Johnnies Tidbits

I've often compared Joel to Shawnelle Scott.

But I don't think Shawnelle ever had that same type of explosion to the hoop.
I'm not sure he had that explosion to the hoop 14 months ago. Coaches like to say they left programs in much better shape than they received them. CMA can definitely say he left Joel in much better shape than he found him. I'm expecting a big year from him. And if by some miracle of miracles he wanted to use his COVID year we'd be sooooooo good in 23-24.

100%. Frankly Joel was languishing at Fordham and not getting better. He was nowhere close to playing for CMA’s team entering last season and by mid-late season he was catching on. I expect this year he comes in a ton more ready to play physically and mentally. I too expect a good year from him.

He really paid the price physically. I saw him a bit in high school and he had ability, but was way out of shape. Kudos to Joel & hoops and conditioning staff on where he is today.

I really feel that Davey Jones is gonna be an absolute killer this year and our most important recruit transitioning out of the Champagnie era. Kid is still even raw but an animal inside and outside. Gonna be hard for teams to stop him because he does it at multiple levels. Love this kid having already seen him in the big East and now on our side.

IMO I think he will be like a Bashir on steroids and much better
I liked Bashir but Jones is a much better player. His fit with Mike Anderson will be seamless. He’s a kid who plays hard the whole game and is a mismatch because he can do the dirty work on top of playing on the wing. I expect him to be a serious contender for BE POY, the fit is just too good.

It’s interesting, you could look at it two ways. He played behind the BE leading scorer so he wasn’t gonna be the primary focus of the offense. He also wasn’t the primary focus of the opposing defense. Will him being the #1 option give him the ability to break out as a big (bigger) scorer? Or will being #1 on the other teams scouting report make it tougher for him than we might want to hope.

I think he’ll lead us in scoring but also think there’s quite a range on where that could end. We will be spreading it out this year. Regardless we got ourselves a proven BE difference maker.
