Dominic Artis, Oregon Transfer

Perhaps if Mr. Lavin and his "hard working staff" focused on signing recruits during the regular high school recruiting cycles then he would not be recruiting from behind playing the redshirt and transfer game.

It will be interesting too see what Dr. Gempesaw thinks about Lavin's.

This actually contradicts what you were once saying, Otis. Initially, you were stating he recruited several kids from the '14 class, but missed out on 'em.

Hey Beast:

Nice attempt to spin using Mr. Harkless' transfer 2 years ago as an excuse.

News flash.... kids leave for the NBA, get injured, and transfer which events should surprise an experienced college basketball coach. Injuries, early departure for the NBA and transfers are reasons why successful coaches recruit each year.

To his credit Mr. Lavin did not take the season off during the 2014 recruiting cycle because it has been reported (see Rivals) that Lavin extended 14 scholarship offers to players during the 2014 recruiting cycle but was turned down 13 times with only 3* DelaRosa a realistic possibility.

I am not in the "Fire Lavin" group but I believe that he has serious flaws and I lack the level of confidence in his abilities which I once had. IMO he gets a grade of "incomplete"

So, what is it?

Lets see Kobe was accused, Big Ben from the steelers, Jimmy from syracuse came to the defense of a sexual predator on his staff, Duke lax players lives were put through the ringer, Jameis at FSU, everybody wanted Lance to come here despite his sexual assault allegations while at lincoln. I am by no means happy with having to resort to bringing in a kid with baggage and allegations of that nature but please with this holier then thou attitude and turning this into a reason to bash Lavin, cause if you look deep enough into many of these kids you will find a reason or things in they're past not to bring them in. And when he lands at Providence or Seton Hall many of these posters will be bashing Lavin.

Lavin has his own reasons for doing this. Maybe he thinks he can help save a kid. I think passing might be smarter given the bad press that may ensue, but I'm not going to rip Lavin a new one.

Or perhaps he thinks the kid can help save him.

John 8:7

I'm sure plenty of you have been given second and third chances with many things in your life. As others have mentioned, many athletes have been given multiple chances. Majority of us don't have a clue what type of lives these kids have lived. I've done stupid things in my life that I regretted and moved on from. Too bad Dominic and myself aren't perfect like the majority of this board. Surprised more people weren't upset that we brought in Thomas since he had a bunch of issues a few years back. But hey, he helps fill our rebounding void, we'll look past his shady background

Keep living in what ever world your in, cause your blind if you think this is the first college athlete to be involved in sexual escapdes that you don't agree with.

I can't speak for Main Man, but I'm pretty open-minded. I have no problem with someone having sex with a woman while she blows two of his friends. I do draw the line at the whole rape thing, though. And holding a woman hostage. I think there's too much doubt here to risk giving the kid his second chance here.

Is there too much doubt to risk giving him a chance --or too much doubt to risk ruining his life on the basis of one incident where there is still a lot of gray area and he hasn't been charged with anything? I'm not saying we should definitely take him, but I don't think it's necessarily a straightforward situation, either.

Technically he was never convicted of a crime for what' s that worth Perhaps coach has decided he is a kid worth saving

Back in the early 90's, Wifred Kirklady, a highly regarded recruit out of Brooklyn, Riverside Church was a highly regarded blue chipper who started out at Boys and Girls High and then transferred to Oak Hill Academy. While on a recruiting visit to Syracuse he was accused of rape, arrested and charged. Offered a plea deal hem refused while professing his innocence. Basically all of the schools that were recruiting him, including us, stopped and Oak Hill dismissed him.

The charges eventually wound up being dropped after a video tape was discovered where the accuser stated her plan to entrap athletes. Kirklady was exonerated with the Judge giving him an apology.

I bring this up to point out that accusation are just that, not necessarily the truth.

That being said, I read the original Oregon article along with the Police report and don't wish to go over it again. As the father of an incoming freshman and a transfer at another school, I am under no delusions that there are going to be students of questionable character in school with both of them, no matter what school they decided to go to. These you don't hear about because they are not athletes. This would be the case at any other school. This is a more visible case and quit frankly, I'd rather the school who has had enough "character" problems from in the Executive Office and basketball program in this short century, just say no thanks and move on.

Yes many have gotten second chances, but in this case it doesn't mean we have to be the one to provide it.

As for Mr. Kirklady, WVa. stood by his side and he committed to play there. Unfortunately, returning to school after a break, he had teammate Larry Pollard (Boys and Girls, Riverside) where involved in a car accident and both were seriously injured. Pollard eventually made it back to the court after a redshirt year, but Kirklady never did and eventually had to have one leg amputated.

Artis had a previous nine game suspension at Oregon, granted for lesser issue. (Selling sneakers on EBay) To be run off at Oregon, you usually have to commit a felony against one of Phil Knight's family members. All in all, too many red flags for me. Someone else will take him. The notion that SJU would ruin his life by not giving him a chance is absurd.

Yes, I neglected to mention the other red flag.

He's a perfect recruit for Jarvis.

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck................................

I'm not saying SJU alone will ruin his life. But collectively, if every other program feels the same way and dismisses him as too toxic to play D1 ball - then yes, his life as he knew it will be ruined.

Was he convicted of a crime?

Does he take up minutes from PGIV assuming he can play this yr?

Figure out the answer to these questions and you know where i stand. Some of the most heinous crimes involve battering and raping women. At the same time the phrase "innocent until proven guilty" holds true more in these cases than any other. I've seen way too many women cry foul since the Duke lax case and nothing ever materializes because they fabricate. I'd rather have Artis on my team than have that girl be my daughter.

He wasn't convicted. He won't be eligible this season.

I hope we don't get him.

Even if I take all his personal stuff out of the mix, I really don't think Artis is a good player.

One thing consistent in all the interviews is that they stopped when she started to cry.

So they got that going for them, which is nice.

‏@AdamZagoria Dominic Artis will commit on his visit to St. John's if all goes well, Mark Olivier of the Oakland Soldiers tells @SNYtv. "I think so."
