I figured that but they were wrong to do it
Here is the rule:

The shot clock will reset to 20 seconds, regardless of the time it displays, when an unsuccessful field-goal or free-throw attempt hits the ring or flange and the ball is: (1) first controlled by the shooting team in their frontcourt or (2) play is stopped before either team gains control of the ball

Idk how the rules are written but I do know in college basketball all season any possession that starts in the frontcourt will start with a 20 second shot clock. When we've forced dead ball turnovers off of inbounds passes when pressing (like deflecting it off the opponent's leg out of bounds) the shot clock starts at 20

But there was no shot attempt
I guess since it was the opening tap, it was considered a stoppage before either team had possession.

When I watched it live I was confused too. Until looking up the rule when the shot clock resets to 20 seconds.

The rule you quoted gives two outcomes after a missed FG or FT so again there were neither of those scenarios.

Also it wasnt a resetting of the shot clock as neither team ever possessed the ball

But both one and two come into play off a missed shot. This was the opening tip off and the shot clock isn’t set until a team possesses the ball so it would be the initial possession and you get 30 seconds to take a shot.

Maybe the refs just set the shot clock to 20 because neither team had control of the ball.

Doesn’t matter. Whoever is awarded the ball and starts a possession gets 30 seconds. My theory of what may have happened is shot clock operator pushed wrong button and when the buzzer went off no one realized they only got 20 seconds. My friend and I said WTH right away.

Any possession that starts in the frontcourt is a 20 second shot clock. It's been happening all season
