Isaiah Whitehead, SG (Seton Hall verbal)

It was a meeting in the family apartment of high school hoops star Isaiah Whitehead in the initial days of the summer recruiting period, where Kevin Willard decided to push everything to the center of the table. Whitehead, a 6-foot-4 shooting guard from famed Lincoln High School in Brooklyn, was one of the top unsigned players in the 2014 class and Seton Hall needed a star at the top of its list.

Seton Hall pitched its family atmosphere, its improving facilities and the Big East Conference's new national television deal. It was making an impact, but it didn't feel like enough. Willard then pulled an ace.

He offered one of the vacancies on his staff to Whitehead's high school coach, Dwayne "Tiny" Morton to show just how serious he was. According to two people familiar with the contents of that meeting who asked remain anonymous because they don't speak on the interests of Whitehead, Morton or Seton Hall — that was a major selling point. Whitehead's mother, Ericka Rambert had heard all she needed to.

So I'm not allowed to question our offense because the season didn't start yet. Apparently the season not starting yet somehow alleviates that. If you aren't worried about our offense you weren't watching last year. We couldn't shoot FT's we could not buy a 3 with Bill Gates money, and we depended on running the shot clock down to 5 seconds, chucking and praying. We were among the worst offenses in major college hoops.

Go look at the roster this season. See any new names that reportedly will give the offense a big boost?

The problem people have with you is your over-the-top reaction to everything. If anyone is insulting you, it's because they deem your behavior ridiculous to the point of being insult worthy. And it's not because they are old. Or because they have a beer gut. Or because there is some secret good old boys network here whose existence you alone are privy to. It is because you go nuts over everything. Are you like this in real life, or just online?

You are more than welcome to question the offense. It's just that a rational person would indeed wait until November to worry.

Let's put things in perspective for a second...this is a basketball forum. Do you think Fun acts like he acts on here in real life? Obviously not. Do I? Obviously not. I'm just a big SJU fan that is dying of hunger to see this team do something big. That's all. I wasn't aware a sports forum could double as a mental health clinic with you guys being the shrinks. I come here for basketball, not personal attacks like some of you do. All I was saying was if our offense is horrid again, it will make the IW story haunt us even more.

I wish I was a fly on the wall to hear what Lavin was saying especially when he found out that the only reason he chose them over us was because of the coaching position. What a joke. Still have no clue how that isn't illegal. Lavin must have been shocked when he asked him that.

If that's all true, then why all the histrionics yesterday? Doesn't seem necessary... I'm still scratching my head about yesterday.

Tried to see if SJU would up the ante for Tiny.

That's my guess. Or just match what Seton Hall was offering because if they were offering that from the beginning then why not just take the offer immediately instead of dragging us back in it this late in the game

Yeah, that makes sense -

Having read all the orhestrations that have transpired, between IW/Mom/Morton and SH, I wonder how we were lured back in or whether we re-engaged...and whether we intentionally or unitentionally were used...

Some aspects don't make sense..why ask SJ to jump back in if you weren't serious? Did he just realize that he wasn't going to be "the face" of the program? If the idea of a job for Morton was floated in early summer, why waste time with us?

Only thing I can think of is Morton's job preference was SJ and he used the kid to see if he could get SJ to offer a job. He probably reached out to SHU because he knew they were desperate and would be open to offering him an opportunity.

I know he has had success at Lincoln but not sure what he will add to SHU beyond IW (and that might only be for a year).

I agree with all of this. It was frustrating to get pulled back in this week only to end up in the same spot we've been in with IW all along. He always wanted to go somewhere else. I also didn't understand all his mom's comments about us the last few days, when articles are saying she was sold on the Hall months ago. Whatever.

I wanted him here because of his high ranking and him being from NY, but we don't really need another guard right now. If Coach can get some good size in this class, then that would be fine with me.

I personally don't think it was decided in the summer.

And there's no question Lavin was intentionally used.

It must have been embarrassing for Tiny when Lavin essentially said no. It kind of makes SHU look like the "anything goes" program and ours like the one with standards.

By the way, no doubt in my mind Tiny uses his new paycheck to give Whitehead a cut for his part if not a continuous salary. But the NCAA will never see a red flag because it's apparently legal to hire their coaches.

IW took an unofficial yesterday. The school didn't invite him or officially host him. Also, everyone was questioning why Lavin was in a pic in Manhattan yesterday. Did Lavin even meet with IW and his mom? Again, the school can't comment so we don't really know how deep we were in this.

Probably right. Willard, in desperation mode, probably threw the idea out there and then had to figure out how to deliver...Morton probably figured he needed to be prodded...

What is funny, albeit natural, is all the revisionist history-like comments that followed the announcement -- SJ went from being a "privilege" to "not being as consistent as SHU (which wasn't involved until 2 months ago...Comical

Words from Tiny's own mouth (which is why I commend the way Zags handled it giving him just enough rope to hang himself with) was that Tiny asked Lavin for a job at SJU today. He said it himself.

Put the pieces together. If Quadri Moore knew IW was in the bag, do you think he'd really turn down SH just a day before this.

Trust me SJU was it this morning. SHU simply went "all in" for him today.

They feel they need to make a splash. But this stuff has a way of backfiring...

We agree here, Joe.

I thought that was the case when this went down (about Whitehead possibly getting a kickback of his coaches salary), but didn't mention at the time.
