Georgetown game

Got back from the game about a half-hour ago and I am still pumped up. I loved the way our guys played tonight, especially holding off that Georgetown run when they cut the lead to 7. This team matures with every game like this.

Kudos to the students for a terrific turnout on a Sunday night. And I've never been to the Garden where it was rocking like it did tonight!

And it was great to meet two fellow .comers. Sat in the same row as Russell and met Paultzman on the train ride home. Great meeting you both and celebrating with you both!

Paultz sits in the row in front of me. Great guy Paultz is.

AWESOME job by the student section tonight. The crowd in general was great but the kids really showed up tonight. Lets make this an advantage the rest of the season. Hell I never go to 9pm games but I'm not missing this one

The only problem i had with this game.....why can't we win with a little class? I get it, this was a huge win, we are playing really well, and these are still kids out there. But after the Obekpa block, why can't he just run down the court instead of talking sh*t to the other player. The Jordan tomahawk....it was a great dunk and all, but why the need to pound your chest afterwards? I am all about getting excited, but there is a difference between playing with emotion and making yourself look like a punk.

And at the end of the day, even though we are playing our best ball right now, we still have a lot of work to do. If the tournament were to start tomorrow, we would be on the outside looking in.

You must've missed the last Georgetown game, they kept their starters in the entire time and pressed us all the way until the end. We also haven't played Georgetown close since the hardy year. They HAD IT COMING. I'd honestly agree with you if we were playing anyone else, Georgetown and Syracuse I accept that behavior against, no one else

You either have class or you don't; you can't pick and choose.

Not true, if you're playing a dirty team that has been in sportsmanlike in the past and dirty during the game, there's nothing wrong with throwing down a couple of highlight reel dunks at the end of the game. This is a group of kids that has taken five games worth of beat downs from the hoyas, and we are gonna call our guys classless for throwing down two dunks??

I didn't comment at all at what happened in this game or any other. I just don't think you pick and choose when to do the right thing nd then try to justify actions you think are less than classy or acceptable. Obviously you think they were ("if we were playing anyone else, Georgetown and Syracuse I accept that behavior against, no one else"). Just my opinion. As for the game, if JTIII took out his starters we should have; he didn't, so keep playing ball. I don't like trash talking but the game has changed and unwritten rules of sportsmanship just aren't part of the game anymore so to me the way we played to close out the game was nothing to even comment on.
I'm not commenting on your post but my general opinion is when Gtwon all bets are off and whatever happens happens. it was quite obvious that from players quotes b4 game they don't like them and the ink they are dirty. SO ONLY 1 OPTION. Back up the talk and slap them down. our guys handled themselves well tonight. tuesday I expect a more respectful game

Back from the game, and I have two observations to offer...

1) I have never seen a line of St. John's fans waiting to get into a bar like I did at stout after the game tonight. That was incredible. With Monday off I think every one was Ina mood to celebrate, great atmosphere.

2) if you want good sportsmanship, play intramurals. If you don't want to get scored on, then play better defense. I said the same thing about spurrier at Florida ... are they supposed to stop trying to score? Is a boxer with a big lead in the 11th round expected to not try to land a knock-out? No, it's entirely their prerogative to keep playing hard.
It's just nice to be on the other end of a beat-down for a change. Showboating is a lot of fun when it's your guys playing for the cameras! Also, Georgetown threw elbows all game long, they deserved to get punked at the end.

Play til the end. They were pressing so we were dunking. In addition, big blowouts of teams make a statement to the tourney selection committee. I have no problem with us dunking on them late. The last game, they ran it up on us. Time for us to have fun and off to the races if they want to keep trapping. Besides, a little bit of bad blood is great for the rivalries we desperately need to stoke. It's good for the game.

Jeez, I understand exuberance after a win, but to declare that good sportsmanship not be a part of how this or any team carries itself, is just a repugnant comment. Nothing justifies bad behavior. Let's remember that part of the reason we are knocking down doors with an under control give-it-all junior (Harrison), is that Lavin wouldn't tolerate his bad manners and bad sportsmanship last season. I'm hoping that your post was made when you had a little too much alcohol in you.

That being said, there is nothing in our finish that approaches bad sportsmanship. Georgetown, to their credit, is coached never to toss in the towel. Thompson, who I don't like, knows that a 15 point game with 3 minutes to go is just 5 possessions. Even when that possibility evaporated at the two minute mark, his guys are as intense as if it were a 4 point game. Throw in some very physical play by G'Town, and I have no problem with Obekpa's response to blocking a shot, or Jordan letting loose after a spectacular exclamation point dunk.

You are likely much too young to remember, but one of the best parts of Villanova's NCAA championship over Georgetown was that as the clock wore down, Georgetown self destructed into dirty play, the most obvious being a Hoya trying to simultaneously pull a over player down while kneeing him in the groin. To Nova's credit, they kept their cool, which instead of a brawl, just differentiated a classy program from one the tolerated thug behavior.

On the topic of bad behavior, I sat in front of two 20-something knuckleheads and spent the entire second half listening to their loud, stupid rants. They were kid of rooting for SJU, for seated 3 seats apart with their poor girlfriends between them, loudly rooted for us to miss shots (one had an over-under bet), loudly speculated that the kid on the dance team pretends he is gay to be around girls, and continued to loudly proclaim that we should start to run the clock down with 19 minutes to go in the second half. If they weren't so clearly a couple of idiots, I would have said something, but hey, if I want good sportsmanship, I should go to intramural games.

Playing hard and In your face defense has been Georgetowns trademark for over 30 yrs. it started with the old man when he coached, and will continue with JT 3. I have no problem with it! I believe it was GTown who defined the BE persona as a tough very physical league.

Not a matter of picking and choosing. If G'Town refused to let up the last time we played, it probably figured in Lavin's decision to keep starters in and give Thompson a dose of his own medicine. For our part, Georgetown didn't give up until the very last possession, and their sloppiness led to a couple of breakaways on our part. Why let up, and win by only 6 or 7 points, which could influence to NCAA committee if we are one of three or four Big east teams tied for third at 10-8. Georgetown played hard the entire game and so did we. I have no problem with how we finished.

Well again, you completely missed my point and filled in your own blanks. I was not commenting at all on the way we closed the game but rather the idea that "well, I can be an ass..le here because he was an ass..le there" but "I'll be classy here because he was classy there." My post was based on the premise that you acknowledge that you are acting like an ass..le or being classy in each situation which JW did. Read my answer to his subsequent post, I also had no problem with the way we closed the game; that's not what I was talking about.

Obekpa led the team in assists with 4 and did I hear Pointer scream "Marillac" when he landed his o-board and put it back for 2?

Another ghost exorcized.
we could hear the Marillac scream from Pointer a couple of times up in our section.

Clearly Marillac lit a fire under Pointer :)

2.5 weeks ago I mentioned we were 3 1/2 games out of 3rd place. Now we are only .5 game back!!! Unbelievable turnaround. This one never was in doubt which to me shows how far this team has come.

I thought it was in doubt when the lead was cut to seven
took the easy way out and shut the TV for a while and paced the floors - "My bad" as my son says
great win
fun reading all these posts - thanks for all of them
do you think the Prince of North Philly has shut naysayers about his choice of schools?

I wish they'd replay the game - where I'm at it ended then switched away too soon

It's being replayed at 9am (EST) tomorrow.
what channel ?

it's hard to figure out what you mean by one sentence that says "You either have class or you don't; you can't pick and choose". By responding in that manner, there is an inference that the team conducted itself without class. I do agree with your explanation, but you can't expect people to know what you are thinking when you don't explain yourself.

How was the crowd in terms of attendance and energy? I know we had some major recruits watching at msg.

I'm in Florida and was not able to watch unfortunately.

lower bowl really crowded. upper only a couple of sections. my guess is maybe 10 or 11k

very loud crowd though. you could feel the buzz even before the game started.

I never said that they should stop playing the game. I have no problem with them going for blocks or going for the highlight reel dunk. My only comment is that after you make those kind of plays, why not just leave the comments to yourself and run down the court. I know it is a different game today, I just don't see the need for the trash talking. Winning by 20+ should be all the talking you need.....

Welcome to the new millennium. The days where Walt Frazier would grimace and give a little subdued fist pump after a great play are long over. Our guys are far from even the median. In general, their exhortations were not in anyone's face; Jordan bellowed to no one in particular, Harrison screams to the crowd. I hate trash talking also, but I don't see our guys doing a lot of that - but then again, I'm not on top of the court where you might be and hear those things.
