Jakarr Sampon get deal with 76ers!

I am happy to be temporarily wrong on this! With Embid, Richardson, and Grant all on the inactive list with injuries, it looks like it will be short-lived, though.

No offense man, but as someone who called Sampson's departure addition by subtraction for the Johnnie's team this year, I don't think it's appropriate for throwing cold water on this accomplishment. Any of us who ever bounced a ball on NYC's asphalt would dream of a moment wearing an NBA team uniform in regular season, even for a moment. Whether he's on this roster for a day, a week, or the next 15 years is something is something far greater than most of us imagined. He has grabbed a brass ring, has shown he can compete with NBA talent, and you (and most of us) sold him far short of that.

Man, I would just love for this guy to have a long NBA career, first of all for him, and second to demonstrate to us how little we know about basketball as fans who act like experts on these forums

I still think this this is addition by subtraction and it will be proven when we have a better season this year. Donte Greene averaged 17.7 and 7.2 for Syracuse as a frosh and was selected in the fist round. They were a better team when he left--going from NIT to Sweet 16. Greene and Sampson were similar players in college...very talented, weak defense, poor shot selection, and chemistry issues with teammates.

I would love for him to have a long NBA career as well.
There are so many factors that go into the differences from one season to the next that to say one factor such as JaKarr not being on the team would be the reason we are better is ludicrous As for us fans who act like experts knowing little about basketball may I just point out that the real experts were just as wrong as Jakarr not only wasn't drafted but was not on the top 100 of nba draft lists..

Not even remotely similar situations. Cuse had Devendorf and Rautins coming off medical redshirts and signed a top 50 recruit Kris Joseph to replace Greene. That's why Cuse was a better team without Greene. Not because he wasn't good, but because they added a lot of firepower the next season!

I did not see this coming but I am always happy when any Redmen makes an NBA team or has a chance to make a decent living playing the game he loves elsewhere. Hopefully Jakarr can prove that he is a diamond in the rough and continue to hone his skills.

FWIW, I don't think for a second that you aren't happy for him and wish him nothing but the best.

Syracuse missed the NCAAs for the second time in like twenty years with Greene and a very talented team (Johnny Flynn, Arinze Onuaku, Paul Harris, Rick Jackson, Scoop Jardine, and Devendorf for 1/3 of the season). He was a very talented kid, but they were better off when he left. Sure, there are other factors, but jump-shooting PFs with their eyes playing SF in the NBA can really hurt teams if they don't take care of the PF duties as well. Sampson could have been fine at a school like Kansas, but we didn't have anyone to pickup his slack at St. John's. We needed a defensive-minded rebounder and we didn't have one....simple as that.

He's an easy guy to root for. I will always appreciate him coming back to St. John's after what happened in 2011. It showed a lot of loyalty.

I'm happy for Karr. He's a really good kid. And even though he had two years at SJU where the team didn't accomplish much its good to have more SJU players in the NBA.

But I'd really hate for 3 weeks from now us updating this thread that he was cut and sent to the D-League. Making opening night roster is one thing. Sticking is another. Actually playing is yet another.

I'll say one thing with absolute certainty: By making the opening day roster he increased his chances of being on the roster two months from now considerably. :)

last year, there were a few times, few and far between really, where JaKarr looked capable of being a defensive beast. With his long arms and athletic ability...his stats with the Sissers in summer league/preseason at least show he's involved. Varied statline even if nothing stands out much. But I think he ups his defensive intensity, he can definitely secure a spot in the Association for years to come.

76ers are purposely trying to be bad. It's like the movie "Major League," or a Marlins roster after a fire-sale year. Many were surprised the teams didn't vote for nba lottery reform just because of what Philly is doing with this roster. Still, like when Philly has a meaningful team and it would be awesome if Jakarr were part of that in the coming seasons.

Hope JaKarr makes the most of this opportunity, and YES, always good when a Johnnie has a shot like this, I root for him as I always have--for those who get their panties in a bunch way too easily on the 'net. :)

peace.

Where is it confirmed that the Sixers are trying to tank? Urban myth or is there some proof of this? I'm watching the Lakers and their roster is pretty bad too. Are they tanking?

Are you expecting there to be proof?
A team admitting to losing?

Everyone is speculating. Oops that wicked word again :eek:hmy:

*and regarding the Lakers they are proablaby tanking too. If the finish outside the bottom 5 their pick goes to PHX

Once they're rid of Kobe's contract they can start rebuilding in earnest. They're both tanking.

That is great. Nobody can take those 8 minutes away from him. Too bad he didn't score.

He should have stayed at SVSM. The tape on him as a junior was awesome, but Brewster made him a straight-up big man and that halted his development. He would have been able to stay the man at SVSM and play SF while being looked at to score. Those Brewster teams were so loaded he was just another player.

Jakarr Sampson will be in the starting lineup for the 76ers tonight. Wishing him the best as he pursues his dream.

The NBA has been pretty familiar for Sampson so far. Last game he played against his former teammate, Moe Harkless, and tonight he's playing against Doug McDermott. Same positions too.

McDermott is averaging 5.2 ppg to start the season and has five tonight thus far. Chicago has some pretty decent forwards, so he might not get that much burn as a rookie.

Dunleavy is having his way with Sampson....24 pts 8-11 shooting 5-8 from three.
No Derek Rose tonight. Man, he's made of glass. Chicago starting to run away 88-74 with 1:44 left in the third quarter.

Sixers will fall to 0-6 with the next four games on the road. Yikes.
