Jermaine Lawrence

The fact that he is down to 4 very local schools is probably a good sign that he wants to be home close to his dad. It's not like he is listing uconn, nova and providence.

Hopefully the whole mid major thing is just a front to show they are going thru some due diligence.

Handler is the wild card. Hopefully she sees the benefits of SJU outweighing those other local programs. I believe we get him, but any process with her involved may defy logic. I was told yesterday that Lavin is working hard on preparing for potential appeal. Tea leaves look positive in my opinion for getting him. An appeal is always a crap shoot, but the rationale seems reasonable. Fingers crossed.

She is the only reason he did not sign with SJ so she screwed him once already. If he lets it happen again we would be better off than having that kind of baggage around the program. Kid needs time to develop and it would be like getting Jakarr back without the hops or offense.

If we get him, staff will have their hands full with handler. Apparently she was no day at the beach with Cronin & staff. That said, maybe she fades in this relationship as JL matures. If not, staff will have to deal with her. All in all, I believe he is worth the headache. Staff gets paid well to deal with such crap. Easy for me to say. :)

100%. Kid has major upside and IF he gets the waiver they to me are right there with Nova for the BE top spot. Nova, Georgetown and SJU are top 3 hands down.

BTW-Zags reporting he is set to visit this weekend. My guess is he probably fits the Manhattan visit tomorrow, in between the Iona visit and the SJU visit. Then he decides.

I excpect Iona to be more of a driveby :)

That is exactly what I've been thinking. It's unfathomable to me that a top-25 player, whose handler wanted a documentary made about his freshman year in college, would settle for a mid-major. And as another poster mentioned, Lavin is his dream coach in the sense that he won't nail him down to playing the 4. But to get the waiver, the kid needs to show that the transfer wasn't about being disenchanted in Cincy.

You are right on target about handler. Talent and issues....sounds like he would fit right in but we need stability not more crap. Have to take him though considering our present state.

@NYPost_Brazille: Cincinnati transfer Jermaine Lawrence at Iona at the moment for second visit. Nothing set as of yet with St. John's and Manhattan.

Actually told the same thing that the school is already preparing the paperwork on the waiver.

@AdamZagoria: Lawrence could possibly visit St. John's either this weekend or next weekend, source tells @SNYtv

I would love to land him but my money is on Iona. This is what they do now. They can sell the idea of taking transfers, plugging them and being right on the doorstep of the tournament.

You put him with AJ English, David Laury and Isaiah Williams and with Manhattan losing their top 3 players, they would be primed to run through the MAAC.

And have their MAAC games televised on PBS.

I'm sure that's what JL dreamed of when he saw his Top 25 ranking in high school.

The MAAC has a deal with ESPN. And with Iona being one of the premiere teams in the league, they were on ESPN2 and ESPNU a bunch of times the last few years.

He'd rather make the NBA then the NCAAs. No other school provides the competition and exposure like St. Johns. He will be wearing red and white next year

I hope you're right. All I'm saying is that it wouldn't shock me if it's Iona.

That is correct.

What's ESPN coverage do for you when it's Canisius vs Niagra?

I just don't understand how some of our fans trump up other schools and situations other than our own.

It's not SJU and Duke vying for his services.

It's Iona, Manhattan and Hofstra for goodness sakes. It's not the ACC or the Big Ten. It's the MAAC.

Doesn't take away the fact that he can choose wherever he wants to go. But you made their situation sound better than ours.

Who is English, Laury and Williams when he could be surrounded by a 1st Team BE player, ROY runner up, the best JUCO rebounder in the nation and one of the best shot blockers in the nation.

I agree. St. John's is the better situation looking at it from a college basketball fan's point of view. You just don't know what a kid is looking for. Maybe being after being a small fish in a big pond at Cincinnati, the idea of being a big fish in a small pond might appeal to him. And a place like Iona is establishing a reputation for being a good landing spot for guys who are looking for that.

This talk of any other area school besides SH as competition is ridiculous. If Lavin really wants him, he'll get him.

Yeah but their kids go 1 and out in the tourny and get no sniff from the nba. I don't see how he doesn't chose sju in this scenario but obviously I'm biased.

I believe most of us are bias in this instance. 'Cause many of us see the dividends how landing Lawrence could possibly pay off for the Johnnies. We'll have a kid with loads of potential, as well as landing him could smooth things out in '15 when it comes to youth, if we were to land Briscoe, Diallo, Sampson, Mitchell, Efianayi and the likes. Basically, landing Lawrence could be huge on several levels.

I understand where postell is coming from with his case. But I'd be somewhat surprised, if he doesn't end up with the Johnnies.
