Guys on Matt’s Radar

agree at the end of next yr which is yr 4 and no results change needs to happen I am 100% with staff until the end of next yr and patience from many has been exhausted

Matt's recruiting strategy is very similar to Will Ferrell's dating strategy in Wedding Crashers. Will went to funerals to pick up sad women. Matt picks up kids that are sad about their current situation.
So we have an in-home with three of the top 2019 recruits, but we are not recruiting? We bring in 7 new players in 2 years, and we are not recruiting?
Who said we wasn't recruiting? It was said (and known by a few) that only one is beating the bushes, one sparingly recruits, while the other two don't recruit. No need to fabricate to make a point.

Frankly, we probably have the best chance with Gaffney; a moderate chance at Lewis; and likely no chance with Antoine. But, you can't win it, unless you're in it. So, whether it's minute or great, there's a chance.

An associate head coach needs to recruit. Mullin has to add a recruiter or recruit more....and demand more from Mitch. No excuse for laziness, especially when coupled w inexperience.

So what you are saying is that Mitch has not been producing or doing his job to the utmost. That is them Mullins fault and it amounts to stealing.Would love to hear exactly what his duties are? We are making assumptions that can not be prooved from other than the win loss record of the team

He is not doing his job on that front. Can’t speak about player development. But, IMO, I do not think he is an XO guru. I think the staff make up is flawed and need to add another piece.

Thank you RS and many agree about the staff, recruiting and need to improve these two damn, frustrating areas - why CM - a winner his entire basketball ball career - would not take steps to augment these areas is baffling.
Perhaps there is a poster “ in the know” who can share what CM’s true intentions are as to staff and recruiting.

You do change, I'll be done.
Sick of nothing in the last 16 years, we'll lose 2 or 3 transfers and replace them with 2/3 sit-out transfers?

Nah, it isn't acceptable to me. Just the same crap every year, and I am beginning to get really sick of it.

Guess some schools are blessed with greatness like Villanova 2 championships in 3 years.
And others are cursed?
So we have an in-home with three of the top 2019 recruits, but we are not recruiting? We bring in 7 new players in 2 years, and we are not recruiting? You may not like transfers or the Trimble/McRoberts/ Williams type but realistically, what exactly do we have to sell about SJU? The Garden, the beautiful campus and facilities, our legacy from the 80’s, the lack of stability since the 80’s? The transfers under Mullin certainly don’t help but at least they are within the natural flow of the way college basketball is operating nowadays, not out of the norm, if you will. I am not an alumni and I get this may be harsh and rude to those who went to SJU and are rightfully proud of that but SJU is basically still a commuter school with limited facilities and a campus that cannot compare to many we recruit against. We ARE NOT a realistic destination right now, maybe never, for the type of players many on here pipe dream about. You guys want to play the Rohrressen type card, fine but then don’t bitch when the NCAA comes knocking because they will. The publicity they get out of a NY media driven, non Power 5 conference sanction is a gold mine to them or didn’t the Keita “incident” register with anyone? Look at Nova with Wright, look at Uconn with Calhoun, heck, look at Loyola this year. Those admins understood it takes time and stuck through the rough years. That is the only way you know if you have something. If SJU bails on Mullin prematurely with the train wreck he inherited what credible coach do you think will come here? It will just be another gamble hire, another “poke and hope” to borrow a pool disparagement. And yes, I agree that’s what Mullin was and that’s what Lavin and Roberts were. I realize there are two sides to any argument, especially one as subjective and emotional (to SJU fans at least) as this but to me this has to play out at least another 2/3 years before we know the result. Others obviously disagree.
Since you are not an alum, as are many here it seems, let me tell you what irks us alums about the past 25 years of our once proud basketball program.
When you ask "what exactly do we have to sell about SJU? The Garden, the beautiful campus..", the answer is we are affiliated with one the top 6 basketball conferences in America but have operated as if we are in the bottom ten.  The campus has nothing really to do with it as big time ballers come to play with other talented ballers.  That said, while 60% of the student body still commutes since they live in the 5 boroughs naturally, around 40 % are now resident students from outside the city.  Given the size of the undergraduate student body that is not a small number when compared to schools that have successful programs run by successful coaches across the country.

Gonzaga is located in Spokane.  The campus is comparable to St. John's.  Do you really think that Spokane is an easier sell than the Garden and New York City?  Do you think Providence is an easier sell as a location than NYC?
Have you been to Waco or Lubbock, Texas?  Only two things come from those shit holes. ......steers and que....s.
Why have great players  and a few alums here, been attracted to Syracuse? The great winter weather and night life?  Even Villanova with a beautiful campus off the Main Line is 12 miles outside of Philly and is a bit isolated.
Storrs? Sure, players go there for the farm country atmosphere because they all come from Nebraska.

It all comes down to having a coach with credibility and a record of accomplishment.  Hurley transformed URI in three years.  The coach at Texas Tech did it in less time.  Calipari did it in Amherst, Memphis and Lexington.  Bob McKillop did it in quaint Davidson.  The list goes on with schools located in Podunk that run successful programs.
Players DO NOT go to those schools for the scenery.

Today players go to Podunk to prepare for professional basketball careers across the globe.  Players know they don't have to be in the NBA to enjoy 10 years of paid basketball.  They will gravitate to the program run by a coaching staff that will help get them where they want to go.

That was the wishful thinking surrounding the strange hire of an entire staff with next to zero experience to sell.  While I and many here were not fans of the hire we saw the possibility of success with the hiring of Matt Abdelmassih and Slice. One was going to specialize in transfers while the other could sell ice in winter.  That recruiting dynamic duo imploded.  To this day it is a mystery with a lot of opinions.  The rapid departure of players this staff recruited has added to the mystery and instability.  So, while we have the greatest city in the world to sell, a beautiful modern campus  (compared to when many of us attended), Madison Square Garden, a legendary history (why some of you non alums are fans and mods), a premier basketball conference,  we have eroded our credibility with bad hiring decisions.  It's as simple as that.  For better or worse we now have Chris Mullin and we are hoping and waiting that he finally gets it.  That he sees what changes need to be made. That he sees more effort needs to be expended.  We took him at his word that things were going to be different.  We are still waiting.
So are many of the recruits that we started to recruit 3 years ago.  They my friend look at the record and not the marginal year to year improvements we debate here every single day.

This is how one alum feels.

Totally nailed it 72! Your best post EVA! B) (Unfortunately you probably will never be able to top it so may as well just drop the mike and ride off into the sunset). :)

Do we have a shot? Saw Trey is visiting Maryland ‘unofficially’ this weekend. Obviously the big guy that swayed MD from Tariq.
