DePaul, Mon. Jan. 16, 4:30pm, FS1/970AM

I think Lovett has some type of injury he wasn't on the bench at one stretch.

For big stretch

Might have been posted (haven't had a chance to go through all of the pages) but the first two times he came out of the game he went right to an exercise bike that was set-up to the left of the student section on that end (back a few feet from the court so it was barely visible)

Lovett rides the bike in the hallway rather than sit on the bench. To keep his hamstring loose.

I've noticed that the last few home games at CA. Not sure if that's the case today.
he rode it to white castle down the road

The White Castle that use to be on Union Turnpike is gone.

WRT Ahmed I generally sympathize with Logen but agree with Fun. Ahmed is enormously frustrating to watch. He has talent but is not a team player, and has a tendency to be a team killer. He is just as apt to shoot you out of a game as into it.

For all that, he is really the only scoring option with some size on the team. And like many JUCO players, he is used to being the first, second and third option and succeeding on pure ability and athleticism. That does not work at this level, and it takes many of them a year to figure it out.

Bottom line is he is needed despite the frustration level he causes. We can hope for better next year. And he could still use the occasional benching as reinforcement, which is happening.

Boy, let me make it clear - in no way shape or form was I saying Ahmed is not valuable or should be benched. I was referring specifically to the fact that in the last 2 1/2 minutes of the game he bull rushed into a couple of defenders and jacked a 3 with a significant amount of time left on the shot clock both times. I was venting and alluding to taking him out AT THAT POINT IN TIME of the game because of his either a) selfish play looking for points or b) complete lack of awareness of time and score.

No wonder why Tariq can't fatten up!

Ponds and Lovett have both gotten crushed by picks lately. Good point that nobody on the team seems to know how to call them out. Can't have the guards getting creamed like that

IT seems we do not k ow how to set a pick also have not seen us purposely set them for our guards

Please get Ahmed off the court, are you kidding me!!

14 points, 7 rebounds three assists, get him off the court, let's give Alimakeawish some run, are you kidding me, several exclamation points.

Which of course gives him the freedom to jack and bull rush rather than run clock at the end of the game. But I understand the nuances of playing intelligent, winning basketball go right over your head. I wonder at your response had AA made such dumb plays.

It's a shame Bobby Kelly doesn't have any more eligibility, then you could watch nuanced intelligent winning basketball again.

Sparnakle called it right he is a wild card. Don't know what he will do from possession to possession. Ellison is like that as well.
If we are better next year I wouldn't mind Ahmad coming off the bench. If he is playing well great, if he plays like a nut he gets yanked.

It's pretty [strike]nuanced[/strike] obvious that he forces things and doesn't always make the best decisions. But he plays hard, he rebounds, and he's the only big man we have who can score. Despite which he takes a lot of heat.

We've had a bunch of JUCOs who struggled their junior year and picked it up the next: Brownlee, Hardy and James Scott, of whom Ahmed reminds me more and more, to the extent I can remember 20 years ago.

Just because he is our best (and only) front court scorer does not mean he should not pull up some bench when he does the me against everyone act. That being said, in general, he needs to be on the court more than off of it (even with the occasional sit here and think about it time on the bench). I totally agree with you on Hardy and Brownlee but don't recall Scott picking it up his second year (and that could just be me not remembering 20 years ago to well :) :) :)

Had nice year. Got him cup of coffee in NBA

We could add Boo Harvey at that list.

Didn't both Harvey and Scott have to sit out a year before they played their senior years? I know Harvey did but I think Scott as well. Maybe that is the ticket. Someone pull a Tonya Harding on Ahmed and we will really have something in two years.

Boo Harvey sat out following his junior year for academic reasons. Michael Porter was thrown out of school following his junior campaign. I thought Hardy demonstrated the ability to be terrific as a junior. Inexplicably, Roberts refused to play him significant minutes. I particularly remember a game against Nova where Hardy had an incredible first half and Roberts sat him for a good portion to start the second half. Brownlee also didn't play significant minutes as a junior.

I could be wrong, but I recall James Scott playing two straight years and being rather disappointing for both.

Hatten was terrific right out of the gates as was Bootsy.

Boo might not have been as dynamic his first year as Hatten and Thornton, but he was still very, very good. His last year (after a year sitting out as mentioned after his first year) was just downright fantastic with several game winners in the last seconds.

My memory must be getting hazy, but I didn't think Scott and Lopez played together. I thought Scott graduated before Lopez arrived.

4 guys that made the pros and Charles Minlend shouldn't equal 14-14. No point guard and bad coach

Mo Brown listed at 6"5 ?. How about a foot shorter. I guess that's how he tricked Mahoney into signing him.

You beat me to it. I'm 5'9" (at least that's what I tell people) and Mo was no taller than me.

Seriously I know Scott and Felipe played that one year together but I really don't remember Scott having as good of a year as his ppg average shows on that link.

Thanks for jogging (or attempting to jog) my memory.

I could not agree more. I have been overheard myself at games screaming things like "PASS THE DAMN BALL' and "GET HIM OUT NOW"

He may well play out of control at time, but the fact is Ahmed's the only offensive threat we have in the forecourt.

I was speaking specifically of him on the court at the end of the game when twice he made dumb plays looking for his own rather than running clock.
I too think he launched the 3 too soon. But when Ellison made his 3 right before, early in the shot clock and it went in, he looked like a genious.
And that's how it should be. If you take a dumb shot, you better make it.

I thought this game showed that they can play man-to-man D effectively. If they put in the effort.
Bashir needs to recognize that he is part of a team and not force his offense so frequently. Would like to see him pulled when he plays selfishly. Practice FTs.
Actually think CM does a good job re:yanking players who are playing wild or selfishly. Seems like all have been victims. Hope they realize why they gave been pulled.

And Moses Brown's teammate Khalid Moore, the 6'6" shooting guard who can defend three positions, shoot from deep and whose floor game is improving nicely. A bit under the radar but not for much longer.

Was Moore at the game?
Indeed he was. Played well again today too. Floor game and defense are consistently excellent.

I think a lot of past players reside in the NY metro area. It would be great for the university to make a little fuss when they show up for a game. If a group of them are in the house we should make a big deal out of acknowledging their presence. I think it would add a lot to the atmosphere, and it is the right thing to do.

Duh, they honored the '59 and'65 NIT championship teams on the court. Butler game they acknowledged Willie Glass. ;)

Duh, It did not show that on TV. I think they should do all they do for past players. I didn't know or I would not have said anything.

I like that the Coaches are recruiting a local, good defensive player.

Oh. I think they know, and he generally meets them at the head of the bench and says a few words before they take a seat and the message is usually reinforced by either St. Jean or Mitch.

We try to set picks, but usually at the top of the circle with guys like Tariq, Kassoum, DW or Amar. They're just not as effective.

I'm not suggesting BA's perfect or should be immune from criticism or that he doesn't have flaws. They all have flaws. But there are people don't like his game and so overreact to his mistakes and are underwhelmed by his production. Someone on this board called him "a bust." He's averaging 12 points and 6 rebound, which is about what Brownlee averaged as a senior and what Ron Artest averaged as a freshman. Those are not apples to apples comparisons but they're pretty good numbers regardless. Nobody talks about the good things he does, they talk about why he should sit on the bench for his own good. Well, to bring things full circle, next time Missini dribbles the ball off his feet out of bounds which he does once a game I want to see a bunch of GET THAT MUSSINI OUT OF THERE!!!!      posts.

PS I think I remember Scott never missing, especially from the left baseline. But maybe that was Malik Sealy. Who knows. Some guy in short shorts never missed from there unless I conjured the whole thing from cloth. Which is entirely possible, as I couldn't tell you what I had for lunch two days ago.

I remember both of them but there was nobody who could drain it from the corner like Malik.
