Former staff debate (from fall visit thread)

Those with real insight into the SJU program since Louie retired can cite serious shortcomings in ALL our subsequent coaches, from Mahoney through Mullin. Certainly the results during those decades speak for themselves. Anderson’s results remain to be seen, and SJU fans certainly have earned the right to have a “show me” skepticism, but the professionalism he and staff have brought is already “up front for everyone to see” evident from real, sincere PR to a commitment level to recruiting expected and required at this level. IMO, only two of those previous coaches brought their A game to SJU, Mahoney and Roberts, and neither of those A games were remotely good enough, each an understandable but poor hire. From FF lobbying for other jobs, etc. to Mullin’s laissez faire coaching “style” everyone else was just “stealing money” in a way.
There is a BIG difference with the Mullin hire then the others. Mullin's status at the school prior to his hire was FAR different than any of the other hires. And that is why his hire was treated far differently. And that is what made is failure and more importantly his lack of work towards potentially succeeding after his initial months on the job that much more disappointing. And made it that much harder to figure out a way to move on without making him look bad.
I understand, but frankly, he made himself look bad. Not succeeding IMO is very forgivable, not working, not so much. I understand the possible familial extenuating circumstances to a degree but if you can't do the job, you have to resign citing those extenuating circumstances.
I totally agree that it was entirely on him and that is what made it more disappointing. I just want to indicate that when you compare his hire to others they are not all made equal. Because of his background and what he said at his introductory press conference the Mullin hire was seen as the end to all those faults that followed the previous hires. He was also going to be given access to resources (see hiring of Slice) that others would not be given.

It is why ultimately the breakup was not going to be easy. Think about it. Outside of Norm who was going to be given a LONG rope because of the bad situation he inherited, anyone with Mullin's record after 4 years at SJU would be shown the door without much argument. Period. The reason why it almost didn't happen and then ultimately happened the way it did was BECAUSE he is Chris Mullin. Anyone else after 4 years and a 20-52 League record with no major NCAA sanctions or scholarship reductions inherited not to mention a weaker league then the others were hired into would have been shown the door without much discussion.

If Lavin inherited the SAME situatuion and were 20-52 or even a little better with no winning league record, only 1 overall winning record and 1 backdoor NCAA appearance in which they were blown out he would have been fired 24-48 hours after the season with little discussion.

In contrast, there was just a tweeted picture of Mike Anderson with the kids on the track getting ready to run at 5 or 6am this morning. Iron Mike doesn’t play. We will certainly be in shape and have a great work ethic if nothing else.

Last time was early Lavin. Chiles was the horse, Rico was involved and Lavin was great at building relationships quickly and seemingly always in touch with tons of both top and attainable prospects. Dunlap wasn't, of course, but with Lavin bringing his A game we could get away with leaving Dunlap in the lab to run practices, game plans, etc.
This staff has done more real recruiting in 5 months than Lavin or Mullin and their staffs did in 7-8 years.
Lavin pulled in a top 3 class his first year. Mullin and Co. were also recruiting very aggressively the first few months they were hired (Rawle Alkins, Thon Maker, Heron as a HS Senior). Obviously we know how both regimes turned out. Let's stop trying to create a false narrative and give our current staff time before we start giving them all the accolades in the world. I am excited too but CMA is doing what every other D1 Coach does their first few months on the job.
That's one way to look at it. The other is that CMA and his staff are doing precisely what their track record says they will do. That they are grinding it out every day and utilizing the entire staff to recruit in a coordinated, all hands on deck/team style.

Mullin had two guys on staff with recruiting experience and lost one of them right out of the gate because he couldn't mange the egos of two alpha recruiters. The question with them after 4 months on the job wasn't if they were working hard during the "honeymoon phase" of their tenure (everyone does), but just how long they would keep it up. Rhorssen leaving so quickly answered that question loud and clear, even if people weren't quite willing to listen to that message just yet.

Based on CMA's career arc, management style and achievements you know exactly what you are getting from him on a day to day basis. The question wasn't how hard this staff would work, or how long they would put in that effort. It was whether or not he'd get traction locally, and the results needed to succeed in NY. Something they seem to have already done.

You want to wait 6 months to see if a guy who has had an unflinching work ethic his whole coaching career still has an unflinching work ethic? If you'd been paying attention to our last staff ,and to this new one, you'd know that it won't be news if in 6 months CMA and this staff are still working their asses off...it will be news if they aren't.

To recap:

We fired a staff that had no resume and didn't do much of anything, let alone recruiting.
We hired a new HC with an impeccable resume, work ethic and history of success on and off the court.
He hired a bunch of good/excellent recruiters.
They are out doing what they do and having some immediate success...
And you want to wait to see if they still have the same work ethic and effort in 6 months?

Past performance may not be indicative of future results in the stock market, but it definitely is when assessing a persons prospective job performance. CMA will ultimately be judged by his ability to land enough quality recruits to win games. That is something that will be proven out over time. Whether or not he's going to put in the long term effort needed to get those recruits and win those games really isn't debatable. There's nothing in his career that indicates he's suddenly going to stop doing what he's always done from an effort standpoint. Nothing. So until you have evidence that is the case, I think most of us are going o give him the benefit of the doubt on that front, even if you aren't. Quite frankly, he's earned that much.
I never said he's going to suddenly stop doing anything. I never said I want to wait 6 months to see if this effort continues because I believe it will. Please don't put words in my mouth. My point was that CMA is doing exactly what Lavin and Mullin we're at this point (hard recruiting first few months in) when they were both respectively hired. That was all.

Sure, you didn't say it directly. You just implied it.

Sure sounds like you are suggesting that the last two staffs worked hard out of the gate before coasting and that its a "false narrative" to suggest CMA is doing anything different because he and his staff could end up doing the same thing Mullin and Lavin did, which is to stop working hard after a short period of time.

The false narrative here is comparing Mullin and his staff to CMA and his staff as if they are on equal footing in any way. They couldn't be more different.

CMA might fail here. Heck, everyone else has. But its NOT going to be from lack of effort as it was with his most recent predecessors. That in and of itself is extremely refreshing for a fanbase used to the opposite from its program. The is ZERO reason to try to tamp down the enthusiasm of our fans when it comes to respecting that work ethic. None. Least of all by suggesting that he's only doing what every other D1 coach does at the beginning of a new gig.

I mean no offense but you're overthinking and making to many assumptions based on a simple statement I made that is a fact. I'm not trying to negatively associate CMA with our previous 2 staffs. If you want to misinterpret my statement then that's your prerogative. The false narrative is that CMA has done more "recruiting" in 6 months than Laving or Mullin ever did their whole time here. That's simply not true. As I've stated already, I think CMA and Co. will continue this effort.

Well actually it IS true. Lavin had a ton of connections and didn’t hit the trail nearly as hard as this staff has. His first class was a lot of hype and a lot of connections to get it rolling. Those recruits weren’t landed with elbow grease, as much as they were ready to be brought aboard for the most part. It’s not a knock. It’s just a bit of the Penny Hardaway effect ala Hollywood Steve. Great class for sure. It was just he and Chiles as well. I don’t know what the other guys did. Mullin never busted his ass recruiting and all reports were that he had a disdain for it, so he had Matt do all of it.

None of our prior staffs have gone out with 4 guys hitting everything like this staff is doing.

You make valid points. In my opinion, recruiting should be graded mainly on the talent landed. Effort is obviously extremely important but sometimes it won't be rewarded. If we're judging based on "effort" then this staff is absolutely smoking the previous ones. I am hopeful the increased effort translates into tangible results.

Every thread dedicated to SJU bball always turns into Mullin/Lavin bashing. Let it go guys. Focus on today and the future. Can't change the past. Hard working staff for sure. Look forward to seeing the product.

Everything I've seen so far indicates a very positive start. We now have an AD who is actively involved in the SJU and all of its sports programs. His tweets and sharing information are a vast improvement from the dark ages. He now has hired a coach with experience who has hit the ground running. What I am looking forward to seeing is CMA's game management--his use of more that 6 players where our players are spent with 5 minutes to go; his ability to conduct time out huddles that don't look like fire drills where coaches are like the scene in the old movie Marty (what do you want to do now Chris; I don't know what do you want to do now Mitch; I don't know what about you Greg....). I look at the glass being half full and can't wait for 10/30 to see them in action.

Fair point to a degree. Right up to "that's simply just not true."

I'll agree that Lavin's crew hit the ground running and were all out recruiting hard from day one. Things really didn't take a negative turn in that regard until he got sick.

Mullin is a different animal. Yes, the first 6 months or so were their best work, but they didn't cover nearly as much ground recruiting at any point in their tenure as this staff has to date. How could they? They had a HC who didn't recruit much and two recruiters on staff that first year. This staff has 4 recruiters working full time.

You can make the argument that CMA's crew out worked Lavin's crew is a "false narrative". Not sure I agree completely, but I concede that its a fair point and with out more information there's no way to prove it. Lavin had a good staff.

But you simply can't make that same argument about Mullin's staff. Mullin hardly recruited and he had two guys on his staff that ever did. At no point in their tenure did that staff ever have the manpower, coordinated effort and focus on recruiting that this staff has shown to date. To say that such a statement is a "false narrative" simply is not true.

Does anyone have an educated guess as to how much the school paid Mullin and his four assistants, which includes Rohrssen, over the four years they were employed?
Also, how much was Mullin's buyout?

More than $15 million would be my guess for everyone.

For whatever it is worth. Go to pick up my son tonight from practice and FDU and New Hampshire are there watching. There is one very good player on my sons team. My sons coach who played at West Virginia ( 84-87 ) walks out with the coach from FDU who is a former Montrealer, Maurice Joseph , who until March was the head coach at George Washington University. He says to Maurice you remember Aubie and Maurice recognizes me. We chat for a minute or two and then he says « Mike Anderson and staff are going to get it done at ST. John’s, those guys are working like crazy ». As I started off this post by saying take it for what it is worth as that is just one mans opinion , but that man is really in the know and has zero special affinity for SJU.

Redmannorth, good stuff, thanks for sharing I have heard similar from several people who are active in recruiting circles. For me, it it worth a lot.

You know who else never had a losing record(in 13 seasons) when he arrived here with a reputation as a stand up guy, a hard worker and a winner? Mike Jarvis, that's who. I like what I see so far, but I liked what I saw with every single coach(since Louie) when they first arrived, other than Norm. I believed in every single coach, except Norm.. In the words of Pete Townshend, I 'won't get fooled again'.

Haha Mikey is gonna have the most fit team in the NCAA.
I mean, if we're gonna do 40minutes of hell, none stop ball pressure, the young men better be in tip top shape.

The one thing I want at the end of the season is for every coach in the B.E to say is:
Damn that Mike Anderson is a real pain in the ass with his 40 minutes of hell.

Well he learned that style from the best at running that style, "Nolan Richardson."
Wreck havoc on everyone coach.

Glass half full or half empty, to each their own; your position is certainly understandable; but your point is what?
Maybe there should be a moratorium on positive posts about Anderson until, well, when? What is enough time to pass before we comment on what we see or hear just because it happens to be positive and we’ve (you’ve) been fooled before? We all have all been burned by people who seemed one thing and turn out to be another, that’s life, it is up to each to decide whether those experiences jade one to all people as they move forward.
I agree completely that Anderson needs to prove himself over time at SJU, any person in any new job has to do that before you can judge a successful hire or not. However, dealing with each situation as unique with a clean slate and commenting on what you see and hear seems reasonable; especially on a medium whose sole purpose is discussion.

Where did I even imply that commenting on what you see and hear is unreasonable? Comment away! Most of what happens on this site(and other sports sites) is bar room banter anyway, with the exception of information provided by a handful of posters with first or (reliable) second hand knowledge of what’s going on with the program. As for my post/point, I wouldn’t overanalyze it. It was just comment. Same as I would make if I was in a bar room conversation about the new staff.
