Homeland And All Things Maher

Posted here to acknowledge the incredible job by the firefighters in California.
The story of the Mann Gulch fire in the Montana mountains in 1949 in which 13 firefighters or smoke jumpers who were part of a 15 man crew that parachuted in to fight the fire. The crew chief, Dodge, tells the story years on his deathbed, he was one of the 2 to survive. He is credited by some for “discovering” out of desperation what became the lighting of firebreaks to contain the spread of forest fires but I really have no idea if that is true. Based on a book by the same name, song written by Canadian folkie James Keelaghan and performed here by the folk “supergroup” Cry, Cry, Cry; Dar Williams, Lucy Kaplansky and Richard Shindell.

Trying to knock out most of the likely Best Picture contenders for the upcoming academy awards, I watched Conclave last night

Interesting watch. I enjoyed it but I don't think I loved it. It has a lot of intrigue and building tension throughout, but I don't think the final stretch of the film delivered enough for me to consider it a great movie.

I did really like the core conflict of the movie. Without getting into spoilers, it deals a lot with conflicting opinions regarding how to guide the catholic church forward, and the differing perspectives are laid out very well. You aren't meant to agree with everyone, but you get a good sense of why everyone holds the beliefs they do. A solid film. Available on Peacock which I am sure some of you have given our johnnies play on there.

As a best picture contender though, I don't really see it happening for Conclave. But who knows. I still think Dune: Part Two is the best film of the year but doesn't sound like it is getting touted as a real contender at the Academy Awards

Watch Anora! Itis a great watch and Mikey Madison is great as the title character

As long as you brought it up 😂 my favorite version, beautiful harmonies!!
Collaboration of two bands, Lake Street Dive are the three musicians in the back and the lady who starts singing lead.
Tiny Habits are the 3 other singers, all 7 are grads of the Berklee School of Music in Boston.

Logen,

Thanks for posting. Lake Street Dive is a band I often hear on the local college radio station here in NC, but I had never heard this, an absolutely gorgeous rendition of a great song. Sent it to my older brother and sister who are in their 80s and long time PPM fans and my daughter who is a big Lake Street Dive fan. Love sharing great music.

They say the Golden Age of Television began in 1999 when Tony Soprano walked into Jennifer Melfi's office.

But we all know it began in 1990 when Dale Cooper entered the town of Twin Peaks.

RIP David Lynch.

There was no one like you.

Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive are two of my favorite movies ever made. Says a lot about me, I guess. Lynch was a creative genius, he’ll certainly be missed.

What a movie! That was a thrilling ride. I’ll be pulling for Mikey Madison in best actress

Have to check this out.

The director - Sean Baker - made one of my favorite movies in recent years "The Florida Project."

It's one of the best films ever made about both childhood and poverty.

I will say it’s a much different ride from Sean Baker’s other films. This one takes on more of a Safdie Brother approach, which I don’t know if you’ve seen their film “Uncut Gems” but the style they go for is this very breakneck pace… anxiety inducing dialogue and action that keeps you on your toes throughout.

Anora is very similar in that way and it is what makes the Mikey Madison performance so impressive. She just keeps throwing 101 mph fastballs the whole runtime. Some of the side characters were great too

I watched A Real Pain yesterday, it’s available on Hulu and while I enjoyed the movie, I don’t think it’s anything particularly awards worthy. And, this is probably an unpopular opinion but I don’t get why Kieran Culkin is always up for awards. He just seems like he acts like a slightly swarmier version of himself and that includes Succession. Eisenberg is basically doing his usual schtick too (even though I love Adventureland and The Social Network). Maybe I’m still bitter Bob Odenkirk didn’t win one Emmy for playing Saul/Jimmy/Gene 😉.

Brrooklyn Love Story may be worst Indy movie out there, about gentrification in Bay Ridge, Brroklyn on Prime Video. Cast has a few Soprano guys, but there was also a 250 pound “Slice” R moping around among them. Monte probably knows folks connected to this bomb,

Especially the nice enforcer who has been getting some nominations for Best Supporting Actor

Austor’s post on Yarrow’s death and his use of the iconic Johnny Cash photo triggered this sharing; for those who love good music, real roots music and not familiar with the Carolina Chocolate Drops, do yourself a favor and check them out. Formed in 2005 and played together until 2014.
The woman singing and playing fiddle, Rhiannon Giddens, is IMO, the most talented musician on this planet, classically trained singer, plays fiddle and banjo flawlessly, legitimate music historian especially regarding black influence on American roots music, and has branched out to tackle virtually every existing genre of music. She played banjo on Beyoncé’s recently released country record.
The player on banjo, Hubby Jenkins, was born and raised in Brooklyn, a graduate of Brooklyn Tech HS and plays multiple instruments, including the bones, and sings, hre is one while also being very learned on the history of black contributions to roots music.
One of my favorite all time bands.

Logen, you and I share a love for Rhiannon; for me it's more in her solo career than with the Chocolate Drops. This performance here is probably of my favorite song of hers; coincidentally she is a doppelganger for my middle daughter never more so than in this video. Hope I copied this link correctly.

Love just about everything I have seen her do. If your daughter has seen this, I’m sure she’ll enjoy it again, if she hasn’t a beautiful rendition of American Tune, Giddens with Paul Simon.

I saw Black Doves. Nothing special.
I watched Black Doves, and it got better as it moved along, but nothing like Slow Horses-Good. Keira Knightly was good in it.

Same for Treason, but even less so, it was fine, just not Slow Horses-Great.

My wife has gotten into the Slow Horses books by Mick Herron, and loves them. She read all 8 in the series, and the first 4 followed the show nicely but of course with richer detail and more character development. So with season 5 coming in 2025, maybe we can expect three more seasons after that. Gary Oldham as Jackson Lamb is beyond brilliant.

She also is reading Mick Herron's other series set in Oxford, but finds it does not hold up to the Slow Horses series.

I NEVER understood the Little Vincent cold cheese thing. Yuck. But my nephews swear by it...
I hear you about the cold cheese thing at Little Vincent. When it was still open Famous Rays in the Village when you asked for a sausage or pepperoni slice,
they would add it on top with the sausage/pepperoni and place it in the oven. I loved it but just to give you a cup of it to sprinkle on top of an already hot/warm slice like they do at Little Vincent?

No, they warm the slice then pile on cold pizza cheese that completely covers the slice. It’s a huntington thing I think. Not for me.

I’ve been there on several occasions and see more take it in a cup to go with their slices. Been with a group where we got a few pies and a couple of people piped up “where’s the cold cheese?”
