Head Coaching Changes

You have heard of 'drug rehab" where someone spends time rehabilitating themselves and moves back to resume what is hoed to be a normal life; well think of Iona as Piton's "Reputation Rehab" where Pitino spends 2 or 3 seasons rehabilitating his NCAA reputation by demonstrating that he has run a "clean" program and then is hired by a P6  program.

Ordinarily I'd agree, but when known cheaters like Miller and Wade are still allowed to be around, Pitino has already done more penance than either of them. If I need to hit a home run with my hire I'm not hesitating on calling him, especially if my boss isn't a priest.

it will be very interesting with the crazy transfers this off season who Pitino can get. He may start next season with an outstanding line up without having to break the rules.
It will be the most interesting off season ever in college Bball.

Not to beat a dead horse but just saying from people I know.......Pitino isn't leaving Iona Its exactly what he wants and hes happy hes building something there with a tourney birth in his first year. From what ive heard he isn't going anywhere.....I respect rick and wish he got hired here, but cool to see how well he did with his Iona team year 1

During the Norm era (pre restaurant scandal) I would lobby hard at games and on here for Rick to be coach at Sju But the three scandals at Louisville soured my taste for Rick .I agree with the previous poster Iona in a way is a perfect spot for Rick, he’s 68 he’s not a big public school or private for that matter with wealthy alumni, over the top liberal Administration, a lot of media hype scrutiny, his program is under the radar(even though he’s on it) if that makes sense. Next year he could get grad transfers who need that last push to make the league and he’s a good enough coach to get them there. Going to an Indiana would be a huge undertaking, a longer rebuild, national pressure every night. Better to stay under the radar like he did this year until March madness starts then make a run. Ideal for him and Iona.

Pitons has a $10m buyout. Who would pay to buy out a guy that is essentially a 5-7 year rental before retirement?

It all would depend.   When Boeheim or coach K retire is anyone's guess.

If a school wants Rick, and Rick really wants the school, I don't see 10 Mil being a problem even for a 5-7 year rental. For instance, a school is willing to pay 5 Mil to Rick, Rick says give me 4 Mil for 7 years and take the other 7 Mil and put it toward the buyout. That leaves 3 Mil that any big booster would easily cough up to get a Rick Pitino. Obviously the numbers can be played with. Rick doesn't need the money, so I think he'd be willing to take less in order to have some of the money go towards the buyout. But who knows, maybe with this current culture of college basketball with all the transfers, maybe he can make a run at a NC at Iona. Longahot, but I most certainly wouldn't put it past him. If he can do that, he stays. If he can't, he jumps ship. I remember our fans saying early on that we'll always be the big dog in town. I hope they're right, but I wonder if they feel any differently now then they did when Pitino was 1st hired? Like him or not, he's a force of nature. Anyone who dismissed him was making a big mistake.

Pitino is like the A-Rod or Bonds of college basketball.  So good, he didn't have to cheat to be the best, but he did anyway.

The buyout is not as restrictive as you might think.  If Rick doesn't want to be there, the buyout will become negotiable.  Iona will take something like $3 million in "free money" as opposed to holding a coach that doesn't want to be there.

I am not surprised Rick is saying he wants to stay.  He presumably has recruits coming to Iona to play for him.  Unless he has a another job in his pocket, he is going to avoid any inkling that he may not return.

Last thought.......Rick Pitino is Rick Pitino and will ultimately behave like Rick Pitino.

Sounds like Shaka smart is on shaky ground. Next few days will be interesting down there

Would be crazy IMO. And a few other schools would jump for joy. Would hate to see him at a place like Marquette or DePaul. He wouldn’t have a problem picking his spot tho.

Waiting for the cries to get Iona into the Big East.

St. John's, Seton Hall and others would promptly veto any Iona- Big East talk.

More likely would be Iona to the A10 and Fordham to the Patriot where Fordham already plays football.

Iona is in an easy league and it’s a cakewalk for them to get into the tourney, especially with an overqualified coach like Pitino in there.  Why change that?

Loyola Chicago seems like they would be a nice Big East fit. A Catholic private school in a big market with a good basketball program. DePaul would promptly veto it so it’ll never happen though.

That would be unprecedented.  That loss last night was bad no doubt but firing a coach who beat Kansas twice said:
