Isaiah Whitehead, SG (Seton Hall verbal)

Haven't posted about bball in a while but I will add my two cents in just to get it out and so everyone knows where i stand for the future, lol. In the end, say what you want, this is an 18 year old kid making a decision. There are way more important things in the world, and I hope in all of our lives. This will not change any of our lives directly I do not think. Am I upset? Of course, but I would rather be on our side then the other side of this. I would feel embarrassed if we only got a kid because we gave his coach a job. Lavin has secured plenty of Top 100 recruits, notwithstanding JUCOs like Sanchez, Gift and Marco and transfers like Hooper. Lavin does not need to stoop to that level and I applaud him for valuing our players and coaching staff and being true to them, over getting a quick hit NYC recruit. While some might disagree with me, and I would love to get top NYC kids, I couldn't care less if we have all kids from the west coast, if they represent SJU well and win. I am an SJU fan, I root for the Redmen and whoever wears our jersey and represents our program with class and plays hard. I don't root for where they are from. With that all said, the only thing I am disappointed in his we got played a little, but lets all be realistic, they dont get much more savy and shrewed than Lavin. This will definitely not happen again under his watch, and it had to be really shady for him to get played a little. In the end, I am so excited for this season and the guys we have, that want to play for us and don't care about themselves or their handlers. Look at Jordan, everyone counted us out, Philly kid, Temple and UCLA knocking on the door, and he chose us and seems to be really happy about that. Those are the kids we should strive for.

“I just chose Seton Hall because it was the perfect fit for me," Morton said at a news conference at the Lincoln High School gym on Thursday. "Coach [Willard] has played a key hand in my development, even in high school, telling me basic things I needed to do. I just felt comfortable.”

"I can also stay close to home, where it's easily accessible for my parents, for my family," said Morton, who is widely known by his childhood nickname "Tiny." "It's not too far away. And it's just Coach Willard -- he's played a big part in me getting this opportunity at Seton Hall."

Morton's mom said she was sometimes unsure which school her son would pick.

"I don't think I've always known, because we've raised Tiny to make choices," she said. "Believe me, he just whispered to us in that room before we walked out. We raised him to make decisions like that, because he's going to school there. Not us."

In a related move, Lincoln shooting guard Isaiah Whitehead also committed to Seton Hall on Thursday.

Bravo. Just bravo.

Lavin definitely has the moral high ground here. There is no doubt he is all class, a great recruiter, and a stand up guy. I just hope he can lead us to wins. The problem is that moral high ground does not win games. Being a good coach wins games. The more this back and forth between coaches and media goes on, the more I'm glad we stayed away, BUT some of you I feel are too accepting of mediocrity. If we have a bad season this year (i.e. missing the tourney and no major injuries), then who will you blame? If not Lavin then who?

Speaking only for myself and some of the better advice I received was that I wait until I actually get to a bridge before I cross it

Can I ask a serious question? Try hard to avoid insults as tempting as it may be...but at what point do some of you begin to question our offense? At what point do some of you begin to question Lavin? I seriously would not be shocked in the least if this was a happy board with tons of Lavin supporters even if we win 15 games this season. I'm just curious to know what it would take not to even be disappointed in, but to question the team, or coach's ability to win games.

Joe, do you remember this site being a 'happy place' DURING the last two seasons? No, quite the opposite.

So we didn't bend over for tiny, big whoop. Wait till the season actually starts before you start complaining about our offense. If its not good then, you will be perfectly validated in your statements. But for goodness sake please wait until then!

By the way Joe what was the biggest complaint about last year. The Xs and Os. We missed Dunlap and we struggled in the strategic sense. Did you forget Lavin's biggest addition this year? Jim Whitesell who may be as good as dunlap and better with the kids. Do you think maybe we should see how they play this year now that Lavin proactively filled a deficiency from last year and not just blindly bitch because we lose a player to a sleazy move.

+1000. I agree with every word of your post.

AMEN brothers!
My 2 cents: The new Big East needs headlines and stars.....welcome to the Big East Isaiah!
Willard needs to win some games and if his team implodes this year.....well, Tiny always has a job at Lincoln.
We need big men for 2014-15. IW would not fill that need. He also aspires to be a 1and done. With big numbers he will do that at the Hall....if he enrolls.
The Seton Hall games will be fun both this year and with IW, next year. Great PR for the league and the NYC metro area for both schools.
Rutgers WHO?

And this is why I was so taken back by Zach B's article in the Post yesterday. He was laying it on extra thick trying to portray IW as the anti-Sebastien Telfair. More like Harkless and less like Lance. All in the hopes that IW would be coming to SJU.

From the article:
From his quiet demeanor to his humble personality and lack of hangers-on, Isaiah Whitehead doesn’t fit the stereotype of a New York City high school basketball star.

Now today, these are words from IW himself:

@NYPost_Brazille: Whitehead on St. John's: “I don’t think it was tough because they really didn’t see me as the [the] face of St. John’s before.

@NYPost_Brazille: More Whitehead: "I don’t understand why they would now.”

And, he puts another article out there before IW even gets to announce about Tiny Morton landing a gig at Seton Hall.

I've ripped Zags before so I have no problem sharing the wealth. And I commend Zags for how he handled himself today. He asked Tiny all the "relevant" questions straight from the horses mouth while still toeing the line even though we know Zags wanted IW at SJU.

Zach butchered this announcement. And that's some of the build them up/tear them down antics that I don't like.

He knew what went on behind the scenes. Let the kid and coach have their moment. No one sees this ending up well for the Seton Hall regime in the long run, so just let things play out as they may.

How did he butcher the announcement?? If anything, Zach had it more RIGHT than most recruiting analysts. When everyone was saying it would be St John's yesterday, Zach was tweeting not to count SHU out of it at all. Evan Daniels, Rothstein, Zags and multiple other big time recruiting writers cited sources yesterday saying it would definitely be St John's. Zach was the one that WASN'T premature on it.

Do we need Whitehead? Absolutely not .We will have DLO,Branch,Greene as sr.s and probably Sheed. Things however, have not been looking too good for 14 recruiting wise. IW would have been a great get and could have helped draw other recruits in 14 and 15. I really thought we had him yesterday. Im still confident when all is said and done we will have a good recruiting class. Before yesterday I didn't think we would get him because he said he wanted a lot a PT, he will get that at SHU.

Can everyone else finally admit the Hall is a red hot school right now? If they really do add Briscoe also then they have around the same talent level as us IMO. Not being negative, being real. Another NYC McD AA gone...Jordan and co. better step up big time. We can never have too much scoring...if you are not upset that we got played here and lost a 5 star NYC McD AA recruit, I would question your pulse as a fan.

Let's hope Jordan makes us forget about him fast. I'm still confident in Lavin, but my bar is set at the 2015 class. If we don't bring in major players then , it's time to ask what's going on.
I would say WHITE hot...in fact, rumor is Lavin will leave town rather than compete with them...Relax...they got 2 players by hiring their coaches...they have run out of coaching jobs to offer...

Tiny Morton said "2 assistant coaches at Syracuse wanted him to go there badly but it didn't work out."

So I'm not allowed to question our offense because the season didn't start yet. Apparently the season not starting yet somehow alleviates that. If you aren't worried about our offense you weren't watching last year. We couldn't shoot FT's we could not buy a 3 with Bill Gates money, and we depended on running the shot clock down to 5 seconds, chucking and praying. We were among the worst offenses in major college hoops.

You guys talk about the future all the time with no qualms, but when your favorite poster asks, it all of a sudden becomes "Oh my god! There he goes again! What a douchebag!". How about just giving a normal response for a change? For Christ's sake, if you can't reply without insulting then don't reply at all. My point is very much relevant. Our offense is essentially what is getting us #6 and #7 rankings in some previews. We are like the Jets...plenty of defense but zero offense.

Did you even read my post?

Just want to make sure before I respond.

Thanks

3 players.

Jaren Sina for '13.

Actually 4 players if you count Tiny's son.

Go look at the roster this season. See any new names that reportedly will give the offense a big boost?

The problem people have with you is your over-the-top reaction to everything. If anyone is insulting you, it's because they deem your behavior ridiculous to the point of being insult worthy. And it's not because they are old. Or because they have a beer gut. Or because there is some secret good old boys network here whose existence you alone are privy to. It is because you go nuts over everything. Are you like this in real life, or just online?

You are more than welcome to question the offense. It's just that a rational person would indeed wait until November to worry.

Maybe I can put it in simplier terms for Joe as I think he is a Mets fan (as am I). You know how the Mets get the Carlos Beltran and Pedro Martinez's of the world to sign with them?? They overpay. Whatever it takes. It kills their future but the regime isn't worried about that. SH are the Mets. They need to pull off everything they can to get someone to come. It will damage their future but live for now.
