Harkless Update

He needs to go somewhere he can be a priority. They are going to bring in yet another high draft pick and Moe will fall down the ladder even further. Quincy Miller isn't doing so bad in Denver.

Quincy Miller?
Please. You were on him back during the draft and he still hasn't done a thing.

I agree he has to go somewhere though because in all likelihood they will draft someone of the Wiggins, Randle, Parker like further crowding the depth chart.

From where he was at last year to now, Quincy has come a long way. I think a similar situation could benefit Moe.

Moe played every game as a rookie. While Miller toiled in the D-League.
Moe still is playing a lot more than MIller.
Just not seeing the correlation.
Lets just agree on the change of scenery and call it a day.

In a pretty surprising move to me the Magic bought out Big Baby Davis so he is no longer a member of the team. This should free up more time for Moe. Davis was averaging 12 pts and 6 boards and started 43 of 45 games. Talk about cutting your losses.

Great news for Moe. Now, if they can only realize this team is three years away and get what they can for Afflalo, Moe would be in business.

If he is not a priority on one of the worst teams in the NBA where do you think he can go that would make him a priority? The D league? He just needs to continue to work on his game and yes a change of scenery may help but at this point no one is going to acquire him with the idea of making him a priority, maybe down the road.

How many think Moe should have stay in school another yr

Nobody should. He was a Top half of the 1st round pick. And he's still not even drinking age.

*Besides he probably would have regressed here.

The last 9 games Harkless has been given more minutes and is averaging 12 points 4.5 boards and over a block a game. The best thing that can happen to him is the Magic trading Afflalo in the offseason, as he is probably a bit too old to be worth much with the super young talent the team will have after this draft.

Hard to really say that. Would it have helped him? Probably. But the kid was almost a lottery pick in the draft. That's a lot of guaranteed money to pass up for a 19 year old.

The risk of injury is just too great.

Moe had a nice shooting night.
7-9 from field. 3-3 from 3. 17 Points. 4 rebounds and two steals.... five turnovers though.

Edit, adding this line: He's shooting 39% from the three on the season. He improved a lot. Weirdly, he's still stuck at 59% from the free-throw line. He has to improve that.
Hopefully the Magic take a point-guard in this draft and he stays a regular starter.

It's irresponsible to stay in school if you are going to be picked in the 1st round. College will always be there guaranteed 3 year rookie contracts will not.

Since the NBA season came to a close...might as well go back and review his second year compared to his rookie season.

Year 2 vs. Year 1 stats:

Minutes per game:
24.4 vs. 26.0 (down marginally)

Field Goal Percentage:
46.4% vs. 46.1% - basically the same

Three Point %
38.3% vs. 27.4% - this where he improved his game the most. He was ranked #50 in the league; about 150 players had enough shots to qualify to be considered. That's pretty good for a 6'9'' guy who supposedly plays pretty good defense.

Free Throw %
59.4% vs. 57.0% - this was perhaps the most disappointing statistic. For a guy that shoots 38% from three, he has to shoot better from the free-throw line. It doesn't look he took enough free-throws to qualify to be included in the league stats, bu his 59.4% would have put him at 118th in the league if he had qualified. He must improve this.

Steals per game: (very good considering he only played 24 minutes a game)
1.2 vs. 1.2 - good for 44th in the league - very solid for his minutes played.

Assists per game:
1.0 vs. 0.7 - improved, but probably needs a little more work.

Rebounds
3.3 vs. 4.4 - This one is puzzling. He went backwards a bit. Partially because he played a little less...but perhaps because he had more big guys playing around him this year to vacuum up rebounds? Or maybe he's playing more on the wing?

Total Points per game:
7.4 vs 8.2

Overall, it seems like an acceptable season - but I'm sure he wants more. He has the talent improve.
He lost a lot of playing time in the mid-season, but he picked it up in the 2nd half of the season.
Keep working Maurice.

I hope the Magic take a PG - that'd be good for him.

Thoughts?

would have been his junior year in college. I think the numbers are decent

As an addendum to the above post:
2014: Pre All-star game vs. Post All-star game stats... a little better in the second half:

Pre All-Star game:
6.5 pts per game / 45.5% field goal % / 36.7% three point field goal % / 1.1 steals

Post All-star game:
9.0 pts per game / 47.6% field goal % / 40.0.% three point field goal % / 1.4 steals

Did anyone watch any Magic games? Was his defense considered solid?

This next season will really tell what direction Moe's career goes in. Two big things affected him this past season IMO. First, he had to play with Tobias Harris for a whole season. Harris has an extra year on Moe and is the more polished player. I'd venture the second, a common pitfall for second year guys, is that he likely worked on his weaknesses too much (outside shooting) and ignored what he did well...rebounding and easy baskets. The good news is the Magic dumped Glenn Davis, allowing Harris to play more four. I think Harkless and Harris are a big enough combo to co-exist at the three and four next to Vucevic. I'm not a huge fan of Oladipo, but last year's draft was awful. Moe is actually a year younger than Oladipo. Moe just turned 21 Sunday.
