Harkless Update

This next season will really tell what direction Moe's career goes in. Two big things affected him this past season IMO. First, he had to play with Tobias Harris for a whole season. Harris has an extra year on Moe and is the more polished player. I'd venture the second, a common pitfall for second year guys, is that he likely worked on his weaknesses too much (outside shooting) and ignored what he did well...rebounding and easy baskets. The good news is the Magic dumped Glenn Davis, allowing Harris to play more four. I think Harkless and Harris are a big enough combo to co-exist at the three and four next to Vucevic. I'm not a huge fan of Oladipo, but last year's draft was awful. Moe is actually a year younger than Oladipo. Moe just turned 21 Sunday.

Good point about Harkless's age. When I compare him to someone like Chandler Parsons: He's also listed at 6'9'' and has the same build.
Parsons scored 16.6 Pts per game, on 47% field goal % and 37% from the three-point line... and 74% from the free-throw line with 5.5 rebounds... but all on 37 minutes a game.

But Parsons is 25 years old...

Maurice really isn't that far away from that kind of efficiency.. he's already there with the field goal and three-point %... he just needs to stay on the court more, get some more shots and improve going to rim, getting rebounds, drawing fouls, etc. He can really make it and make a boat-load of money if he works his tail off.

Great news for Moe today, as the Magic traded Afflalo to the Nuggest for Evan Fournier. Fournier was the #20 pick in the 2012 draft (after Moe) and plays SG at 6'6. Afflalo was more of a SF than Fournier, and this could open up some minutes for Moe. Fournier seems like a sixth or seventh man type right now.
Hopefully the Magic take Exum or Smart.

Aaron Gordon? That can't be good for Moe. Was hoping for Smart.
Another forward Dario Saric at 12!

Magic traded Saric for the UL-Lafayette guard who went to Philly at #10 (I can't remember his name, unfortunately).
Elfrid Peyton, Gary Peyton's son a pt g

That is who it was, but he's not Gary Payton's son. His father, Elfrid Sr., was an all-star in the Canadian Football League.

Oops was having dinner at a restaurant with a TV on and they were showing highlights of Gary Peyton so I wrongly assumed they were related. Hadn't really heard of him until draft talk.

I was very surprised that Gordon was selected #4 in the draft. Watched him play many times here in Arizona, not an offensive threat. Has defensive and rebounding skills. Moe should be alright.

I thought he was taken a little high myself. He is very similar to Tobias Harris in size and position, but clearly way more athletic and much less skilled.
Both are slightly undesized for the four, but the offense-defense might make a good platoon.

If Moe can put himself ahead of Fournier, it could be clear sailing for a long time. The Magic might be really good in two years.

Mo needs to come into this season with a more consistent outside shot

Moe did improve his outside shot. He went from 28% from three in his first year to 38% in his second year. He finished #50 out 151 NBA eligible shooters according to ESPN. So he's in the top-third.
Of course he has to get better at that, but he has to improve his free throw shooting. It's abysmal for a small forward at 59%.
He also has to get more aggresive and shoot more. Hopefully he's fully confident going into his third season.
He can have a long term NBA career. He just has to keep on crafting his game and not get lazy.

I've said since we signed him, Moe's outside shot will be a huge strength for him in time--perhaps his biggest. He improved to an awesome 38% this past season (only 1.9 attempts per game), but it seems he went away from the other things that he was successful at as a rookie. Hopefully this year he puts it all together...as he continues to add muscle and strength, get better defensively, and tighten up the handle, he could be a really good player. I wish the Knicks would make a move for him now before his stock goes up. He could be had relatively cheap I'd imagine and has all the tools to be an All-Star in two to three years.

The one puzzling aspect to his game is the FT shooting. 59% over two years for a SF with his stroke is just mind-boggling. At at true 6'8.5/6'9 and now 220 pounds...the kid could be ungaurdable when he starts to add that muscle around 25-28 year of age period.

I see Paul George potential when I look at this kid. He just turned 21. George, who did two years at Fresno State, averaged only 7.8 ppg as a 20-year-old rookie and only 12.1 ppg as a 21 year old second year player before blowing up year three. The one thing I think Moe could have benefited from was an extra year in college as "the man." He seems too timid.

I watched this almost a year ago and I couldnt believe how much he reminded me of Moe when he was at St Johns

Remarkably similar players from height, length and build, to skill set. George has a slightly better handle, and I think the extra year in college gave him the mindset or muscle memory to look to score/attack immediately. Moe was an afterthought as a 19 year old rookie and took only what was available...for a timid and nice kid that was probably not best for him. Had he come back for his soph season he would have been near 20 points and ten boards a game with a reliable jumper and huge role offensively. That would likely have resulted in a lottery pick and a bigger role as a rookie this past season than he had had as a second year player. I'm not sure the Magic value Moe as much as they should with the investments in Oladipo and now Gordon. I think Moe has more potential than both, he just has to have a scoring mentality instilled in him.

This hurts Moe and his playing time;

@WojYahooNBA: Channing Frye has agreed to a four-year, $32 million deal with the Magic, source tells Yahoo Sports.

Harkless did not play in Orlando's opener. Anyone know if he is hurt.

He ended the year decently last year too, so it makes me wonder if it has to do with his work ethic or behavior in practice
