Gonzaga

How did you all feel about Stewarts extended amount of minutes? He came in and hit a 3, but I didn't really hear from him for the rest of the game. I was surprised he played that much, but it goes to show Lav is so desperate for shooters.

You know you want to just forget about this loss and move on but it is hard because you know now the zone is something we will see not only next Saturday, but for the whole year if we continue to struggle.

A win against cuse would do wonders for this team. First of all it is doable because this is one of the more weak Syracuse teams I think I have seen. Don't have much depth down low much like us. Secondly, beating them would put the confidence level of this team on another level. Harrison has taken losses to Syracuse since he was a freshmen, and a win at their place I feel like would really get the team juiced and ready for conference play. I think we are in a good position going into Saturday. Put Dom in the middle of that zone like you did tonight, lock down Cooney like we were able to do last year, and I think we can another resume booster.

Just think, if we can get into conference play with wins over Minnesota, st Mary's, and Syracuse, with a close loss to Gonzaga, and wins over every cupcake, that's best case scenario and probably puts us in a position where 9-10 conference wins should do it.

Don't have much depth down low much like us? I wouldn't mind having Christmas and McCullogh.

Yea. That's it. Obekpa can body Christmas and McCullough is good but he's not a huge matchup issue for us. Dom could cover him and so could obekpa if he had to. Rakeem isn't exactly an offensive machine.

I came away from this tournament feeling very good about this year. I have been waiting for three years to see some penetration to the basket and less passing the ball around the perimeter and finally it happened.
Jorden,Harrison and Pointer all drove to the basket. Turnovers will increase with this style of play but the pros will outweigh the negatives.
I was wrong in thinking that Pointer's play wouldn't improve this year. He looked great.
I was also wrong in thinking the league would take a step back this year.
There is a lot to feel good about.

On another note, we are currently 10th in the nation in rebounding. That is astonishing considering our lack of height.

Probably, but we came up short on last two plays down three. Our execution at critical times is poor. Rather than dwell on calls we disagree with, we may be better served by examining our own play and helter skelter offense.

I agree, not dwelling on it just didn't think it wasn't a foul. I was 10 feet away and he barely touched him.

Jordan shot 5-10 in the 1st half and announcers were raving that he was the best guard they had seen this season. He followed that up with a 1-6 second half.

Harrison continues to hit the glass, 6 rebounds this time, but a 4-16 effort from the field hurts us.

Considering the height of Gonzaga's front line, we held our own off the boards, yet Karnowski and Sabonis combined for 11-14 from the field.

It was a really nice effort and our guys didn't back down. Lack of size this season won't be our undoing as much as the inability to consistently knock down shots. I think we are improved but small teams cannot survive with sometimes questionable shot selection and inability to knock down good looks.

All in all a good effort against a top flight team. There will be nights where we play well AND shoot well and are able to beat top teams. However, it is very hard to beat any team, no less a top 10 team, with a three guard offense, when your three guards take 48 of your team's 60 shots, and only make 18

Agreed. I'd also feel a lot better about our 3 guard offense if one of them was a true point guard/floor general. For as much talent as Jordan has, he's still more of a 2 IMO.

Good point Monte. I have pushed Branch for that role, but he continues to make bonehead plays like that behind the back pass v Minny from the corner. I'm still waiting for him to mature and orchestrate, not contribute to the chaos. Disappointed, but hope he gets it soon.

Attendance- 5545 Pathetic!

How about disgraceful!

Top ten team in MSG on a Friday night of a Holiday weekend.

We have the worst fan support in the country. The worst.

What exactly has this group done to deserve significant attention in the biggest city in the world with 2 professional team in each sport?

Are you really saying we support this team only when we are a winning program? I have been a fan since the championship game between us and the Clyde Lovellet Kansas Jayhawks. I suffered through the depressing years when Mulzoff was still coach. And I will continue to support the Redmen whether we win or lose.
My freshman year was Mulzoff's third and final year and at one point we were 17-2 and ranked 9th in the country. Ended up like 21-5 and played a first round game against Penn at The college of William and Mary which we lost by one point when Frank Alagia our 5'9 freshman point guard tried to be a hero and drove the lane in final seconds and had his shot blocked. Better options would have been Billy Schaeffer who averaged 24.7 pts per game that year still an SJU record, or Ed Searcy, or Mel Utley, or Kevin Cleuss, or Beaver Smith. Penn had two good bigs and they swallowed little Frankie up.That year was anything but depressing.

It was clearly an offensive foul and if it'd gone the other way you'd be crying about it.

No doubt a bit of an acting job, but as soon as D'lo extends the arm it's an offensive. Rarely does that go uncalled, in any game situation.

It was probably a slight offensive foul, but it was a TOTAL flop. The bottom line is you don't make that call 40 feet from the basket. Dee's arm wasn't really extended that much at all and he was doing it all night (and for four years now). The ref took away one team's chance to win. If he let's it go...maybe Harrison finishes the layup and we are still down one unless he is fouled and makes a fantastic +1--in which case Gonzaga has the ball and time to win the game.

The three point line is 20 feet from the basket.

Think the NCAA has to review and subject all of its refs to refresher courses Should have to complete so many hours in the class room every 2 yrs

Mulzoff got us into the post season every year.

We all support the Redmen. It's a matter of degree.

Granted that extending the arm and creating space is technically an offensive foul and we would be villifying the ref had this gone against us..However, this was not the 1st time it occurred during the game as the Zag's guards routinely did it and there was a no more egregious non-call than Wiltjer's fend off of Greene's attempt to rebound

3 year record: 56-27 a .675 winning %.

He coached: Mel Davis, Billy Schaeffer, Tony Prince, Richie Lyons, Bill Phillips, and Greg Cluess, to name a few.

That said, these guys were recruited by Coach Carnesecca.

Frank Mulzoff, a captain on the team that went to The National Championship game in 1952, recruited Frankie Alagia and Beaver Smith which was a huge coup for us.

One NCAA appearance ( a lot fewer teams made the tournament than today). Lost to Penn, if memory serves.

Won (4 games in those years) The Holiday Festival in 1972 vs. South Carolina.

Believe Billy Schaeffer was the MVP.

Made the NIT, Billy's junior year (1972) and lost in the semi's. Maryland won the NIT with Tom McMillan, Len Elmore (Power Memorial). For our younger posters, Maryland was a top 5 team.

It was a totally different world than today. Needed to win your conference to go to The NCAA's and Maryland lost an epic game to UNC. The rules were changed the following year.

Remember the game well, as it was on TV. Depressing, watching Penn go into the four corners
delay which was popular at the time via North Carolina and Dean Smith.
The shot clock came a little later. Can't kill Mulzoff, the team won every year. Looie went on his sabbatical and would have stayed with the Nets, I believe, if he could still have coached Rick Barry, who a judge decided had to go back to the Warriors.
