Actually, Rutgers' lacrosse team is highly ranked this year
And their wrestling team is clearly on the rise
The men's basketball, under Steve Piekell, improved greatly this year as well
When they get their full share of the B1G money in about 4-5 years, watch out!!

Are you referring to C. Vivian Stringer?
She was 6-24 this year.
Not saying Pikell cannot eventually be a success but this year his record was built on beating a bunch of cupcakes-went like 3-15 in conference. As for football been hearing that for a long time. It will be tough for them to be a sleeping giant in hoops and football in the BIG10.
I have been hearing this "watch out" spiel about Rutgers for years. The problem Rutgers has is they have resistance from some academic people within the University itself. Subsequently, they are attempting to break in with schools that are already "all in" on major college sports specifically football. My son went to Penn State and the facilities are amazing. We would all kill for a basketball arena like Bryce Jordan at Penn State and their b-ball team is still struggling to escape the football shadow. Rutgers is not even close. I can only imagine what Michigan and Ohio State look like. Forget football. They can have a competitive team once in awhile but in my opinion they will never be consistent winners in that landscape.
This year (basketball) they loaded up on cupcakes as they knew this would be a tough year. Pikell may be able to get some players but again he was crushed in conference. The basketball climb will be achievable (hey 5 players is doable) but again consistent recruiting and attracting talent against that conference and against Seton Hall out of conference and in state will make that difficult as well.

Piekel is a very good coach and NJ is a fertile area to recruit
I really think that he has a chance to turn it around

I'm a big fan of Pikiell and think he's going to do well there. But I'm with all of you, until Rutgers decides they want to update their infrastructure and put money into top notch athletic facilities, they are never going to compete in the B10. It just isn't an attractive school to recruits.

Relative to Rice - how realistic is this to happening ? If Richmond slides back over to special assistant, does Rice seem like a fit with rest of staff ?

Hell we have more of a chance to make the tournament in the next 5 years than they do.
I'm a big fan of rice. Lots of versatility. Can be used in a ton of different combinations.
But I have to admit rice alone is pretty bland. It's nice. It's filling. But it always feels like there's something missing.
That's why you really need two or three or, hell, four things to add to rice. Then you have something satisfying. Then you have something worth remembering.
