DePaul, Sat. Jan. 6, 2p, YES (FOX) /Radio 570AM or 970AM

Walking out of that Gym today I was LIVID. Watching Depaul manhandle us in every facet was humiliating, and watching there kids basically laughing at us made it even worse. Then there is our own players smiling on the bench while we are getting our asses kicked. The only two St. John’s players/staff who showed any energy wasYakwe & Greg St. Jean yelling on the bench. Maybe if it was Mullin yelling occasionally it would be effective.

I’m on the record here somewhere wanting B. Hurley as the coach but that ship has sailed. I jumped in with Mullin and will continue. Lets look what is going on ......
1. Depth was an issue going in. And here we are In conference play getting shredded. A injury
To Lovett, the poor development of Yakwe (or lack of basketball talent), only having 9 scholarship players. Having NO FRONTCOURT TALENT. Owens has suddenly become a stretch 4 (kudos to him for working on his perimeter game) but we need him in the paint. We just get crushed on the boards. These guys are gassed by 10 minutes mark. And if a player isn’t playing well Mullin has to go with who he has.

2. No one has emerged as an on court leader. Ponds is a great scorer but leader? Not even close. Personally I think Shamorie is soft. Just once I would love to see a player get in a teammates face and call them out for a piss poor play or decision. I though Clark was going to be that guy, so far I’m wrong.

3. Coaching has been so so this year. I thought early in the year they were running some nice sets. But the last 5-6 games totally lost. The fact we get zoned every game and still can’t be somewhat effective is baffling. Defensively we have limited matchup ability with 6 guys. But a lot of defense especially on the perimeter is hustle and effort.

4. Sorry the crowd at Carnesecca blows. This is my first year as season ticket holder. Total snooze fest. Half of the sections up top are community freebies given away. No energy at all. I think the average age for a season ticket holder is 75 . I have 6 that sit directly in front of me (2 are around 30) I can’t think of once all season where they got up and actually made some noise. If I hurt your feelings sorry . Now of course it’s school has been out so maybe that will change. I will say the Nebraska game crowd was pretty good.

5. Our OCS was soft leading us too a 10-2 record. With the exception of Arizona St. Leading many to some NCAA expectations. And here we are 0-4 in the Big East totally at the Nuclear level.

Chris Mullin is the head coach it’s on him. If you wanted him as our head coach or not, hope that he succeeds. Can you live with another Rebuild? If your on here it’s mostly Likely you love St. John’s basketball. I know I do.

Here’s the good news we have good basketball players coming in next year.

I have full confidence there will be a shakeup in his staff for next season.

Fortunately I wasn’t able to attend the game yesterday. I liked a lot of what you said particularly about the crowd at CA. I don’t think it’s an age thing but a culture. If everybody else is sitting then why get up?There are games where I get up and implore people to cheer and it’s difficult. Of course that wasn’t going to make yesterday a win but it sure doesn’t help. The facility is not what we would hope for but why not make the most of it. Don’t give up on your season tickets as we need more fans like you. I am committed to two more years with Mullin and hope we see improvement.

Redmen Village is turning on each other like a bunch of Hollywood progressives. I think it was Frank McGuire who said “You coach, and I’ll recruit, and I’ll beat you every time”. Seems to me we have made progress on the recruiting front. I also think it’s only fair to give any coach a minimum of 4 years to be successful, so that they have a chance at having their own roster.

I thought the Mullin hire would be a disaster. The posters here made arguments as to why it was a good move, so I said “ok, let’s see”. This year has been maddening to say the least, but I don’t think it’s torch and pitchfork time. I try to remember that losing one key guy on a short rotation can be devastating. And it has been. Oh well. And if our coach was named Hurley, we’d be saying he was Lost.

I said it last week. We don’t have Big East level players except for Ponds and LoVett. Ponds is in a serious slump and making bad decisions like everyone else. Mullen hasn’t been great and they seem to need better, more focused practice planning but Mullin is not the problem right now

So if we are and will be the last place team in the Big East in year three....even behind DePaul. ...in a 10 team conference it must be Lavin's fault.
So DePaul and Providence and Georgetown have Big East level players and we don't. It's Lavins fault.
Let's just make believe that Lavin didn't coach his teams to 4 winning seasons with 2 NITs and 2 NCAA invitations.
Let's make believe he didn't accomplish that in the old Big East that included not only Villanova, Georgetown and Providence but also Syracuse, Pitt, Cincinnati, West Virginia, UCONN, Notre Dame and Louisville.

Let's make believe Lavin left the roster with only 3 players instead of the new staff releasing Lavin recruits and decommittments from 2 three star and one 4 star recruit leaving the new staff to begin re-recruiting as they did with Lovett.
If they need better and more focused practices it must be Ron Linfont's fault since he was a carry-over from the previous staff.
Let's make believe Kassoum Yakwe was not a 4 star player his senior year on par with Jesse Govan and rated higher than Matt Ryan of Notre Dame. Let's forget he was a very promising freshman who has declined every year under this staff.
Let's make believe the rest of the team is not composed of 3, 4 and one 5 star players who, by any rational standard, should not be dead last in a 10 team conference.
It is the players.

I’m struggling to grasp your argument. Are you actually disputing that Lavin left the cupboard bare?

Brandon Sampson was a nice recruit, but there was no guarantee he would have ultimately signed a LOI here Had Lavin stayed. And Sampson is hardly a game changer. He’s putting up very modest numbers at LSU. I’d much rather have Ponds — no comparison.

In reading your posts, one can’t help but think you have a bit of an agenda and that you were waiting for the program to struggle under Mullin this year so you could gleefully proclaim “I told you so, I told you so . . .”

Same here. Missed my first game yesterday. I agree on the crowd. I started St. John's when Mullin was a junior. The garden or school was always packed houses. Great enthusiastic crowds - loved it.
Figured by year 3 we'd at least be in the middle of the pack or better. Very disappointed the way the season has turnedYes of course Lovetts injury hurts a lot

Let's knock off Georetown. Always great to beat them!

Regarding #5, I don't think you can hold anyone's feet to the fire for that. UCF, Grand Canyon, Iona, and St. Joe's all were picked to be much better then they've been. Schedule intent was good, but it didn't work out. Happens sometimes. It's not like we pulled a Georgetown or a Rutgers.

I have always been in favor of hiring Mike Rice as an assistant but after this latest debacle I realize he would explode after a practice or two.

No blame on the schedule. My point was it was soft 10-2. Which raised expectations of many fans. I was happy with the record but I wasn’t checking RPI’s and waiting for Lunardi projections. We were borderline bubble team and most likely NIT team. Then Lovett’s injury now we are bottom feeders of the big east. For me it mainly goes back to point 1.

I've stayed off the site since I got home from the game yesterday and I don't want to wade through everyone's frustrations with what happened and what didn't happen, but I have three observations.

Kassoum was the only guy who seemed to play with any passion.

When are we going to learn to box out, they killed us with offensive rebounds and put-backs.

I love Shamorie but........he's a real liability on defense and sometimes he goes for himself too much. The classic example was after KY's 3 point play in the second half we cut it to six, forced a turnover and Shamorie came down and clanked a 3 pointer when he was 1 on 4. Now I know he's our best offensive threat and if he had hit that shot it could have been a real turning point, but he missed and that was that.

Had moments when I felt players just did not care Wonder if coach were to put on a tie it might help a bit

I don’t mean to be offensive but, asking whether Mullin should wear a Tie to improve on Court Play is a stretch . Reviewing the game yesterday , seeing all the Post game comments here and taking a look at the Box Score and trying to understand such a poor performance yesterday , I come up with the following :1. Most of us got pumped up with the transfers of Simon and Clark, sight unseen last Year . Many here assigned them the role of being all we needed to step up into the top half echelon of the BE. Both, are nice Players capable of being solid secondary contributors . They are not currently Going to make any BE first , second or 3 rd Teams . The League is just too talented , too to bottom .2. If we thought Clark was going to be a Banger and strong Rebounder, we thought wrong . He likes the Wing and Corner . 3. Simon gets good marks in all categories , except shooting . He can’t be accurate beyond 10 feet . And , he misses a lot of dunks and bunnies too . But, right now , I would give him the Ball and let him be the PG. Ponds handling the ball toomuch and trying to be a Playmaker isn’t working . Neither is shooting 7-24 or 1-9 from 3 Pt range . The Team played better against Seton Hall and Creighton with
Simon at the point . 4. Owens need to stop thinking his job is to reign 3’s from outside and realize he is not the Shooting Guard . He drifted outside way too much yesterday and had little chance to block shots or attempt to rebound , which is a glaring Team Weakness 6. Ahmed is what he is and makes sure he gets his turn at driving to the hoop or Shooting the long 3. He is not going to change at this point .He rarely ever gets a rebound or challenge opponents underneath . 7. Lovett is a significant loss , no one anticipated . We could get through the final games of the OOC schedule , without him, but , Not BE Play . Losing 14-15 points a game is a back breaker . 8. Mussini, Mussini, Mussini, boy do we miss him this year . Losing the best pure shooter on the team hurts more than we all thought . So, he wasn’t the quickest or best defender ? So what ? Neither is Ponds! His loss and the loss of Lovett have been as devastating as the Mets losing all their starters . We were a thin team to begin with and now , not even that .9. There have been a lot of cheap shots at Mullin and the Coaches . People here forget how little Lavin was able to do , despite coming from UCLA, ESPN with a big rep . How many of Steve’s players got any better ? None . Blaming Mullin for players missing 17 shots , not rebounding or playing smart needs to be directed just as much to the Players themselves . 10. Seemingly we havea nice balance of new kids and transfers coming in next season , with some highly touted players . Let’s see a full 3 Years of what Mullin can do with his players . Year one has to be thrown out as that was all Lavin’s doing .

Great post. Thoughtful insights. Thanks. I think we do have 6 core players that are BE caliber--LoVett, Ponds, Simon, Ahmed, Owens, Clark--and very talented, but each has things to improve on and often, each try to do too much. Plus, LoVett's injury is by far the major reason we're 0-4 in Conference play, while Ponds' injury, poor shooting, lackadaisical defense, and lethargic PG play is the other. Passing is not crisp, it's 'stationary' and results in little 'movement'--plus players are out of position in a rush to shoot 3's, and are not in sync on Offense or Defense.
Is that coaching? Or is it lack of depth that has made us a winded and disoriented gaggle of arms and legs in the 2nd halves of BE games?
I think it's a combo of injuries to LoVett and Ponds, no depth, kids trying to be heroes, and inexperienced college coaching--but this last point may be unfair, because our lack of depth and LoVett's injury in particular, would make it a major challenge for even Coach K to win this year in the Big East.

None of Lavin’s players got better except for Phil Green, Dom Pointer, Rysheed Jordan, Chris Obekpa, Jamal Branch, DeAngelo Harrison . . .

And Dwight Hardy and Justin Brownlee were thriving under Norm. Bonehead move by Lavin to insert them in the starting lineup! Clearly Booth and Evans were the better players!

Agree what he did with that team proves he made guys better. Also, Phil Greene improved greatly.

Year 1 was on our President "Bobby" and Joe Oliva. You either fire lavin after year 4 or you give him a contract extension. That's what happens when you have people in charge who think they know basketball. My fear is Goff does not have full authority over basketball program and that could be bad news.

him roaming the outside gives us virtually no chance of second chance points. I just wrote the other game how much I enjoy watching Owens play but he needs to get off the perimeter ASAP and Mullin needs to make sure of that

Well he had 14 rebounds against Seton Hall despite shooting threes. I don’t think he’s roaming the outside any more than usual. He just has a bit more confidence to shoot. He will never be a traditional inside player. As long as he’s making them at a decent clip, I have no problem with him hoisting up a few threes a game, particularly with LoVett out.

Doing so should not affect his defensive rebounding and shot blocking.

Agree....Owens is least of our issues....

Since the SH game where Owens started taking 3's - he's 41.6% (5 of 12) with a total of 23 rebounds

SH 2 of 4
Creighton 2 of 6
DePaul 1 of 2

the % is good but the thing is if he is drifting the perimeter whether he takes the shot or someone else does it will be much harder for our other guys to even attempt a rebound since we have no-one with size down low and it's been easier for the other team to box our guys out. I've seen way too many shots from our guys where we have maybe 1 guy remotely close to the basket and the other team it seems has like 3 guys

I'd say in fairness to Owens part of the problem is Mullin gives a green light to everyone including Ron Linfonte to hoist shots from anywhere so as fans we can get even more frustrated

How does Owens shooting threes inhibit his ability to block shots and grab defensive rebounds? With the exception of yesterday, Owens has been playing very well.
him roaming the outside gives us virtually no chance of second chance points.

Owens is the only player making progress because he worked with his dad in the off season. He is a much better option than Alibegovic from the outside and is a natural forward. Once his ability to play defense and attack the glass improves he could be a go to guy. He is the least of the problem .

Any fair assessment of Mullin’s coaching has to throw out Season 1 as that was really a function of Lavin’s non existent recruiting . The 2 Transfers ,Simon and Clark are not program changers . Many here built them up as the Players who would take us to the next level . They haven’t yet and they played as poorly today as the rest of the team . They are average players who would have struggled for any PT at their former schools , Arizona and Mich State . Owens suddenly believes he is the best outside shooting option , while forgetting he should be blocking shots and make a effort at rebounding . Ahmed is What he is and we are getting that . Nothing more .

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Like last year, so many were hyping these 2 up: "oh oh just wait till next year, simon is the real deal, and marvin is gonna help alot." Most of the time when people hype recruits or transfers, they just turn out to be avg players, which is why not when I hear someone being hyped on here, I just laugh.
There's a reason why certain players transfer out of top schools, they can't cut it there.
