Champ is leading the BE in scoring and he is the ONLY player in the country averaging 2+ steals and 1+ blocks a game.
And that's after a slump that lasted forever in fan years. Not even sure how long it was in real time.

Let's see where he finishes. It has been a frustrating season compared to expectations despite the numbers he has put up. His numbers are down pretty much across the board from last season. Including his FG% which is now at 41%.

On the other hand the things not effected by shooting are pretty much all up. Career bests in assists, steals, blocks, and career lows in TOs and Fouls.

Aaron Wheeler now 7th in Big East in 3 point % (.419) and of the top 10 in 3 pt shooting he has the best 2 point fg % at .569
Still can't believe that LJSA clown didn't want Wheeler back next season.
To the point of next season- i keep seeing him listed as Grad Student.... do you guys know for a fact that he is even eligible to return next season?

Yes Wheeler, has another year and was quoted when he committed he planned on playing them both.  I am not going to look for the quote but he spent four years at Purdue including as a redshirt his freshman year.  He did get his degree and is indeed a graduate student.  This year is the redshirt season he gets back and if he decides and we have the room (we will) next year would be his COVID season.

FYI, Coburn sat out one year as a transfer to Hofstra but used that “fifth year last year at Hofstra.  He is a grad student this year using the COVID year as is Smith.

Really hope Wheeler decides to play another and he stays here.   More than proven his worth and ability.

Creates many options.  Wheeler at 3/4, Storr at 2/3, Wusu at supersub, Pinzon at 2/1, Stanley or Traore at 4, 2 bigs, + more to come. Posh at point with Kolby King as backup.

Thanks for this, SJU85. Am I correct in thinking Mathis also has an extra (COVID) year if he wants to return?

Yes Mathis has his “COVID” year of he wants and St. John’s wants him to stay.

Mathis relieves the stress of us trying to find a kid in the spring who knows the system, but I've never once thought he'd be back next season. Of course that means nothing.

LJSA, you've been consistent on that and may be 100% right. Personally, I'd love to have Posh, Wusu, Wheeler, Mathis, Soriano, Stanley, Pinzon & Nyiwe back. There'd be no excuse for a slow start then for sure lol.

I still think we need another true Big for next season.

Champagnie is the Big East Player of the Week:

BIG EAST Player of the Week
Julian Champagnie, St. John’s, G-F, Jr. – Champagnie averaged 29.0 points, 5.0 steals, 4.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists in a 2-0 week. He had 31 points, seven boards, three assists and a career-high seven steals in a 91-67 win against Butler. The junior shot 48.8 percent from the field and was 12-of-12 from the foul line. Champagnie leads the league in scoring with a 19.2 mark in all games and 18.4 in BIG EAST play.

Julian was also Dick Vitale's National Player of the Week. Congratulations and best wishes as his journey continues.

Can some one post the
latest scholarship distribution chart? Confused about the Covid year and how it impacted squad.

This year shows how huge turnover effects a program that plays an aggressive pressing/trapping defense. Hope we do not have another mass exodus. Some concern over Posh. No facts just ptsd

Including the COVID year gained by all players who played last year, remaining eligibility after this season is as follows:

Smith and Coburn - This is their final year of eligibility
Wheeler, Mathis and Nyiwe - One more year of  eligibility
Champagnie, Soriano - Two more years of eligibility
Alexander, Adae-Wusu, Pinzon and Stanley -Three more years of eligibility
Traore - Four years of eligibility

Pinzon has only played 8 games. I'm assuming a redshirt is coming.

They would have to petition the NCAA. There used to be a formula for a medical redshirt who has played, it included the number of games played by the player and what that percentage equates to when compared to the number of games played by the team and when his last game was played.  I believe the eight games played would be probably right on the cut off line.

I assume COVID and a related heart issue is a good enough reason for a redshirt petition to pass pretty smoothly through the NCAA office. Then again, it is the NCAA.

As I was reading the first part of your post I said to myself “But this is the NCAA”  before I got to the ending,

Not sure it was a definitive heart issue another side effect.

As
far as the NCAA goes, I thought it was a very reasonable petition to allow players who are redshirting this season to play for help boost a roster that was depleted due to COVID-19 and not  have that be a. Cause of the player losing the redshirt year but of course the NCAA in their “infinite wisdom” mixed that petition.
