dining at Nobu.

Some people complained that Lavin couldn't find the St. John's campus, that Monasch had no control over him, Lavin lived in Manhattan, not particularly an easy commute to campus. Not sure where Mullin will live, but I would say it's a pretty strong guess that there will be a hoop nearby.

Jay Wright was raised as a candidate when the Kentucky job opened up. Politely he declined, saying "I already have my dream job." I hope Chris feels the same way, because for me, the others who occupied the position of coach since Coach Carnesecca retired were merely keeping a seat warm for Chris.

Well said beast. I'm trying my hardest to be "cautiously" optimistic, but I've already thrown "caution" to the wind.

@TimBontemps: However, @HowieKussoy writes Barry Rohrrsen could join Mullin's staff. Would be a heck of a place for him to start:http://t.co/t9SlPJzTCm

Did they attend Xaverian together? Slice would be an awesome hire. Watch how quickly those NYC High School and AAU coaches become oh so cooperative.

That's what I thought, as well. I thought they attended HS together.

Slice graduated in 1978. Mullin transferred from Power Memorial to Xavieran in 1979 and graduated in 1981. They just missed each other as students.

Assuming Jack Alesi still coached both.

That was a great Rutgers team which I followed closely because all of thier homes games were televised on NJ UHF channel 50 here in NYC. Dabney, Jordan, Copeland, Bailey and the great Phil Sellers. Pretty sure that was the only year in history that 2 undefeated teams made it to the final 4. Rutger and Indiana, who finished undefeated as we know.

The board is especially active tonight, with posts coming in every minute or so. No doubt we're all up and online because we're waiting -- and have been waiting all evening -- for breaking news about Chris accepting the job. Well, at this point (almost midnight), something tells me it's not going to come tonight. So, buenas noches, fellow Redmen. Time to sign off and get some sleep. Hopefully we'll hear some positive news tomorrow morning.

I have made a total flip flop on OB from knucklehead of the year to MVP.
Without his selfish act of stupity SJU might win that SDST game and saved Lavin's job.
I was not a Lavin hater but I am really looking forward to Chris taking over.

And no doubt the two would have crossed paths as alumni.
Alesi, btw is a great guy and coach. He really understood his role in the recruiting process. It'd be nice to see Xaverian get some more talent to the school the next few years. Maybe Chris coming home will help them out.

I think It's Alesi who Mullin spoke of when he said his coach took him to see the Knicks at MSG and watching Ernie Grunfeld play, said to Chris, "You know, that could be you. You are good enough to play in the NBA." Mullin says up to that point, he never thought he might be good enough to be an NBA player. Turns out to be a gigantic understatement, but hearing Chris retell that story shows what a humble and honest guy he is, and has incredible appreciation for the people who helped make him what he is.

Maybe not, their is talk on SHU board that an insider said this deal was in the works 2 months ago.
I was at Mullin HOF breakfast and their seemed to be and eerie silence regarding Coach Lavin that
I found mystifying. You never know.

I think it was on one of those Fran Healy shows on SC when I heard him say the same thing about Alesi and that talk. I think he said the talk took place in the car on the way to the game. After all the BS we've had to endure here over the past 15+ years, it will be so refreshing to have a straight shooter here.

Xaverian had a very good team this year. No high D1 talent, but some very good ballplayers. Saw them a couple of times. Bringing Chris and possibly Slice back here can only help them, You may know, they are going co-ed next year. I think Alesi's brother is the current President of the school.

Sometimes taking gambles are necessary in order to get to where you want to be. If the Green Bay Packers did not take a huge gamble on a very unknown defensive coach from the NY Giants to restore their program, where might they be today? As we all know, that big gamble was the "great Vince Lombardi" and the Green Bay Packers are one of the most esteemed football teams in the NFL because of him!
Great Hire! I am so excited that I think I will write out a check!
I know nobody else probably gives a s--t but as a huge GB Packer fan must make two corrections. V Lombardi was the offensive coordinator while Tom Landry was the D coordinator and both were highly thought of and were under consideration to take over as Giants HC from Jim Lee Howell before leaving for GB and Dallas respectively and becoming HOF coaches.

Two questions for the group here

1) Is there any blue print out there of a for Alumni star coming back to his alma matter after a successful nba / front office career (with no actual coaching experience) and being successful at that program? I don't follow the NBA much, so I'm curious to see where this has worked before.

2) Does anyone feel we should have at least interviewed a current head coach and been able to compare the candidates to see who would be the best fit? I only ask because you usually you interview more than one person for a head coaching job.

Thanks in advance with your response.

Fred Hoiberg was a star at Iowa State, had a decent NBA career, and then worked in the front office of the Timberwolves. He then returned to Iowa St as the head coach and has completely rebuilt the program. The key is having the right assistants.
My feeling is that the Administration wanted to hire a coach that everyone would rally around. If you have been following this board, you know that there were many different opinions as to who should be hired or even if Lavin should be let go. Mullin's hiring will have a unifying effect on the St Johns fan base.

Do you really see Mark Jackson agreeing to being an Assistaant Coach in College?

He's not coaching now, and maybe if he was buddies with Mullin that maybe he would, but nm I didn't know that I was gonna get killed for asking.
I guess he really is hated on these boards

Not hated...he willed himself into being an outstanding player...an outstanding tv analyst...and a pretty good coach at Golden State.

You just have to ask yourself a basic human resources question. Why would someone go from being an NBA coach to an assistant at a program that's been struggling to keep up with the big boys in the 21st century.
