From my perspective the only reason that the Republican party is pro Israel because of the religious right believes that in order for the Messiah to come, the Jews must be in control of the Holy Land. Once the Messiah comes all Jews are killed and everyone else lives happily ever after.
Andrew,
I spent more than 10 years of my life studying the Bible, in a Catholic Church group and in a non-denominational group that had various Christian denominations including many evangelicals. The view that you hold and the basis for it in the link you provided is nothing I have ever heard uttered in any capacity by any group or single person. You are certainly free to believe what you want, but the article you cite, which uses the phrase "many" and "some" Evangelicals appears to me to be another crackpot "the world is ending" scenario. Evangelicals overwhelmingly support Israel and Judaism as "elder brothers" in faith, as Christianity sprung forth from Judaism as the fulfillment of the Messiah promised in Scripture. On Easter Sunday, Catholic liturgy and many mainstream Christian denomination offer prayers for bother Israel and all Jewish people.
There is simply no substantive basis for the belief you hold - that there is somehow some largescale underground belief that for the second coming of Christ to occur that the state of Israel must be a Jewish state, and at that time all Jews will be killed. The New Testament book of Revelation speaks very cryptically and darkly about end times as a time of final judgment, but is filled with allegory.
I can say that overwhelmingly Evangelicals support Israel as God's mandate to them as His favor rests upon his people. That's completely froma religious and spiritual sense. From a common sense political orientation, Evangelicals support Israel as the strongest democracy and voice of reason in the middle east.
President Harry Truman, perhaps the greatest President of the last 100 years, and certainly facing the most difficult decisions, nearly stood alone in his support of the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine. Even his secretary of state (Marshall) and closest advisors were against it. Marshall warned that should Israel be created, it would forever require the military support of the US to survive. He wasn't incorrect.
