Hire Mike Rice

This will be a grave mistake for the program.

Unless they give him a contract like Slice and it falls apart as quickly as Slice, I think calling it a grave mistake is a tad bit dramatic.

I am for giving him a chance. But lets look back and stop putting all the blame on slice I believe there is more to this story and CM MUST TAKE SOME OF THE BLAME

Not sure where I blamed Slice for anything in my post. . .

Forgive me i did mean you just seems that many posters tend to speak negative about him when we truly do not know what cause the riff btw friends or what or if promises
where broken. The man left a secure good job to help his buddy

Can we stop with the buddies. They knew each other but did not hang out and were not close friends. Slice thought he would have more say in the huddle, in recruiting and other areas. Whether that was promised or not, you are right we don't know. As far as criticism goes, Slice gets criticized by other posters mostly because despite his reputation of being a great recruiter, he did not bring in the recruits while he was here. The other criticism has been about his salary and the term of his contract and the fact we still have to pay it. That's not a criticism of him but of the people who gave it to him. Oh, and he left a secure job for another secure job with what he felt would be the No. 1 assistant and for a contract with more favorable terms in salary and length and without it, he wouldn't have left Kentucky. No, he is no longer working but he is still secure as he is still getting paid for the length of his contract while not working.

As far as Rice goes, I see both sides and am on the fence on whether I would want him here if an opening on the staff occurred.

How will the School deal with the NY media's predictable over the top response to this hire?

You would hear positives from NY Post, i.e. Zach & bloggers like Zagoria I expect. Who cares about the NY Times where this may not sit well.

I think it will end up being re-packaged as a story of redemption, forgiveness and second chances etc. What he did was wrong but he didn't kill anybody. I've had coaches who weren't much different. If you kept screwing up in football practice and they'd grab you by the face mask and toss you where they wanted you.

I honestly don't get the intensity level of the Rice conversation. This is not a situation where we are starting from ground zero and building a staff and every hire is critical. Nor is it a situation (like Lavin) where there was a critical hole on the staff (in that case, somebody who knew something about basketball) that needed to be filled.

To the contrary, our recruiting is as good as anyone could reasonably hope for it to be, St. Jean has proved to be a good X and O man as the players gained some maturity and learned how to play the game at this level, and Mullin has taken strides on almost a game-by-game basis as a head coach.

So it isn't as though we don't have a ship, or that the ship be sinking. All we are talking about here is whether we can add a coach to the staff (which the Slice situation has prevented us from doing for a while) who might bring something to the table. My personal opinion is that Rice would be a fine addition to the staff for a few reasons. Maybe I'm wrong. If so, I'm pretty sure Mullin will figure it out and the program will move on.

The bottom line is that there is potentially a fair amount of upside here, and really no downside. And either way, it really isn't the sort of thing that should provoke hyperventilation one way or the other. If it works, great. If not, it isn't a disaster. Anything in between, ok.

And either way, it isn't all that useful to be trashing someone who may end up at St. John's.

To me, recruits aside, Rice would help shore up defense I believe, a huge dividend. Of course his current group of kids & his NJ contacts sure would surely help. If this does not come to fruition, so be it. Johnnies seem in good stead.

I blame the people involved in giving Slice the outlandish contract.

Agree with others that this is not a make or break the program prospective opportunity.

There is no excuse for how Rice conducted himself at Rutgers, and SJU will obviously have to get comfortable that those actions are behind him.

If so, the upside of adding as an assistant someone who has been to the tournament twice as a HC, got a head job in a power conference, has spent time as an assistant at 6 different D1 programs, and has deep-rooted connections in arguably the most significant HS basketball state in the country shouldn’t be understated.

This is high major college hoops, Rice can really coach the game and has accomplished quite a bit at age 48. If he has indeed earned a second chance I think it would likely be a very good thing for SJU if he got that opportunity here as opposed to somewhere else.

Why not give him a second chance? Can he be managed?
Is he better than what we have on staff currently? What does he add? What do we need? Defense, defense, defense.

Take a chance? Why not?

Not much risk if hired as a new assistant. Often, the manic personality types only go crazy when promoted to head coach - Fran, Kevin Bannon, Gonzo, Gordon Chiesa, as well as Rice, are just the local guys who were unable to behave.

SJU 1512
I wholeheartedly agree AND
I think you, Mr. P, Knight and the movers and shakers should - on behalf of our program - call Mike Rice today AND offer him the job!!!
No further procrastination. As I did through Georgia - swiftness being the goal lest some other program swoop in!
Settled!
Chris Mullin et al. can bless and consecrate your actions after the fact
:) :cheer: :silly:

Duplication my bad

I would imagine that, if he comes aboard, it would be with an eye towards returning to the head coaching ranks (likely/hopefully at another school) within a few years. Even with the alarm/stress that would cause on this board, I still hope that he is given an opportunity to join the staff, and that he accepts. Really could be a material ingredient in helping to push things forward here.

I'm guessing if he was hired you are going to get over a 90% very positive reaction from the board

It'll be closer to100% if Rice can bring a couple of his top studs to St John's with him

Or one in particular. Not counting on "package deal" despite recent buzz re Lewis & Antoine going that route. More often than not, these arrangements don't happen.

Not counting on anything so I won't be disappointed. ;)
For the hire to work Rice would have to be hired as an assistant coach and Mitch Richmond likely returning to the special advisor role. There is always the possibility of St. Jean returning to the NBA but the players love him.

Mitch more likely to make that exit at this point than St.Jean perhaps.
