Gonzaga

It was clearly an offensive foul and if it'd gone the other way you'd be crying about it.

No doubt a bit of an acting job, but as soon as D'lo extends the arm it's an offensive. Rarely does that go uncalled, in any game situation.

It was probably a slight offensive foul, but it was a TOTAL flop. The bottom line is you don't make that call 40 feet from the basket. Dee's arm wasn't really extended that much at all and he was doing it all night (and for four years now). The ref took away one team's chance to win. If he let's it go...maybe Harrison finishes the layup and we are still down one unless he is fouled and makes a fantastic +1--in which case Gonzaga has the ball and time to win the game.

Harrison was guilty of an offensive foul. It was obvious. But the refs blew the earlier play when jorDan drove the basket and was hit in the arm. They called a turnover instead of a foul which was very obvious to all except some refs who I feel were bias

Lavin needs to get on these refs like coach k and pitino do. He is too complacent

I recall a few Technicals that coach received in the past (last year?) and him taking a beaten on here that he should have known better.

From my perspective, he seems to get on the refs pretty good, he just doesn't go Pitino or Coach K because he isn't those coaches and he would get T'd up, as he has in the past. Those guys, Boeheim included, can do and say whatever they want and often intimidate the refs.

You want to talk intimidating, How about big John Thompson. He got away with complaining right from the beginning of the game.

Attendance- 5545 Pathetic!

How about disgraceful!

Top ten team in MSG on a Friday night of a Holiday weekend.

We have the worst fan support in the country. The worst.

What exactly has this group done to deserve significant attention in the biggest city in the world with 2 professional team in each sport?

Are you really saying we support this team only when we are a winning program? I have been a fan since the championship game between us and the Clyde Lovellet Kansas Jayhawks. I suffered through the depressing years when Mulzoff was still coach. And I will continue to support the Redmen whether we win or lose.
My freshman year was Mulzoff's third and final year and at one point we were 17-2 and ranked 9th in the country. Ended up like 21-5 and played a first round game against Penn at The college of William and Mary which we lost by one point when Frank Alagia our 5'9 freshman point guard tried to be a hero and drove the lane in final seconds and had his shot blocked. Better options would have been Billy Schaeffer who averaged 24.7 pts per game that year still an SJU record, or Ed Searcy, or Mel Utley, or Kevin Cleuss, or Beaver Smith. Penn had two good bigs and they swallowed little Frankie up.That year was anything but depressing.

You are right but I'm talking about the year Mulzoff was so upset with the team he left the bench and sat up in the stands. There was plenty of room by the way as Alumni Hall was empty.

Think the NCAA has to review and subject all of its refs to refresher courses Should have to complete so many hours in the class room every 2 yrs

Don't be surprised if you see these refs doing the NCAA Playoffs. Happens every year, unfortunately.

The three point line is 20 feet from the basket.

It happened beyond the NBA three point line which is 23 feet 9 inches. I'll amend my prior statement to: "You don't make that call 27 feet from the basket in that situation."

Would I be pissed if it went against us? Probably not pissed, as I am not one to piss and moan about calls deciding games. It is a very difficult job and one that I'd be happy to never have to do again at any level under any circumstances.

He started his move with his head down and a raised left forearm, and then proceeded to keep his head down and dip his left shoulder in to Bell Jr. Notwithstanding the slow mo replay which makes the infractions seem less flagrant, and putting aside our subjectiveness, this was a complete no-brainer for the refs.

I don't see it that way at all. The shoulder is a different call entirely...if anything that would be a block, as Bell was clearly sliding laterally at the contact and Harrison has every right to that space. I think Bell anticipated more contact than he actually got and flopped just as Harrison changed direction with the dribble behind his back. Bell's eyes are on the official from the moment he flops.

I admit that technically the forearm slightly extended is an offensive foul, but you just don't make that call in that situation. The ref making that call effectively ends the game with less than 20 seconds left...you never do that if you don't absolutely have to.

This is coming off the Jordan no-call when he had his arm chopped and the completely puzzling foul call on Greene when Greene was standing completely still and Witjer pushed off on him clear as days with one arm while jumping up and away from Greene to get an offensive rebound.

I honestly don't think we would have won the game anyway, but it really does suck to have the chance to win taken away by an official. You swallow the whistle there unless something happens that gives one side a blatant advantage and that clearly wasn't it. Bell flopped and there is no place for that in basketball.

But I'm tired of talking about it. We lost because we fell behind by 15 when they wen to a zone. That cannot happen with four guards and a SF in the lineup.

One final comment is that I was very impressed with the rebounding. We do not box out well as a team, but man we sure go up in the air for rebounds as well as anyone....right down the line from Obekpa to Phil Greene. I don't remember a St. John's team since the Postell years where we were as good going up for contested boards. I just wish more guys boxed out like Harrison.

Second to last paragraph says it all.

Per Seth Davis of SI:

• I was very impressed with St. Johns’ near-comeback over Gonzaga in the NIT final at Madison Square Garden. The Johnnies fell short to a great team, but they showed some pluck in cutting a 15-point deficit to three with a minute left. Too bad there were so many fans there dressed as empty seats. Official attendance: 5,548.

It's sad. Every coach and analyst thinks we are good (votes in two polls), but our fans act like the sky is falling. Even if we completely fail this season, it will be the second best team we've had in over a decade. We can't even enjoy that.

If I understand you correctly, you're saying that even if we completely fail this year(IE no NCAA tourny) , that we should enjoy it because it may be the 2nd best year we've had in the last decade plus? If so, you've really set the bar pretty damn low.

The program set the bar pretty damn low....not Marillac.
Marillac cannot predict the future and will enjoy supporting a 5-1 team with votes in two polls whereas you and the majority of SJU fans prefer to try to predict the future and lose hope/whine about how bad the team is.
This is an exciting team full of highly ranked recruits coming of a 20-win season. This not the year to b*tch and moan. Through six games, our weakest position/starter has been one of the best performers. There are plenty of reasons to be optimistic. You will realize this Saturday.

Didn't Marillac attempt to predict the future with Balamou? Touting him as being an impact player this year? In any event I consider myself a cautiously optimist fan, as opposed a cockeyedly optimist fan, as you are. In fact I just got off the phone with a fellow Redmen fan and said I believe we have a decent chance of making the tourny. So far this team has beaten the teams they were supposed to, and lost to the team they should have. The real test of this team is yet to come.

So is Davis saying if the attendance was doubled SJU would have won? (Yes, that is sarcasm). The attendance thing is lame. We are a bruised fan base. Excuse us for avoiding another kick in the nuts.

Example, I am an Islander fan. Home games were half empty because the team has been run so poorly for so long. Now, a little investment in upgrading talent, which leads to winning, and what do you know, attendance is way up.

No different with SJU.

No more moral victories. I don't care how much "pluck" we showed. Niagara showed the same "pluck" against us, big deal. We were 6 pt dogs at home and lost by 7. We dug a whole, scrambled back, and came up short. Nice effort, but same ole story. If we want to make the tourny, we had better start winning some of these home games against favorites.

Our fans have watched the team play, most coaches and analysts have not. Truthfully.
This is absolutely the year to complain, because the program is falling apart before our eyes.
We have a roster of walk-on level talent for next year, and virtually zero shot with any impact recruits.
Our most exciting player was benched yesterday because he's too selfish.
We have no bench or depth in the frontcourt because our coach took last year's recruiting season off to go sweatpants shopping, and the recruits he did bring in are not qualified. - leaving us with no backup center.
And our offensive sets look like the guys just showed up for a pick up game and made things up on the fly. When in reality this is a team of juniors and seniors who should are more experienced than any team they'll face this season.
I don't expect a well-oiled machine, but I expect more than what they've shown so far.
I'm glad we haven't lost to any of the cupcakes so far, but we've looked pretty poorly in many of these games.

Bipolar post. Be balanced. Fans here were ecstatic after the Minnesota game, less than ecstatic after the Gonzaga game, and miserable after we beat Niagara but played poorly. A season ticket should come with a prescription for Prozac. I don't care to be forward looking because I don't hire the coach, don't recruit the players, can't control who declares. I enjoy what's in front of me on that given night. To paraphrase St. Francis, "God grant us the serenity to enjoy the games we win, accept the games we should lose, and wisdom to know the difference.
