Per Troy Mauriello

St. John’s players not named Aaron Wheeler or Dylan Addae-Wusu are shooting 41-171 (23.9%) from 3 in Big East play.

Despite this, St. John’s is attempting the 3rd-most 3-pt FG per game (22.2) in Big East play
Unfortunately a byproduct of an unstructured, throw caution to the wind offensive game plan. Without the helter skelter defense generating offensive, we are what we are. Difficult to compete in any high level conference with any long term success.

We have the highest number of field goal attempts in the conference. Our three-point attempts as a percentage of total field goal attempts is among the lowest in the conference.
In other words, Troy Mauriello is an idiot.

To summarize, we can't shoot threes, but we are bad at layups also.

I wonder if there is a stat on number of layups missed. We have to be leading the nation!

SJU is 327th in the country at defending opponents 3pt FG %.

So what is the team doing wrong?  Over-helping when the ball is passed to the interior?  It seems like the help defenders collapse way too much. to help.   I don't know enough about the mechanics of defenses to understand what they are doing... or what the offenses are doing to them to force this.

Is the opposing offenses, running picks / the defense is over-switching, that leaves guys open? It's a sincere question - I just don't know about bball defense enough to really know what they are doing too much of, or too little of.

We make up for it by sucking from the FT line.

As byproduct of missed layups, my eyes tell me we likely lead the league in missed 2nd chance put backs, which are just another reason our % of FG attempts from 3 might be lower

while proud alum thinks Anderson runs an amazing offense, reality is that its relatively unstructured.

Mullin's offense was genius compared to what we are doing if only because we keep doing the same crap that doesn't yield results to get ball in hole..

thank you for posting the statistics but truth be told it is shameful to see that. Just think if we were only the 300th in the country we would have a few more wins. So we are horrible offensively as has been repeatedly pointed out and horrible defensively. And this is with a coach who is supposed to be a great defensive coach. SMH.

We don’t close out with the urgency that teams like Nova do. For much of last nights game, our offense was operating 22 feet from the basket because they are all in on defense.

There was one play that, in my mind, epitomizes the lack of urgency. Champagnie’s man was running the baseline. Instead of chasing him with a sense of urgency, he told someone else who happened to be in proximity (may have been Wusu) to follow him which by that time was too late. Needless to say, the player received the ball in the opposite corner with a wide open shot.

Unfortunately, many of us thought that we had depth this season.  What we had were numbers.  Uhhh!

STATE OF THE UNION
  • We suck at taking three pointers
  • We suck at defending three pointers
  • We suck at free throw shooting
  • We suck at layups
  • We suck at defensive rebounding
  • Our two best players are hurt
  • The refs hate us
  • Pinzon is still out
  • Our arena seats have no backs
*Otherwise, the dance team still rocks and we're all looking forward to Saturday!  /media/kunena/emoticons/unsure.png

How about …… the coaching staff is suspect when it comes to end game strategies?

We also bought into the idea that Anderson’s teams come on latter in the season, which even if true, in todays necessary resume for entrance to the Dance won’t cut it.

Josh Roberts with 16 points and 14 rebounds for Manhattan last night (vs. Monmouth).  I am a fan of Josh and happy he's playing well.

I can only speak for myself but I liked all of the kids who left and felt worse with each passing announcement that another kid had entered the transfer portal. However what bothered me by far the most was the departure of Williams, Earlington and Roberts who would all have been seniors and committed during the tough rebuilding years Coach Mulllin faced. Their exits really hurt but To me they will always be Redmen.
