Guys We Missed Out On

Sammy Bones-Thompkins had a nice second half on Sunday vs Syracuse with 11 pts including 3 threes. looks to have a very nice shooting stroke.

That helped bring him up to 4.7 ppg. Having him this season may have helped when Mussini is exhausted, but I would rather have other guys over the next three seasons.

True, but he's only playing 13 mins/game and he is shooting 44% from 3.

Maybe this has been mentioned before but during the Steve Lavin era Darrick Wood committed to us. After he uncommitted to us, he played JUCO ball and then subsequently wound up at DePaul. This is his second season with the Blue Demons and while he is not a star by any means, he is in their rotation and is a serviceable Big East player.

The role he played against us was largely insignificant in our two DePaul games last season. Hopefully that trend continues tonight and we get our first conference victory against Wood and the Blue Demons.

Another one of our misses;

Minnesota dismisses guard Carlos Morris

Little Rick's ship is sinking, still winless in Big 10.

I guess there aren't many players at all that I think we truly missed out on, because I really, really, really wanted this guy, but up until this post had forgotten completely about him.

Oakland's Max Hooper has taken 206 shots this season, all of them from behind the 3-point line. He's hitting 45.6% of those shots, and he'll get to improve upon that today as his Golden Grizzlies face Wright State. Live on ESPNU,

And as soon as the tournament comes, he won't get any shots off against the high major opponent they draw in the first round. The point guard is damn good, however.

He got his shot off against Mich St earlier this season. Maybe the difference is now he has a coach who actually runs plays for him to spot up.

Don't see him as a player "we missed out on." He did play for us and -- whether the fault lies with with him or the coaching staff -- he didn't show much when the had the chances to.

I think the issue is mostly does he deserve his own thread? I would vote a resounding "no," so I personally have no trouble with posters sticking him here.

Agree. I just enjoy seeing how former recruits we were in on or former players are doing. In this case I find it cool that Max has found his niche at the right level.

Agree Paultz. Maybe in the right type of offense scheme and with the right coaching Max could have eventually been a contributor at the level as a shooting specialist. But clearly he is now playing at a level more suited for his athletic abilities and skill sets. Good for him!

No problem with Hooper being included in this thread (too many real problems to deal with). Was just noting that, unlike the other names cited in this thread, he wasn't someone whom we missed out on. That's all.

Maybe he should be included in a thread entitled "Guys we had but let get away" :)

There's a number of them that do come to mind. :)

Sorry, misinterpreted your post.

me too. Good thing I'm not a recruiter

Caught the second half of the Oakland-Valpo game (won by Valpo). Max Hooper was 0-2 (with 3 pts. on FTs), including an ill-advised 3-point launch with about 12 seconds to and Oakland down by 4 that drove his coach ballistic. Earlier the color analyst commented that Valpo played "tight defense" against him, hence the poor showing. Hmm, don't they do that in the Big East as well? From what saw tonight, the guy's (still) strictly a one-dimensional player, and tonight he looked as unimpressive as he did for us.

The player that bothers me a lot is Gathers. A 4 year player who slipped out of our hands ,a muscular rebounder. Could we have used him.

I wouldn't say he slipped thru our fingers

Jessie Govan is going to be a very good big. I guess SJU tried, but still a loss for those who favor big, strong interior players with skill.

Not going to fault anyone for matriculating at G'Town, especially if they are there for the education.

That said, wasn't former Redmen star Ty Grant his (assistant) coach at Wings?

Would like to think he tried to steer him to SJU, but don't know if that is a fact.

We did try. I saw him at several SJU games with his HS coach. Yes, Ty was an AC at Wings.
