Head Coaching Changes

Here's a name for Texas assuming Beard says no.  This is just speculation but if John Calipari ever wanted an out from the Kentucky bubble Texas would be perfect. Great job, limitless resources and second banana at school so less pressure.  Now Calipari has given zero indication he would ever leave UK so just spitballing.

Well considering Texas has not hid the fact they are going after Chris Beard from fellow B12 school TT not sure that gentleman's agreement exists anymore. said:
They tried to go inside their conference?  Dirty move. I hope the ADs and Presidents had a chat before he was talked to.

Seem to remember some of our fans wanting to go after Jay Wright believe at the time when we ended up with Norm.

I wanted SJU to hire Jay when the hired Jarvis.  You could see from his work at Hofstra that he was an excellent recruiter and coach (though I can't say I thought he would be this good).  Wright's Hofstra teams and Brey's U Delaware teams were like middleweight prize fights for a few years there.

I don't remember discussion of Jay when they hired Norm.  I remember Matt Doherty, Billy Donovan, Rick Pitino being discussed on the board (the last two always are by SJU fans, it seems).

Yeah Wright had just completed his first winning season at the time Jarvis was hired.  It would have been a reach at that time I think.  But my memory sucks.

Woodson can coach but no college experience - he's going to need a couple of recruiters on staff and somebody who knows how to deal with college kids.  Not a stone cold lead pipe lock of a hire by IU

If Payne is out for DePaul job, and if Moser stays at Loyola, who would Blue Demons look to next?

Just passing on a rumor from a friend in Morgantown, WV.  Pitt might try to convince Calipari to come home to Pitt, where he was previously an assistant, and the area where he grew up.

While you can never say never, why would John Calipari leave Kentucky?

Here is my recollection of the Jarvis-Jay Wright situation.  After Jarvis' second season (we won 25 games and the Big East tourney), he was a hot commodity.  He played footsie with Michael Jordan for a few weeks about coaching the Wizards.  Jordan was running the team at that time.  It was reliably reported on this board and many other places that if Jarvis left, we would have hired Wright, who at that time was coming off his first of two NCAA tournament appearances.  Of course, Jarvis didn't leave and Wright made the NCAAs again the following year, and 'Nova fired Steve Lappas and hired him.

One of the great "what ifs" in Johnnies history, along with...

Lew Alcindor to UCLA instead of St. John's
Julius Erving to UMass instead of St, John's
Not hiring Bob McKillop one of two times - after Jarvis or after Norm...

Yes that is one of the times but as Fordham stated we did go after him while he was at Nova mistakenly thinking we could lure him away.

New challenge?

Prove you can build something anywhere? (Just in case people have forgotten about UMass)

Wonder if DePaul even has interest in Moser. With Marquette and Indiana off the board that’s gotta be the best Midwest job open now.

Screwed himself by coaching his team too well. If they had bowed out earlier he would already have been introduced as Marquette's new coach.

Indiana's hoping this hire will be their version of Juwan Howard
But, you're right - Howard has Phil Martelli as his right hand man
Woodson will probably need a similar guy at his side to be successful

But he already proved that twice, at UMASS and Memphis. He's won one NC at Kentucky in 12 years. Have to assume he wants at least one more in his career. Chances are much better at Kentucky then at Pitt. I don't see him going to another college program, unless Kentucky fans/boosters get fed up with him,  but anything is possible I guess.

Principal difference being Woodson is accomplished coach with tons of HC experience.  The Howard, Hoiberg (1st time), Mullin, Ewing ex-athlete hire are not.  They benefit from having the former experienced HC involved as an assistant.  Woodson's a different scenario.  He will need (a) as identified above, guys who know the recruiting landscape and (b) guys who have experience running a college program and dealing with college kids.  The second part is where an experienced assistant of some kind can be an asset - not necessarily an ex-HC, although nothing wrong with that, but someone who can bring ample experience in that regard to the table.

I think it would be way easier to convince another Pittsburgh guy -- Archie Miller -- but after this season nothing will shock me anymore.

Plus, I don't know how sentimental Calipari is. I have fond memories of Elmont, but there's no way in hell I'd ever move back.
