Fire Lavin!

I think Lavin will be back next season because 1) People don't walk away from $1.5mil unless they have something similar lined up, and 2) SJU doesn't have a president in place to make any kind of decisions.

But when the time comes I think Orlando Antigua is a perfect fit to be the next coach.

This is a young (catholic) NYC guy from the Bronx, played at St. Rays and for the Guachos and was a McDonalds AA. Went on to Pitt and became an assistant to Dixon after he finished playing. Then went to Memphis as an assistant to Calipari and is now Cal's lead assistant and top recruiter at Kentucky, and the head coach of the Dominican National Team.
And his bio suggests he's a guy many players can relate to, he's been through some rough times. He was shot in the head in HS, and helped hold his family together when they were homeless for a bit. And now he's one of the top recruiters in the country, every HS kid is excited when this guy comes to watch them play. He's probably the only candidate who could out-recruit or at least sustain what Lavin has done recruiting-wise.

Do I know if he's an excellent x's and o's guy? No. But he's not a snake-oil salesman, he's played the game at a very high level, is an elite recruiter with a rolodex of nba players who love him, has been an assistant to multiple Final Four teams, and he's been a head coach on the international level. That's about as qualified as an assistant coach can be. And he's a NYC guy!

There was a profile of him in ESPN the Magazine recently, read it and tell me he shouldn't be on a shortlist when the time comes..

I have a crush Paultz haha. I can admit it. And I swear this is the last I'll bring it up for awhile.

But I just want to get his name out there. How many other coaches can walk into Diallo's living room and say "Listen, you know who I am, but now I'm running my own shop and I really want you. You can go to Syracuse or Kansas and you'll be good, but it might take you awhile to crack the rotation. Or, you can come play for me and have your best chance at being a lottery pick a season from now. Do you want to know if I can coach? He'res my phone, call John Wall, Demarcus Cousins, and Anthony Davis .. and ask them if they would come play for me."
How many young coaches are from NYC and can make a pitch like that? That's going to resonate with kids.
And I like that he's a no bs guy. He's known as hardworking. And he's been tutoring under Dixon and Cal. The guy is the whole package I think.

Some interesting things within this piece. Not really relating to Antigua but something I think we fall into a trap on.

"They'll straight up tell you in a home visit: You're going to have seven other guys equivalent to you," Cauley-Stein says. "You're not going to be the man. You're not going to get to shoot every ball. Coach O wasn't feeding me BS like every other program. He'll tell you the same thing every visit: 'The sky's the limit for you, and if you want to be a pro, come here.'"

What everyone calls chemistry is better described -- at Kentucky, anyway -- as a collective and willing submergence of ego for the greater good. When it works, the dribble-drive motion offense is a fascinating organism. When it doesn't, when every guy looks for his own shot, it's a stagnant mess.

"Look, we could just tell these kids whatever they want to hear, but eventually we have to coach them," Calipari says. "People ask, 'How do you get these kids to buy in?' We're honest with them, that's how.

Orlando Antigua?! Maybe he can run his shop, but he hasn't been head coach at the college level. Successful, but working on a pitch for some high-profile coaches to close the deal.

Sorry, but that's akin to hiring a local guy who has had success recruiting to Kansas under Bill Self. It COULD work, but one hopes the Big East isn't a mid-major program that has to take that chance, and can instead get a coach with some years of experience as a head man on a lower or similar level.

I doubt Lavin will be fired at season end..If we finish last or, have a 4-12 season, I think he will have the option of resigning, with a buyout $$$. I FORGET, DOES HE HAVE A 5 YEAR OR 6 YEAR CONTRACT?

If it's 5 years and we don't give him an extension, he's essentially a lame duck and a negotiated settlement might be the best option.

i do think he will begin to feel some serious heat from the Media soon if the losing continues. Norm got relatively little direct criticism from the Press, right up to the time he was let go.Norm was roasted more on these sites than he was in the papers for some reason..

A lot of things, mostly all bad, have happened with this team..

1.As a group, they are way overrated.
2. Not 1 player has improved their game since coming here.
3.Harrison scores a lot but, takes a lot of shots, some very poor % heaves. The team's ball distribution doesn't flow well because he has the ball at crunch time and doesn't give it up.

4.Sanchez is not a good low post player and , even in the new BE you need muscle inside. H e isn't it. Neither is Obepka or Samspson. We have no inside game at all.
5. Sampson has been AWOL since the league season started. it's a mystery why? Maybe, because there is nothing run for him and he has to go one on one to get a shot?
6. Despite shooting the 3's well last night, in the first half anyway, we aren't a good shooting team most nights. AND, SEE NUMBER 4, no inside game to compensate for poor outside shooting.
7. Team chemistry appears good every place but, on the Court..Not a team that gets a lot of assists.
8. Lavin , for all his alleged motivational and people skills doesn't seem to get these kids to play as team, especially with the game on the line. And, you never see these kids fired up on Defense to make a stop.

As fans here, I think we all figured our "talent," was better than the other conference teams. So far, that hasn't been proven on the Court. Every opponent has us scouted better than we've scouted them.

"Look, we could just tell these kids whatever they want to hear, but eventually we have to coach them," Calipari says. "People ask, 'How do you get these kids to buy in?' We're honest with them, that's how.[/b]

Yea, Calipari is honest. Next time he recruits against Lavin he can tell the recruit Lavin had cancer and won't be lying.

Lavin does a fine job recruiting. We need some inside guys. Sanchez with his big body needs to get some rebs. Some Trees should be top of the recruiting list.

Problem is that we need an Xs & Os coach. What is Mike Dunlop up to these days?

You don't have to be a midmajor to hire an elite assistant, you strike while you can. If we wait for Antigua to go to Marshall and win 20 games for a year or two, then he's going to be in demand by the big schools and be above us a la Shaka Smart or Mark Few.

Marquette plucked Tom Crean as an Izzo assistant, Pittsbugh hired Jamie Dixon and UCONN just hired Kevin Ollie.
I respect the opinion that we should pursue someone with HC experience, that makes a lot of sense. But it's not below a "high major" to hire an excellent assistant.

I know this is a long shot but I'd like to see a young whipper snapper such as Steve Woc.........ski from Duke. Probably not going to happen since he'll be coach K's replacement.

Another good option. I think a lot comes down to who is doing the hiring.
If a new AD is here, and he conducts a real search ... then there are a number of candidates I would be happy with.

Spot on. Not that Antigua specifically is or isn't the right person for the job, or that we can't get somebody better or with more experience. But if better programs than us can take a shot on guys with no HC experience based on a projection that he is going to be the goods, so can we. Every great head coach had someone take a shot on them in their first job.

Hopefully Lavin is here for a long time based on success and this conversation is moot. But if and when we are looking for a coach we have to be realistic about where we are. There are variables that can swing it either way (namely $$), but generally we're a decent job, not a great one. Sometimes we lack that reality (myself included). There was a conversation a while back about the virtues of SJU v. Cincy (#19, 16-2, 5-0, on their way to a 4th consecutive NCAA bid) when it came to the attractiveness of the programs for recruits that is currently comical in retrospect.
