Hire Mike Rice

Rice was never a loose cannon otherwise at RU. He was just caught

I have no opinion about the Rice Redemption Scheme ® but there's no way that was an isolated incident. Sociopaths aren't occasionally sociopathic. Bobby Knight wasn't happy go lucky except that time he threw a chair. Bobby Gonzalez and Richard Speck weren't crazy every once in a while. Wayne Brady wasn't devil may care and then all of a sudden this one time he choked a bitch. Crazies are crazy 24-7. Mike Rice was nuts, that's why he went to therapy. If he got better, great - and not great because basketball, great because humanity - but let's not white wash what happened: he was a teacher teaching a student by assault. If your kid's math teacher back handed him when he added wrong you wouldn't defend him, you'd kick his ass.

Yes, certainly understand your point. I guess I was indoctrinated by psycho coaches at an earlier age. You're right, if my kids math teacher did that I would. These kids are college age and handled themselves better than that, which is by setting the coach up on video. I'm pretty sure most if they wanted to could have squashed Rice as well. It appears at face value, he had gone to therapy and improved himself. No doubt somewhere inside, there is a fiery lunatic that wants to come out a bit.

I do know that it seems he has rehabbed and could offer us some help as an assistant. I'm not averse to hiring him. i doubt he will try any shenanigans again, and I'm pretty sure he can help us on the court. One of these days I'd like to see us win some basketball games..

Leaving Rice aside, the abusive behavior of various alleged "teachers"in athletics is beyond the pale. Mike Schrewschrenski swears like a sailor, as did Louie. Bobby Knight choked one of his players. Rick Pitino ran a brothel. Eddie Sutton tripped spilled a bag of cash and broke his leg tripping over it. If an anthropology teacher recruited students using prostitutes he'd be fired. If an economics teacher assaulted a recalcitrant student with Wealth of Nations he be in prison. I'm not naive but the latitude awarded college athletes, coaches and athletics is repulsive. I don't know that there's anything to be done about it, but winking at it seems the worst response.

Its definitely an issue with lots of sports. Frankly it's why I quit playing football and lacrosse in college and starts far before college. It's a good ole boys club, and if you either don't excel nor fit in for any other reason, it's a pretty poor existence. What to be done? I'm not sure.

As far as Rice, I'm not sure it's being winked at. He's paid a price for his transgressions, which leaned way past just poor behavior. He's certainly put in effort to apologize and reconcile. Lots of people have very good things to say about him. Definitely not something that is clear cut.

My theory is that the abusive coaches learned their tactics from the hands of nuns. They were masters of the trade.

I had one nun give me a hard time, the rest were angels. Even my old nemesis Sr. Lawrence was well-intended I think and I probably deserved a lot worse than I got. Really generous and for the most part really smart women. At St John's same. The only aberration was one nun who has this creepy sensual thing going that reminds me of the "Love-ahs" skit on SNL with Will Ferrel and Rachel Dratch. She spent way too much class time talking about her previous life including romances in a little too much detail.

Seems like he's successfully gone through therapy and can control his temper, so I guess we can count on him being more low key when he calls players "f----g faggots" and "f----g fairies." Personally, I found his choice of words as repulsive as his hitting players and firing basketballs at them. Hope his therapy included addressing that mindset as well.

Actually I think more kids of this generation need a good back hand, so I would be ok with it, but that's just me. ;)

This is the perfect hot button topic to get us through early summer. I'm surprised so many people are OK with the idea of bringing in Mike Rice. All for 2nd chances here, but the idea of bringing in a guy to coach defense who may help with some AAU recruits is not going to overcome the video footage of a grown man yelling obscene homophobic slurs at 18 year olds and ripping basketballs at their heads.

Not my place to say if this guy has true remorse or has been rehabilitated. Won't go there because I don't know him. But we seem to be in a very good place with '18 and '19 recruits and could lure a defensive minded coach in with less fan fare and negative attention from media/opposing coaches.

He did take this one well :)

Lavin playing better defense on Brownlee than our guys the last two years. Notice he is in front of his man with his hands up? ;) :)

I know Mike Rice a bit and know people who know him very well. One's reaction to the videos is what one's reaction is going to be and all are entitled to their viewpoint. I do know Mike Rice is and always has been a good man, and in this overly litigious society I think it is telling that not only did NONE of his players use the public videos and the associated outrage to try and profit, the same number, ZERO, had anything bad to say about him publicly. That's NONE.
Now that doesn't mean no one should be outraged at the videos, as I said, that is perfectly understandable and valid. I am not offended at all; I played for high school football and basketball coaches for whom that is tame behavior. My opinion may be mostly generational and obviously the world has changed in such matters. But no person is one thing and methodology aside, every player I talked to on that Rutgers team, about 1/2 of it, clearly thought Rice's actions were to make them better players, a better team. Now I have no desire to debate his actions, I understand the outrage; I don't agree with it but I certainly understand it. Having said that, I think Rice would be an excellent addition to the staff regardless if he brings in recruits with him or not. As for 2nd chances, we all deserve them, especially since he sought out and received counseling and has gone back to ground zero to re-invent himself.

I don't know Mike Rice. I don't know any Rutgers players who played for him. I didn't play high school football. My opinion is that the politically correct police tend to have as many, if not more, personality defects as the people they condemn. Coaches can be high strung, fiery and foul mouthed. Our arena is named after a character who ran up and down the sidelines, kicked chairs and almost got into fisticuffs with a rival coach. Mike Rice is a wimp in basketball toughness next go legend Bobby Knight. Let the redmen.com member who has not sinned or is not borderline insane cast the first stone!

That's me on the left BTW. If I was going to reinvent myself I would become George Clooney. He just sold his company for ONE BILLION DOLLARS!

There's a little he-doth-protest-too-much in that sort of combination of rhetoric and violence. Not that there's anything wrong with that?

II do know Mike Rice is and always has been a good man

Yeah, Mike Rice is and was always a good man, even when he was assaulting his students for their own good. Who else can we put on the list of the always good men. Probably the baby Jesus. Oh wait, Jesus disobeyed his parents and consorted with prostitutes and if you believe Bertrand Russell was mean to swine. Augustine of Hippo was a whore monger, Thomas More suffered from the sin of pride, Gandhi was a Nazi sympathizer, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela were adulterers, and Tom Jefferson owned slaves. So just Mike Rice then.

Ah, another example of your "Good Will Hunting intelligence"; as in "I can't learn anything from you I can't read in some book." To people with a modicum of real intelligence the term "good" is relative. But don't let common sense get in the way of your inane, boring drivel. And if throwing a basketball even remotely qualifies as assault you are even less intelligent than I picture and you prove post after post.

If you know Dr. Fun you would know you mentioned the wrong Larry! ;)

Hire Mike Rice. He is something this staff needs. Not only intensity, but also college coaching experience.. He worked wonders at Robert Morris with little talent. Something tells me that Mullin respects Rice's intensity.

Hire him understanding it will be his platform to gain a head coach job somewhere within 2 or so years, so be it. Hire him.

Mike Rice was 16 and 38 in the Big East. Is there someone around who was 17 and 37 and wasn't fired for being a sociopath?

I mean we are sitting at 8-28. 8-10 next year would be... good?
