Fire Lavin!

I have seen alot of discussion on the board surrounding realistic expectations for St. John's Basketball.

My expectation is to make the NCAA tournament at a rate of roughly half our seasons and to make an occassional deep run. I have come to the conclusion that the expectations you have for your coach, must match expectations for performance. In this case, I beleive a coach that can both recruit and coach is necessary to acheive our performance standards (or wishes).

Is this a joke?
5 guys who will never step foot on campus as students.

Lavin will never again have as much talent as he had this season. You guys must think him a magician, able to get whatever he wants for no reason other than sheer charisma. The past recruits came here because they bought the hyped expectations of something great being built, of St. Johns "coming back". Now, after having the most talent in the league and going nowhere, no recruit is going to buy it. Writing is on the wall, some of you Lavin lovers just cant yet see past your man crush.

So to be certain, let's get this straight. With his first recruiting class not reaching senior season yet, with one in the NBA, one just declared, and one first team all big east, another led the nation in shots blocked as a freshman, and another almost certain to declare for the NBA before his senior year, you are declaring that Lavin will never again recruit like this? You must be a riot at your place of employment with such an optimistic outlook.

Yes, Beast. The guy in the NBA can't help us. The one, Sampson, who declared helped us to a 5th place finish, NIT and blow out loss. The All BE player scored a lot of points, on a lot of attempts and disappeared in as many games as he starred in.. No doubt, without him, we'd be closer to 8th place.. And, forgot to mention , had the BE PRE-SEASON ROY and coached him to finishing 2nd to Garrett, who doesn't have Jordan's skills. JORDAN missed out because you didn't let him play from the opening whistle,in all situations and mismanaged his development, until too late in the season.

I'm trying to see your point, BEAST but, the way you put it, doesn't add up.. We're still way below expectations, not only from fans here but, virtually all the BB PUNDITS on TV or the written media.. And, Lavin is showing more skill as shoveling BS than any of us have in shoveling snow, this winter.

I like your posts, BEAST and you're always a classy guy posting here but, let's agree to disagree on this one. I'm a long view investor too but, long view in Coaching Careers is a lot like buying all the mortgage backed securities you can right now because all the Banks are doing it again..

Now this is interesting. Lavin on the radar for the UNLV position:

"A slew of high profile candidates have already emerged should Rice leave: Jay Wright from Villanova, Steve Lavin from St. John’s, Josh Pastner from Memphis, former UCLA coach Ben Howland, former UNLV and SDSU assistant Marvin Menzies from New Mexico State, former Runnin’ Rebels star Reggie Theus from Cal State Northridge."

Are all the Rice's mentioned related to MIKE Rice. And, why isn't he a candidate for a dysfunctional program? Lavin to UNLV? i would think that would fit STEVE'S PERSONA WELL. And, it's close to LA, FOR HIS SPOUSE.

Getting his name out there for SJU contract extension discussions leverage or just normal reporter BS of throwing names on a wall?

Would be a lateral move for Pastner, a step down for Wright and I dont think they are dumb enough to go for Lavin. Howland seems like the smart move for them.

Oh, PLEASE, let him go. I cannot express how happy I would be to get rid of Lavin.

That would be my guess.

I don't think he has any leverage when the on the court results + recruiting woes speak for themselves.

After reading the first name on this list, why even post it. Definitely BS because Jay Wright would never leave Villanova for another college job. He has an opportunity to leave a legacy there and going to UNLV would not do anything for him. It is amazing that people will post anything without even considering the logic of it.
While i am disappointed with the season we just had, I have a hard time with posters using any and everything to strike out at Lavin. Saying he is using this as a bargaining chip with St Johns without even knowing the facts is totally nonsensical !!!!!

An earlier post said slapping at Lavin, out of NIT in the first round, finished 5th in the Big East. That is disingenuous. St. John's finished tied for 3rd in the Big East. They were seeded 5th for the Big East Tournament.

Don’t fire Lavin, he’s been a great representative of our University and is working hard to get us back to where we want to be.

Coach K took a while to get going at Duke, Calhoun took some time at Uconn, these quick hit wonders, young coaches who gain quick success, sometimes fall back in the school where they had early success, or flame out at a bigger program. McKillop took a long time to get Davidson going, but changing coaches, willy nilly is stupid, IMHO.

Let’s all root hard for a big next year in the Lavin era. Come on men.

Rollie won a National Title at Nova and jetted for UNLV a few years later. I dont think Jay would leave Nova for UNLV, but he was an assistant there in the 1990s (under Rollie) before he got the Hofstra job.

I think Jay will be the one who replaces Rat Face at Duke when he retires.

If UNLV took Lavin off of our hands do we change SJU's slogan to "We Won Big In Vegas"?

This comes from the San Diego Union Tribune ---not the National Enquirer. It is a very large, legitimate media outlet and since San Diego is arch-rivals with UNLV, it makes sense that they would be especially interested in covering this. Doesn't neccesarily mean they are going to be right, but it hardly falls under the category of just throwing out "anything and everything."

I don't know, whether the info is legit or not. But your theory doesn't necessarily mean the info is legit because the San Diego Union Tribune is a legitimate media outlet.

BS is and can be written in papers. So, there are situations where there are holes or one not getting all of the info prior to printing a story when working for a legit media outlet.

BS is and can be written in papers.

I totally agree that BS is written all the time in the papers. But since this particular story came from one of the largest newspapers in the US, not some lone-wolf blogger, I didn't think it was out of line to mention it. They could be dead wrong, I agree, just like ESPN has dropped the ball on this particular story a few times as well.

Maybe those are just names that UNLV is considering. It doesn't mean the coaches are likewise interested. Why is it BS that UNLV would want jay Wright---or Lavin for that matter.
