Do we still have a chance -- NCAA Tourney?

It's important for our squad to not get a play in game either with our depth we would be doomed. Big game tonight on the road in our quest for the tourney and for is to be playing our best ball in March.

Let's talk after tonight. I really believe this is the season tonight. It's likely our last "reasonable" chance of getting a high profile road win. ( I don't see us beating Xavier, G'town or nova on the road)
Get to 4-5 and I think its better than 50-50 that we'll find a way to get in. Drop to 3-6 and I think it's very unlikely. It's just that big a difference.

I think we can get in at 9-9 and a win in the Big East Tournament. Our resultant RPI (Top 40) and SOS (Top 30) will be high enough that three Top 70 RPI (and maybe better) road wins in PC, SU and BU and no worse than 6 Top 50 RPI wins and likely 9-10 Top 100 RPI wins combined with passing the eye test against Duke in one of the most watched games of the year gets us in. But, you have to get to 9-9. Don't see us getting in at 8-10 unless you were to lose a heartbreaker in the BET Final which have to be considered extremely unlikely due to our depth and inability to get to 9-9 in conference.

Best post of the day. We as fans can argue about RPI and SOS all day. Here are the facts:

- OOC schedule was good, but not spectacular. They got some wins against solid programs (notably Minnesota, Syracuse, and St. Mary's).
- Lavin can brag about playing 3 future #1 seeds all he wants. Yes, the team played Gonzaga, Villanova, and Duke well. No, they didn't win any of the games. No such thing as moral victories when your team is juniors and seniors.
- Only legitimate conference team you've beaten so far has been Providence (twice). Yes, you won a home game against Marquette. But St. John's are seniors and Marquette is rebuilding. You've lost to every other Big East competition (SHU, Butler, Villanova).
- I don't care if it's only the road, you have no business losing to both DePaul and Creighton. None. I don't care if you're shorthanded. Those are 2 bad losses you can't get back.

So here's the deal. When it comes down to it, the ESPN guy is right. SJU's only real calling card is they've beaten Syracuse and Providence. You want to get back into the picture? Go into Butler's arena and beat them tonight.

What's sad is if we miss NCAAs the head of the NIT said he didn't want to invite us back because of how we treated it last year, so we could be looking at CBI

Best to just put the balls away be that the case, which is unlikely.

Where was he quoted on that? I missed that one.

Really??? Is that even a question?? Come on... we are not an ncaa caliber team.. we ain't going anywhere this year. We will win maybe 7 big East games. 7-11 and be one and done in big East tourney. Is there any reason that this team would show any glimmer of hope? No way. Inconsistent, thin, and can't close out close games. Sad for a senior laden team and poor reflection of the entire coaching staff. "We turn our attention now to creighton"... lol. Steve lavin loves this team..

If we don't beat Xavier and Georgetown Lavin needs to rest Harrison until the BET.

That's our only chance at running the table in the BET. Get Harrision healthy and we may have an outside chance.

I'll bring this post back up in March.

A day early.

@DickieV: Great comeback by Cuse to win to avoid a bad L to VT -St John's playing themselves into NIT-ARKANSAS rolls / Gators go down vs Vandy

Never liked that guy. I find him about as refreshing a personality and as easy on the eyes as Joe Garagiola. Never got either of them or understood their ever present appearance on TV.

22 of 33 D1 conferences do not have a single ranked team. All get automatic bids, no? The top 25 is a lock. So right now 47 seven schools are a lock to get in (conference winners plus top 25). Everyone else is competing for 19 remaining at large bids (including play in game). That's what makes it so tough to earn an at large if you are on the bubble.

No one has answered the question directly, so let me please do so:

No, NFW, nada, null, nope, nein, not a chance, no, I don't think so and, last but not least, are you crazy?

bump

Francesa with an embrace of the obvious: St. John's not an NCAA team right now.

He is correct. The PARTY'S OVER (if there ever was a party)

I feel if they cant make the big dance this year they should just put the balls away. No use going to the NIT like they did last year, not really with their hearts into it (by the way does anyone recall the fact that it was Walt Frazier whose college (forgot name) won the NIT) Sometimes a star can come out of that tournament

Southern Illinois and Frazier was more then a star. I never thought the Knicks could be good until he got through his rookie year and you saw how he could control the game. NIT rocked in those years. I don't remember or know when the changeover happened but there was a time the second best team in the country could have missed out on the NCAA's. Thats why the ACC tourny became so big. Only the winner went. The NIT was by invitation only to the best teams in the country. My apologies to the guys who knew that. Probably all of you.

We aren't dead yet. It doesn't look good but we shouldn't be in "I'll start caring again for the Big East Tournament" mode yet.

Look at it this way, in Lunardi's Monday bracket we were in the "Last 4 In" group. Now whether you believe in his ability or not, that's fine. He may not get every team right all the time but him having us there does mean we are in the conversation. And if we are in his "Last 4 In" on Monday, losing to the #15 ranked RPI team in the country in their building and assuming a win on Saturday, I can't see us falling much further than "Last 4 Out" or "Next 4 Out." Regardless, we are still in the conversation.

We aren't playing well and it doesn't look good but we still have a season so far.

I'll say this though, if we don't win the next two games against these +100 RPI teams we can throw in the towel.
