Guys on Matt’s Radar
So basically we've written off recruiting any metro-area HS guards for the '19 and '20 classes. And here I thought that building strong ties with local programs and keeping talent at home was supposed to be the backbone of the CM era.
It is happening since the loss of Slice.

While having ties with local schools is good, the staff has to also go for the players they feel may make an impact. How many of you remember how Lavin was destroyed on this board for not recruiting Omar Calhoun and Jon Severe out of Christ The King. Then there were the lies put out by Arbitello that Lavin's staff did not enter his gym. The reason I can say this is a lie is because I went to CTK with Tony Chiles and Rico on a few occasions. I also sat next to Lavin when he watched Adonis play.

At the present time, Matt has established a great relationship with Coach Pollard from Jefferson, the school that blessed us with Shamorie. He has two guards, classes of 20 & 21 that are very good. Jalen Nesmith's father has contacted the staff and let them know that his son is interested in St Johns. He is also class of 20. What I am trying to say is New York is no longer producing stud players year after year.

I agree that the staff does have to take a player that they feel makes the biggest impact but New York right now is on a strong trend up with high school kids. I know that you know about CTK ( Moussa and Ryan) Hayes ( Touissant, Jaylen and if he can get healthy Adam Cisse) Stepinac kids, St Rays ( Gary in particular), Jefferson kids and the list goes on of kids that could be special. I am happy at the caliber of transfer that the staff is getting .. I just hope the staff does have it in there plans to mix it up with these transfers and some of the best area high school kids .

I’m not a huge fan of signing another transfer especially a sophomore. Theoretically can’t this kid play one year and leave as a grad transfer?

Yes, welcome!

But as for the coming season, I am very disappointed if no additional frontcourt help is secured. If that is the case, Roberts becomes the key player as he needs to show something. Don't want to put that kind of pressure on the young man, but we would in that scenario need him to step up and give us some depth and utility where we had none this past year. Otherwise, we are doomed to repeat a lot of the shortcomings we had. )-:

Welcome Mr. Wright.

I don’t see a big man on the horizon for next years team.
Paultzman-
Are we going to hear of another signing in the next few days, or was Eli the recruit you alluded to the other day?

Anything heard on a BIG?

I was actually pleasantly surprised seeing this news. Top 100 consensus 4 star kid out of HS and a 6'4 big guard. Maybe I feel good about it because I think of Justin Simon being a big time HS recruit that didn't do well at AZ and is shining at SJ. I would love to snatch some of the NYC area talent every cycle, but we all know most of them go running away so we need to have a national presence recruiting. Harrison is from Texas, remember? You need to have a mix of both but we can't be reliant on one or the other exclusively.

That being said, of course you all know my POV that we need 2 solid bigs to have a good chance at the tourney next year and 1 solid big transfer to have any real chance. It's very frustrating, because we are so close to having a roster we can all be confident about without any glaring holes, but we just can't seem to get that final puzzle piece. Again, the fact that we can offer tons of PT to a solid big transfer for next year on a potential NCAA tourney team and keep getting spurned speaks volumes. Btw the expectations I mentioned are obviously only if Ponds returns.

I think this is a good signing for us. Highly rated kid that was buried for 2 years behind a deep backcourt.

He has good size for a guard st 6’4” and he looks strong. Noted as a good defender from the things I’ve read about him. He will be Simon’s replacement if he were to leave after next season.

How many scholarships do we have left, 2?

1 unless somebody else is leaving.

Just for the record there is no comparison between the guys Wright was sitting behind and the guys Simon was sitting behind.

Panther, I always value your opinion and I agree that the NY talent pool isn't as deep as it once was, but I'm not blown away by adding Wright, and the fact that Earlington is our only metro-area recruit (in our less than stellar recruiting class) is very disappointing given the 2018 names that were being talked about at the start of the season. (And if we don't do well this season, all those 2019 names optimistically being bandied about will similarly take it elsewhere.) And the way the staff mishandled Luther Muhammad's recruitment as well as the failure to land a badly needed big man frustrates the hell out of me. For the record, I'm not anti-Mullin (although I'm not happy with some of what I've heard recently), but it's obvious our staff needs a change and/or the addition of another recruiter to go along with Matt. (Time for a Xanax.)

How did the staff mishandle Muhammad's recruitment?

Lack of a frontcourt addition is really dissapointing, especially after Owens departure. But, I feel confident in next year's roster if we can add Figueroa as the final piece. We should be very tough again defensively and will add some nice scoring pieces with Dixon and LJF. Will obviously be a group effort but I don't see why we can't go dancing next year and possibly rattle some cages.

By telling him he was our primary target but not being able to offer substantial PT because he'd be part of a possible six-man backcourt that included the new additions Dixon and Trimble as well as three returning starters. (At the time, LoVett was still with the team.)

We officially now have a very good team for next season. We can now move on to bitching about the difference between very good and great with regard to big man.
