Dominic Artis, Oregon Transfer

Let me be the first to start the distasteful Artis jokes. I hear he's really good at double teaming when you least expect it.
Also great at the arm bar defense.

DONT LIKE ARTIS...AS REDMAN WEST SAYS=HE'S SMALL,DID NOTHING FOR OREGON=MAY BE TROUBLE FOR CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY= DON'T LIKE THIS REFORM HIM,SAVE HIM STUFF..HYPOCRITICAL ....LAVIN PROBABLY KNOWS HE'S NOT GETTING ANY TOP 100 RECRUITS..THE ONLY ARTIS ACCEPTABLE TO SJ IS ARTIS GILMORE

THAT BUTTON LABELED CAPS LOCK IS THERE FOR A REASON. YOU SHOULD TRY HITTING IT ONE TIME TO SEE WHAT IT DOES.

@NYPost_Brazille: On Dominic Artis told he will take a few more visits and St John's higher ups would have to sign off on him, which has yet to happen. #sjubb

Seems like a waste of St. John's funds if we sprang for a visit, but the higher-ups don't sign off.

SJU should avoid this recruit like the plague, the young man had two red flags at Oregon and was kicked out. 11 or so years ago SJU had a chance to discipline a young player by the name of Grady Reynolds after he assaulted a female student breaking her knee they failed to suspend Reynolds for even one game for fear of being politically incorrect with their morally corrupt head coach. A year or so later Mr. Reynolds was the ringleader in the Pitt scandal that set the program back for years. We have been warned President Gompesaw there is too much to lose bringing this young man in, the risk far outweighs the reward.

Like I said earlier. I don't want Artis most because I don't think he's any good. Sure he was the 8th best PG in his class but it was a brutal PG class.

As far as the stuff with that girl. She had ample opportunities to get herself out of the situation. The first incident happened during a party where they let her leave the bathroom to get a drink of water. She didn't have to go back in or she could have caused a scene there. Then when they left the party and were outside she was back with her friends and didn't have to get in the taxi to go to Artis' apartment. After crying and them stopping that night, she had sex with Artis in the morning again. Then less than 24 hours later she had sex with Joseph Young.

I'm not saying he's not a scumbag and took advantage of both his status as a basketball player and girl who over-consumed alcohol. But the whole story is sketchy. She didn't want to report anyone. It was her dad who found out and called the police to get this ball rolling.

She had sex with Joseph Young the next day, while her alleged rapists Artis and Dotson were in the very next room. She went there during the day, on her own volition. Sketchy indeed.

Let me ask a different question: Why do we even need this guy? He's a small guard, did not really distinguish himself at Oregon and we are loaded with guards, at least this coming year. Can you tell me why we need him? Is it because we're afraid we lose all our guards after this year and struck out in recruiting?

And the other stuff would DQ him for me anyway.

I'll ask another question
Why wouldn't Lavin do his "due diligence" and research the situation BEFORE agreeing to host Artis on a visit?
Lavin would look foolish if Artis visits, likes what he sees, verbally commits and is then told that he is not welcomed as a student-athlete at St John's
May make him look foolish but it would help him maintain his rep as a "great recruiter".

Recruiting kids like Artis does not help Lavin maintain his rep as a "great recruiter" IMHO
I would maintain that recruiting Artis does not enhance but rather detracts from Lavin's reputation as a recruiter

Getting Artis out of hs would have made him look like a great recruiter. Landing a kid 95% of schools won't touch makes him like desperate. He will have to explanin this to every dad of a recruit that has a daughter.

Blow back on this one is brewing.

Really? What does recruiting Artis has to do with being or not being a "great recruiter?" Those two aren't mutual.

Maybe Artis can teach the guys how to properly trap on D.
Too soon?

I kid. Wherever he goes, he'll be on a short leash and he knows that. He's a talented kid and I'm sure he's been humbled by all of this. If he comes here, let's at least give him the benefit of the doubt before we label him a deviant for life. He'll get enough of that from the opposition. And nobody let him talk to Sirvoo.

@NYPost_Brazille: St. John's needs guards in 2015 and Dom Artis needs a fresh start. Seems like a perfect fit -- with a caveat.

link did not work, so I edited.

Deal. This is a win win. Like you said our trap will be overwhelming to escape and this kid gets 1 final shot.

Thought these parts were pretty interesting:

Lavin goes back with several of Artis’ coaches, such as Olivier, who thinks the two would be an ideal fit.
“Dominic really took to him. They’ve talked about a lot of things,” Olivier said. “That’s a guy that really cares. It’s not just about basketball.
“Like I told Dominic, you open up to people. He’s a kid, he make a mistake. Be straightforward, which he has been.”

A source said landing Artis would preclude St. John’s from landing Briscoe, one of the highest-ranked guards in the country, who is also being recruited by a number of elite programs, such as Syracuse, Louisville and Arizona, in addition to locals Seton Hall and Rutgers.

.........................

Doing Olivier a favor here might open up Lavin's opportunities in the future with the Oakland Soldiers -- if we can get on some kids' future lists, then maybe Lavin can work some magic at an in-home. Certainly wouldn't mind it being suggested to Ivan Rabb that he listen to our pitch.

athletes getting away with rape is not new, but we allow it to continue by giving him a scholarship to sju. Some of these stories are made up or over exaggerated by the so called victims others, are completely true. Now not only do we know that he was there and that she was raped, but because she was "an unreliable witness" he didn't get charge. So basically this kid got luck. So no I don't want him on the team or on this campus. I hope if he does end up going to sju the female students rally against him. The fact that Lavin is doing this is kinda disgusting and I think he is showing signs of desperation. Now if he comes and is nothing but a pleasure, fine he got lucky and made the best of it, but I don't like the idea of him on this team.

I can appreciate your feelings on this, especially being the father of daughters. What I've always told my kids (boy and girls) , especially during college years, is to always be sober enough to be in complete control of your decisions. We live in a culture where NSA sex, especially on college campuses, and certainly to athletes. Alcohol clouds decisions, in this case likely for all involved parties. The accuser, if intoxicated, may not have the most accurate impression on how this all happened. Would you prefer that a kid, who was apparently not in trouble before, have his entire future destroyed over a serious incident where no criminal charges are filed. Remove alcohol from this situation, and I'd basically agree with your conclusions, but even then, not having been there, neither of us know, do we?

One thing Lavin does do fairly well is discipline of players. If this guy can help us win I have no problem bringing him aboard. Im sure there will be a zero tolerance policy with him and if there is even the slightest hiccup he will be gone without us even knowing what happened.
