Homeland And All Things Maher

Another Dylan trivia; famously, he played with a band, including Mike Bloomfield, electrified and amped up at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival; they played 3 songs. After leaving the stage, Dylan was convinced to come out and do one acoustic tune, for which he chose “It’s All Over Now Baby Blue”, which was interpreted by many to be a message to the adoring “folkies” of his abandonment of that genre to play electric music, although in his subsequent tour of England he played both an electric and acoustic set. Anyway, whose guitar did he borrow to play that song?

Johnny Cash?

One of the Clancy Bros., a teenage Arlo Guthrie, or Toshi Seegar.

Anything else is a disappointment.

No, no and no, although Cash is generally given credit for actually convincing Dylan to go back out after others had unsuccessfully “begged” him to. One of those beggars was Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary, who unfortunately for him, was caught on tape kind of groveling to “Bobby”. Eventually, it was his guitar Dylan used.

Austor’s post on Yarrow’s death and his use of the iconic Johnny Cash photo triggered this sharing; for those who love good music, real roots music and not familiar with the Carolina Chocolate Drops, do yourself a favor and check them out. Formed in 2005 and played together until 2014.
The woman singing and playing fiddle, Rhiannon Giddens, is IMO, the most talented musician on this planet, classically trained singer, plays fiddle and banjo flawlessly, legitimate music historian especially regarding black influence on American roots music, and has branched out to tackle virtually every existing genre of music. She played banjo on Beyoncé’s recently released country record.
The player on banjo, Hubby Jenkins, was born and raised in Brooklyn, a graduate of Brooklyn Tech HS and plays multiple instruments, including the bones, and sings, while also being very learned on the history of black contributions to roots music.
One of my favorite all time bands.

One more from CCD, features Giddens playing the kazoo like I’ve never heard, Jenkins on the bones and the incorporation of a beatboxer which, I believe, is usually used in hip-hop, a musical genre I am just not familiar with.

Giddens is a supreme talent. I learned of her on that New Basement Tapes documentary, so getting back to Dylan another connection. For those that don't know of it they brought a bunch of songwriters in to write music to a bunch of discovered Dylan lyrics found in the Big Pink house. Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Marcus Mumford, Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), Giddens, and my personal #1 Elvis Costello under the direction and production of T-bone Burnett. Great stuff.

Speaking of Peter Paul and Mary, I think their biggest hit was Leavin' On a Jet Plane a John Henry Dusseldorf (John Denver) song, ironically he went on to have a bunch of hit songs, but his version of Leavin' wasn't one of them.

An early folk scene guru, Milt Okun produced early Denver albums. Got him gigs at the Bitter End when no one knew who he was. I was there for one, maybe 30 people in the entire place.

Then Denver appears on the old Merv Griffin late night talk show, and Denver's career eventually explodes. Merv Griffin was an early supporter of John Denver.

As long as you brought it up 😂 my favorite version, beautiful harmonies!!
Collaboration of two bands, Lake Street Dive are the three musicians in the back and the lady who starts singing lead.
Tiny Habits are the 3 other singers, all 7 are grads of the Berklee School of Music in Boston.

Thanks logen, this version of the song is tremendous, best one out there. Talented musicians all.

Anyone watched “Landman” on Paramount+? Season 1 finale was last night.

I found it to be a great show. Acting and storylines were terrific. Billy Bob Thornton is just off the charts as the lead character, Tommy Norris.
