JaKarr Sampson

Kansas has 4 high-rated forwards (Perry Ellis, Andrew White, Zach Peters, and Landen Lucas) coming in next year, plus Ben McLemore and Jamari Traylor who didnt qualify this year. That seems like a horrible SF/PF playtime situation even without Jakarr.

Exactly right. At SJU he'd work in nicely at both forward spots. Kansas is loaded at forward.

Wow. I had been concerned about KU, but i hadn't thought about their roster situation. There is a TON of competition for Jakarr at KU.

But think of it this way, other schools are probably telling him: "SJU is returning a pre-season All American at your position, they have 2 returning forwards, and are recruiting two more."

I'm sure Lav is explaining that he wants to play him and Moe together. But, there's an argument that we have a number of combo forwards on the roster and are still trying to sign Shepard and Gathers too.

Jakarr knows what we are all about. opposing coaches can't say anything. He would be our starting 4 next year if he signed a LOI. If he and Gathers signed, I could totally see a front line against most opposition as Sampson, Gathers, and Moe with GG off the bench.

Exactly right... Would be unstoppable right there.

Even if you don't get Obekpa and then turn to Sanchez off bench with GG, we would have more than enough size

Yeah, but I'd looove Obekpa. Such a defensive presence.

Sanchez seems to play like a 3 rather than a 4.

JaKarr signed my St.John's shirt is that good enough for a letter of intent? He did sign last spring during IS8.

FWIW this is from a Providence broadcaster but.....

It’s down to the Friars, and Kansas Jayhawks, for 6-8 forward Jakarr Sampson. Think about that for a second…Alumni Hall/the Dunk vs. Phog Allen Fieldhouse…whoa…

where exactly u get this from?

How many schollies do they have available? They don't have any seniors, there's 13 on the roster (I don't know how many are walk-ons) and they have three commits.

I have spent substantial time in Providence and I can honestly say I don't know anything about the credibility of any website "GoLocaProv.com" I never heard of it before.

I would be more concerned about a Providence College commit for Mr. Sampson if the source came from long time beat writer Kevin McNamara of the Providence Journal.

Time will tell but as I say "In Lavin Trust".

Jakaar...clearly your signifigance to this program has grown tremendously with Gathers joining Baylor. I am tired of the fifty kazillion posts on the thread about spilled milk, so I am reviving your thread to make sure you know we would love to see you helping to electrify MSG next year. Make the next move and committ to SJU and be a part of our future, as this team takes the next steps towards reestablishing itself as a force in college hoops.

Note: Yes I am repeating this in several threads because the fact is you guys have a chance to be the bigs that make this team complete and all of you are keys to our future.

FWIW. I hear we are in good shape with Mr. Sampson.

I hope you are right. We had many posters who thought we had Ricardo all but recommitted too. All three of these guys are vital to the future. We have the 1-2-3 filled with high quality talent. We have GG but we need depth at the 4-5 taken care of. I have maintained, and still do, that Sampson was a bigger loss this year than Pelle. He still has a lot of polishing to do but I his offensive game includes a midrange game which seems more refined than Pelle who seemed like a pure slasher/finisher. Both were noted for defense and getting to the rim to finish so IMHO I had to give Sampson the edge based on the fact that he has a developing midrange game.

NOTE: I get all my info from recruiting sites so I could be totally wrong...I am ok with this though as it is my only link, besides this site, to understanding what the recruits could be bringing to our team. ;)

We'll see. I'll believe it when he commits to SJU. He can at any time. I think Gathers to Baylor can only help us with Sampson because Gathers was direct competition for PT here at SJU. While Sampson isn't as strong as Gathers right now, he's a bit taller, a better athlete and more crafty with the ball on offense. He's also an excellent rebounder. If we do land Jakarr, he will offset the loss of Gathers. Our forwards become really long and athletic with Jakarr in there. We'll see though. Would like to see him here. He's got great upside and fits our style real well.

Great news if true. Does anyone else feel that in this system we might almost be better served with two quasi 3/4's capable of playing either position effectively (read: Harkless and Sampson) than with a traditional power forward alongside a center?

A lot of talk about us needing more size on the inside, and that's true, especially from a depth perspective. But I don't know that that can't be accomplished and better serve our overall scheme by putting another Harkless-type alongside Harkless. You get the best of both worlds: long, capable rebounders but still capable of playing uptempo, in transition, and on the perimeter offensively. With another year of development you have the added benefit of increased strength which should improve their ability to defend the interior.

I know Gathers would have been a complete exception to this because he is in a traditional power forward's body and get still get up and down the way we like to play. And it doesn't work (as we are seeing this year), if Harkless is forced to play a more true power forward alongside a more true small forward. But I see a Harkless/Sampson frontcourt anchored by an Obekpa/Gift as big enough to defend and rebound in this league while still being able to play at our pace offensively.

WHILE IT WOULD BE GREAT TO GET THOSE MENTIONED,MAYBE A 7 FOOTER EVEN IF HE IS A SLUG(TO USE WAYNE MCKOYS VERNACULAR),WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL AGST A MELO....WHEN LUTHER WRIGHT PLAYED FOR THE HALL AGST CAROLINA,THEY COULD COMPETE....W/O HIM,THEY WERE LOSERS..

Coach def sees that Sampson fits into his system. Obekpa is still the key for me. I have already had my first man crush on Gathers broken. Please Chris/Jakar, don't do it to me again.  :nerd:
