Fire Lavin!

Masiello was just on tv without a tie. I guess that eliminates him as a possible replacement for Lavin. ;)

That was actually the first time I've ever heard Masiello in an interview and I was actually impressed by him. I didn't expect him to be that polished. I would dump Lavin and hire him tomorrow. He's a Pitino disciple and he actually played on a team that won a National Championship. I think this guy is going to be top notch.

If you are going to tout the guy and dump on Lavin for being silver tongued, why not start with the truth, if you know it, or just honesty - whichever would be appreciated. Masiello is from Westchester, walked on at Kentucky, and as such didn't see the light of day in games. In the Metro, a league with more have nots than haves, he finished second at 15-5, two games behind Iona, and only one ahead of powerhouses Quinnipiac and Canisius. IF not for beating Iona by 3 in the MAAC conference, they would be possibly get an NIT bid, but would not be a lock. We know mid major coaches are not a lock when you take the hop up, yet you would hire him and dump Lavin tomorrow based on an interview? What would you then do if Lavin head to head proved to be a better interview?

No doubt he is up and coming, but you have to be joking that you would dump Lavin, who has steadily recruited upwards in the top 100 players, for a guy who has simply done well at Manhattan?

Let me ask you a single simple question, and I'll presuppose it for you: Lavin started his year 2 roster with just one scholarship player, the esteemed Malik Stith, courtesy of Norm Roberts I-don't-give-a-frick-about-tomorrow-cause-I'm-saving-my-ass-today recruiting strategy. Scrambling to fill a roster, he gambled on Nurideen Lindsay, and lost, but grabbed a sugar coated plum Mo Harkless. Cancer aside, he coached last year and this year with his own guys, right? Ok, here's the question, are you still reading? It's an SAT question, so follow along.

Given that this team won 20+ games, went 10-8 in conference, and spent the last few minutes of a ton of very close games dislodging chunks of apples from their throats (did you notice the Heimlich maneuver during timeouts?), where do you think , wait, since you know, where do you KNOW this SJU team would finish if they had an NBA player on their roster, you know someone who could dominate and lead them, say, a Mo Harkless?

Come on, you can do it, you can do it? Don't worry, if you get it wrong, you will still probably get admitted to the 377th best school in the US.

For you and your fire Lavin buddies, all of whom I respect as long as they aren't asses on here, I will answer for you if you didn't do well at reading comprehension. Thanks!

Beast, Masiello is an up and coming coach who you would not have to pay 2 million dollars a year. He's a Pitino disciple who I feel from watching some of their games is a good coach. Lavin is getting paid like a top 10 coach. The salary does not equal the results that he is producing. I think any coach worth their salt could have won 20 games with the talent and depth that we had on this roster. It's just my opinion, and we all know about opinions, but I think Masiello is going to become a top tier coach heading a very big program.

You're a good guy, and not flaming this board, so know I'm not attacking you.

Lavin is not in the top ten for salary, someone can probably find an exhaustive list.

Masiello, working for Pitino has that pedigree going for him, but neither you or I are paying Lavin's salary, and to my knowledge if we were paying less, the difference likely would buy a horse. He's not a sure thing, and has yet to recruit a player as good as Harkless, Harrison, Sampson, or Jordan.

Mid Major coaches who've done well are like Triple A stars labeled as can't miss. Sadly, most do.

You don't want to hear about Harkless leaving early, but as soon as Artest and Cook left early, our program began the 10 year reign in the dumper. Had Mullin left early, there'd be no (now very lame) glory year to refer to. All of our other NBA notables - George Johnson, Jayson Williams, Mark Jackson - were full tenure guys. So why can't we postulate how well Lavin's three years of recruits (not 4 mind you) would have done this year had Harkless been a part of it. Fire Lavin would not be the topic of today, that's for certain.

Yes, we were good enough to make it, and that hurts. Team underachieved, but equally put it on players and end game coaching. Two million is irrelevant to me - it's the going rate for a good program, and Lavin is delivering players. Now, answer my question. Where would we be with Harkless?

Where would we be with Harkless?

I don't think the staff was prepared for Harkless to bolt after his freshmen season. Frankly, I thought he'd be here two years before bolting.

I'll tell you where we'd be, if he was here as a junior.... I think we would've finished either in first or second place (frankly, I'm kinda thinking 1st, more so than anything) in the conference. Harkless would've dominated, if he was still here as a junior. You can bet we'd be here talking about receiving a good seed in the NCAA Tournament.

I'm curious to hear the 7 teams you guys expect SJU to finish above.
I really need a pick me up.

Depaul, Butler, Seton Hall, Creighton, Marquette, Georgetown, Providence (in order from bottom up).
Nova and Xavier will be above us.

Enjoy!

Those are the teams I would pick also Simplyred. Gtown could have us slip to #4 but it depends on who comes and goes in April.

If we had Harkless I honestly think we would have been a top 15 team.

While I'm definitely no fan, I think it would be counter-productive at this point to get rid of Lavin.

But there's no reason for the school to commit to another 6 years at $2/million a year--quadruple what Roberts was making--until we get some tangible proof that he can deliver. He is not being paid to deliver us to the NIT every year, he is being paid like someone who actually gets his team to the Big Dance.

If you don't fire him now, you might as well give him an extension.........and this is coming from someone who has NO confidence in Lavin.

Think about it. If you bring him back next year and suffer the same result, then what? You can't get rid of him because you will lose any 2015 recruits he has on the hook. This is why Lavin floated the extension information to the media (leverage).

Releasing him now and allowing a new coach to recruit 2015 seems to be a better option. We won't lose any 2014 recruits since Lavin basically took the year off. The decision is now.

Have you watched Massiello on the sidelines. He is a madman !! Manhattan is still a tier below SJU. Lavin is fine and
great things are in the future for SJU bb.

So what is your bar for what constitutes a "good program?" For me, it's making the NCAA tournament, plain and simple. Delivering players means squat if you can't do that. In fact, it makes it far worse when you don't make the Big Dance, as every SJU fan can attest tonight.

22057, and others who want Lavin to stay.
Lets look at this. If Obekpa leaves, can anyone say with a straight face that we`ll make the NCAA next year?
In 2 years when the seniors leave, most likely Jordan probably goes to the nba, will we make the ncaa even if Briscor and Diallo come?
Most likely not.
So how are great things in the near future for us? I honestly dont get it.

I hate to say that just one player will be the difference between an ncaa appearance, but losing Sanchez and GG, and getting a redshirt player and a HS recruit coming in, if CO leaves then I can`t see how we even match this years 20wins.
But yep, WE`RE IN GREAT SHAPE.

Ok, I understand where your coming from. Just answer me these questions then. Do you think that Lavin had enough talent and depth on this team they way it is currently constituted to make the NCAA Tournament? Do you think the team and the staff underachieved this year? Do you think Lavin's performance as a coach since he has been is worth 2 million a year?

Yes, we were good enough to make it, and that hurts. Team underachieved, but equally put it on players and end game coaching. Two million is irrelevant to me - it's the going rate for a good program, and Lavin is delivering players. Now, answer my question. Where would we be with Harkless?

So what is your bar for what constitutes a "good program?" For me, it's making the NCAA tournament, plain and simple. Delivering players means squat if you can't do that. In fact, it makes it far worse when you don't make the Big Dance, as every SJU fan can attest tonight.

The context was, if the reason for hiring Massielo is to pay less, the going rate for a good, proven coach at the Big east level is going to be $2 million. Below that is a risk. To get a sure fire winner coming from a major conference is going to cost a lot more than $2 million.

Have you watched Massiello on the sidelines. He is a madman !! Manhattan is still a tier below SJU. Lavin is fine and
great things are in the future for SJU bb.

But yep, WE`RE IN GREAT SHAPE.[/quote]

SJUISBACK........I absolutely agree with you. I, too, can't get my head around why people think things are heading in the right direction. We are likely wasting our breath, as there are people on this board who (right through this afternoon!) thought we might get a spot at the dance. The blind optimism is just killing me.

Who seriously thought we had a chance to make it to the NCAA Tournament, as of today?

Seriously, give this stuff a rest. It's repetitive.

I saw more than one post of those who thought there was a chance today. I seem to recall one poster providing a website link that listed a 20% chance. Another poster referenced the Providence sight, insinuating that we would be selected for a play in game. Look....you'll find it.

Give yourself a rest. I am not tired and intend to express my opinions. It is the purpose of the board.

Once again, who seriously (keyword) thought we had a chance to make the NCAA Tournament? I have a hunch that poster didn't seriously believe we had a chance. More like, they were just messing around, as they only posted percentages. Just because someone makes reference to a Providence site talking about us making the tournament; it doesn't mean they thought we would truly make the tournament. Basically, stating someone feel we shouldn't be left out. That's it!

You're looking too much into things.

A moderator or two has already addressed you about your posts. So, that in itself should tell you that you should be careful about rocking the boat. It could eventually tip over.

Am I disappointed that St. John's missed the NCAA Tournament for the 3rd straight year? Yes. Do I think this team should be further along than it is? Yes.

But I can't ignore the fact that this group of players has improved every season under Steve Lavin and his staff. They won 13 in '11, 17 in '12, and 20 in '13. This group of players won 10 games in a pretty good conference this year. What ultimately doomed them was a bad OOC schedule in which they lost to 3 power conference opponents (Wisconsin, Penn State, Syracuse) and lost 4 games to Villanova and Xavier. That's pretty much it. They win 1 of those OOC games and knock off Villanova or Xavier and they are dancing. Unfortunately, they didn't and now are playing in the NIT.

For all the fans calling for Lavin's head, what's the point? The guy has brought St. John's to 3 postseason tournaments (albeit 2 of them were the NIT) and has been a great face for the program. Is he perfect? No. He's not going to be mistaken for Krzyzewsky or Boeheim. Those are extraordinary coaches who as long as they are coaching will keep their teams in the hunt every single season. Lavin is not that. And I hate to break it to fans, St. John's will most likely never have that. No big name coach (such as Donovan a few years back) is ever going to leave that type of program to come to Jamaica Queens with a fan base of 6,000 turning out for a conference game. It's just not going to happen guys. And if the program was to strike it rich with a young coach who turned out to be a stud, he'd be gone before you know it by some big program who was willing to double his salary. Lavin is what he is. He's a great recruiter and a so-so game coach. He's going to get talent in the door and keep the team competitive year in and year out. And to be honest, maybe we should be happy with that. Maybe instead of ripping him apart or calling him a crap coach, we should appreciate the job he has done here (made SJU a relatively relevant program again) and support him in the future. While there was a disappointing finish to this year (unless of course they can win the NIT Tournament which would be cool), next year figures to be a pretty good year for them. If everything goes to plan, we might be talking about a 24 or 25 win team. Maybe even a conference championship. So let's just support him and his staff and see where things fall.

So lets get this straight. We should be happy that out are competitive year in and year out, even if it`s just 19 or 20 wins every year and we get in the NIT?
Even if Obekpa comes back they won`t win 24-25 games, though I could see 22 wins and getting to the NCAA next year.

Support him and his staff? Then give us a reason to support him and his staff.
If no NCAA next year or in 2 years, are we supposed to be all jolly and dancing because he gets us to the NIT?

If you want that then that`s your right. I won`t.

Now if the reports are true about him getting an extension after the season, for what? I guess making the NIT the last 2 years, and getting 2 recruits the last 2 years. Thats tell me that this is acceptable to them.
The day the extension is official, I`m gone.
Probably alot of other dishearted SJU fans will be gone too and everyone on here could complain about the attendance again next year.
But hey Lavin defenders, atleast you won`t have to see negative posts on here anymore.

I`m just saying, he has 2 years left, not saying to can him now, but lets see what he does next year.
If he gets us to the NCAA next year then ok extend him, but why extend him after the nit the last two years?
