Jermaine Lawrence, PF (Cincinnati)

“@JonRothstein: Hard to trust anything you read on twitter in regards to college recruiting. Jermaine Lawrence has NOT cut his list. He prob will in August.”

Regardless, I'm not sweating it. There is still plenty of time in his recruitment, although that is probably his top 3 schools at the moment. Lavin is a terrific recruiter, so he'll have us in a position to bring in solid recruits.

Jermaine probably played D-3 defense anyway! ;)

Lavs only has to focus on a handful of kids in the 13 of class. That doesn't bode well for opposing coaches. He will get on of the top kids he wants. Also, bodes well for the 14 class since Lavs and co can really focus on those kids.

I agree with your entire post. I believe he'll have a couple of scholarships to use, which will make it easier for him and staff to identify targets and zero in on them. Imagine the damage Lavin and the staff can do, throughout the summer, only needing a couple of spots to fill.

I never liked Jermaine Lawrence's move to NJ in terms of how it impacted SJU. We were in the driver's seat before he left Cardozo and blindsided Naclerio. Not saying we won't land him, but I like our chances less than I did. Thankfully, it's no big deal if staff doesn't land Jermaine. They will land one or two fantastic prospects regardless. I have zero doubt in my mind that this wil turn our very favorably, regardless of whether Jermaine Lawrence heads to SJU. By no means do I think we're out with him. We just don't need any one kid at this point and have a stable of excellent forwards already here.

Bingo, Lawrence or no Lawrence we will be just fine.
We loose one player this season ( Gift ) and I have no doubt our staff will be able to fill that slot with a top level player. Perhaps Lawrence is worried about the competition up front as each of Sir Dom and Amir will only get better as well as Jakaar and Sanchez. There will not be a lot of pt available at the 3 and 4 slots the next few seasons for a newcomer.

I think Lavin recently proved that you should view these reports with a grain of salt and to never underestimate him. People also said STJ was out for Jakarr. We're fine

Does anyone really think he'd commit to Rutgers. No disrespect to their program but I don't see that happening.

Simply by listing RU as his current top 3 faves tells me other coaches really haven't turned up the heat on him yet.

I'm sure JL will tear up the summer circuit and that top 3 will be quite different by September..

Kid is a great player, a probable NBA 1st rounder after one year

That said, his handler makes Nuri's mom look like a card carrying Red White club member

IMO Savino gets him when the big boys back off.

Fwiw, if past history means anything, Lavin won't back off. Cronin/Savino backed off Obekpa even though they were in the driver's seat because they likely wanted obekpa before spring signing. Lavin, Chiles and co. Have zero problem with handlers unlike us fans. They have proven that handlers can also become an asset. Nate Blue is now a big friend of the program. We aren't backing off.

Per Rivals....

Lawrence out with injury

Class of 2013 four-star combo forward Jermaine Lawrence had really been looking forward to NBPA Camp. Unfortunately, he hurt himself prior to camp and has been sitting out while his right wrist is immobilized in a brace.

"I was like doing a windmill and I hit my wrist on the rim wrong," said Lawrence. "So, I'm not able to play but it's been cool here."

The 6-foot-8 Lawrence did come prepared when asked to list his schools. Rather than forget anybody, he consulted a list on his phone to report offers from Xavier, Baylor, Kansas, Virginia Tech, Villanova, Connecticut, Syracuse, St. John's, Rutgers, Louisville, Hofstra, Florida and Cincinnati.

According to Lawrence, each school is recruiting him as a small forward and he's looking to visit UNLV and Rutgers sometime this month. As for making a decision, he's in no rush and says that he may wait until next spring to decide.

"There's so many good schools recruiting me it's tough to decide," said Lawrence. "I just want to take my time with it and make the right choice."

Per Rivals....

He sat out the first two days of camp with a right wrist injury, but Jermaine Lawrence couldn't take it any longer. The 6-foot-8 combo forward from New York just had to get out there and play. That he did at a very high level using his elite speed and quickness to make plays all over the floor and in transition. Looking ahead he's being recruited as a three (where he should end up long term) but has the ability and size to play a bit at the four and will likely do so a lot in college.

ESPN Insider article today refers to Jermaine cutting his list to 3 (which we know probably isn't true), but they claim he told Borzello St Johns, Rutgers, Florida. Interesting...
It's not a long article, but here's the important quote:

"Jermaine Lawrence (Springfield Gardens, N.Y./Pope John XXIII) has seen his stock rise of late. He's the No. 25 recruit in the class of 2013, is drawing plenty of interest and recently told Matt Whitfield and Jeff Borzello that three of the schools pursuing him have pulled ahead from the rest of the pack.

Those three schools are (in no particular order) Florida, Rutgers and St. John's. All three would be happy to add the talented big man to their roster but, of that trio, the Gators probably need him the least "

Thanks for the post. This is also interesting, if true. Regardless, I won't (as, many others) be satisfied until someone of Lawrence's caliber signs on the dotted line. A good start (again, if true), nonetheless.

Agreed, although we are certainly trending toward that type of recruit for 2013. I fully expect us to get a top 25 player by this time next year. If Lavin can pull in the type of class he did this year with all the swirling and doubts and having only coached four games, I have no doubt in his ability to step it up another notch. The loss of Coach Dunlap hurts for now, but Lavs will find a solid replacement and pick right up where he left off, IMO. We should have a real good year on the court this year and show our true defense and running offense so these kids know what the Johnnies are all about. No inside info here, but I have full confidence in our Coach.

Please do not shoot the messenger.
I just arrived home having spent the last 2 days in Boston at the Hoopville Tournament at the Reggie Lewis Center. The NY Rens had a few teams in the tournament and when I inquired if Jermaine was playing later in the day I was told he would not be as a result of injuring his wrist. The coach was surprised at my interest given my Canadian background and I told him I am an SJU alumnus, a big fan of the program and we have a great interest in him.
I was immediately told the kid is a lottery pick and will be going to Kansas or Kentucky and there is no chance of him ending up at SJU.
Take it for what it is worth and again don't shoot the messenger.
