Guys on Matt’s Radar

Okay!

That is one of the very few cases where that formula led to success last year; however even there, the one big was 7' tall and 280 pounds and one of the "guards" was 6'8". They also had a 6'9" 245 frosh available to spell their big.[/quote]

To be fair Villanova has mastered this as well. I believe at one point two years ago Josh Hart played heavy minutes at center for Nova. I suspect Marvin Clarke will be shifting from Small Forward- Power Forward and Center on occasions. With a lineup ( assuming we get LJ and Ponds returns) of

1) Ponds
2) Simon
3) LJ
4) Clarke
5) Keita

That’s five guys that can shoot the three; at least three of these guys ( Simon, Clarke and LJ) shot over 40 percent from three (41%, 40% and 48 percent).

Sju grad 13 - not trying to be argumentative, but the Nova team from the year before last had Daryl Reynolds at 6'9 235, Eric Paschall at 6'9 255 and Jenkins at 6'6 235 and the team year before that had Ochefu instead of Paschall. Nova's final 4 team from 2009 was very small, but these clubs are few and far between and almost always have a serviceable second big man to at least spell the one starter if he gets in foul trouble or tired. 3 pt. percentages aside (and Simon's was small sample, Ponds percentage poor and Keita completely unproven from 3), you generally need a couple of bigs to be successful. Hope I am wrong since we seem to be headed in a different direction.

More like four guards and one big question mark.

Always happy to have a kid commit to us, but this one is a head scratcher. Not trying to be Debbie Downer, and I could be totally wrong, but appears we've picked up two mediocre transfers.

Was a Top 100 kid coming out of high school, No. 92 on Rivals FYI. Realize his numbers weren't great at Miss. State, but he's not a bum.

Not suggesting he's a bum. But his statistics are very unimpressive. Could be a surprise, but this signing does not excite me. Don't understand it, particularly when we're involved with Figueroa and the kid from Rider. No big man in sight.

I think his story is similar to Simon's. Buried beneath a lot of guard depth. Also like Simon has a friend on the team with Keita so hopefully helps with chemistry.

His numbers weren't good two years in a row. Then again he is from Owensboro Kentucky and we beat out Louisville and Kentucky for his services. Too bad we have to wait a whole year to reap the benefits. Two sit out transfers! Let's go for a trifecta so we won't have to recruit next year!

Except Mississippi State ain't Arizona. That being said, I'll stop the negativity and show the kid some love. I hope he does incredible and I end up eating a lot of crow. I'll be the first to say I've never seen him play.

Two sit out transfers and a third kid on scholarship who apparently may not be healthy enough to play all year. Next year's squad is shaping up to be as thin as this year's.

We need another contributor for this year. If we don’t get one we are going to have the same depth problem we just had after loosing Lovett.

well if we land only 1 more player who can play next year I hope its either a good big man or fig but I'm going to be disappointed if we dont get a big man for the 2nd year in a row

I agree. Staff knows they have no shot at 18’ grad transfers & probably no top 100 for 19’. We are St. John’s. We are mediocre at best. Get used to this staffs effort b/c none of them, including hall of Famer Mullin are going anywhere. Two bad sit out transfers. What a joke. DePaul will be better

Got to disagree. Transfers have been our bread and butter. Marvin Clark, Justin Simon, and Owens are/were some of our better players. There is nothing wrong with recruiting transfers or Jucos for that matter. The concern is not our reliance on transfers in my estimation, it's our inability to balance the roster.

It’s not that he’s a bad pick up. But we have more urgent needs. Would rather go after JUCO kid,Burk and grad transfer big.
