This is a situation where things are not going our way and it's not anybody's fault. Our coach is recovering from a serious medical issue, we didn't initially anticipate having to be involved in the 2012 recruiting game heavily, and we've had a series of unfortunate occurrences this season. The main reason are surprised and/or disappointed we haven't had more success with this class is because Lavin is Lavin, and the expectations he's set. Take that out and look just at the surrounding circumstances, it's not that surprising that we aren't having a bigger class (as of yet, we don't know what will happen in the next 2 months).
At the same time, it's not difficult to understand why recruits haven't been jumping on board as they were last year. We as fans may see the positives and potential, but it doesn't mean they have to. For guys who have a lot of high level options this has been a difficult year for us from a publicity standpoint. You could certainly understand why they might see the opportunity for playing time with an incredibly talented core group in a major market, etc., and you could certainly understand why they might see us as a risk right now. They only get to make this decision one time.
The key thing for us to remember is that we don't need that much. If we had 2-3 mediocre bench guys this year in addition to what we have, it wouldn't seem like we'd need to add as much. 1-2 contributors to the 6 we have and Branch and away we go. Since we don't have those players, it seems like we need more. We shouldn't let the lack of 2-3 bench guys make us think we need more than we do. If all 7 are back next year, there won't be that much room in our rotation for more than 2 guys really, depending on their level of impact.
That's why we can talk about bringing in new guys all we want (and I don't want to diminish our need for 1-2 bigs, I'm not trying to understand that) the single biggest thing we need to worry about is all 6 + Branch being here next year. If that happens, things will fall into place.
