DePaul, Mon. Jan. 16, 4:30pm, FS1/970AM

Whenever Lovett wasn't on the court he was riding the bike on the sideline. He doesn't always do that so I assume he might have a minor tweak.

He came up a little lame at the end of the nova game. Likely tweaked something there. He had an early bad turnover in the first half and was promptly yanked. He looked ok in the second half.

I think a lot of past players reside in the NY metro area. It would be great for the university to make a little fuss when they show up for a game. If a group of them are in the house we should make a big deal out of acknowledging their presence. I think it would add a lot to the atmosphere, and it is the right thing to do.

The 1958-9 and 1964-5 Holiday Festival and NIT championship teams were honored yesterday with a 2 hour (catered) reception (plus cakes from Lulu's)before the game and then they were introduced to the crowd with a rousing standing O in the second half.

Coach Carnesecca hadn't seen many of these fellows for years and throughly enjoyed himself

Barbara Lapchick attended and spoke on behalf of her late father

Lots of great names in the history of St. John's basketball

Someone needs to explain to me how Ellison is a 42% 3pt shooter and only 55% from the foul line. That doesn't make a ton of sense. Unguarded and 10ft closer you should be almost automatic if you shoot that we'll from 3.

I'm not ready to anoint him our next star just yet. But he had a very nice game today. Kudos to Malik E.

Don't think he will ever be a good shooter. Shot is messed up and he never shoots it same way twice.Doesn't matter. He can be a good BE player if he just cuts out dumb plays and really plays harder. I think he tries to do too much with the ball. Is a big guard with a decent handle and nice passer. If we get some bigs who can catch, he stays within himself and plays harder on D, he should be part of rotation for next 2 years.

As opposed to others on the roster he can actually accomplish the things that would make him better.

Spanarkle is right. There were 6 fouls on us and they put Garrett Jr on the line. Lovett fouled him dribbling at like half court.
Why was he shooting foul shots?

Refs F'ed that up
I didn't understand that as well and I believe CM brought it to the attention of the refs...don't understand why the 2 points were not taken off the board

That came 1 minute after they called an offensive foul on Garrett, and for some reason went to the monitor (we thought maybe they were looking for a flagrant), The ref then went to the TV announcers and said no foul on Garrett, foul on Ponds (which is illegal to do). When DePaul was about to inboud, two of the refs started talking, then just said no foul, which I'm still not sure is legal (It's legal to downgrade from a flagrant to a regular foul, but I don't think you can go from foul to no foul). I wonder if associate commish Stu Jackson got involved in that, since he was sitting right near where the second discussion was taking place.

After the game, I gave the refs the benefit of the doubt on that 1-and-1, thinking maybe the scoreboard was slow adding in team foul #7. According to the running timeline though, it was absolutely the sixth foul. Refs probably forgot to subtract the Ponds foul from their memories.

IMO, all three refs should be suspended for twice screwing up the rules.
You make a good point. I've never seen a foul called on the floor and reversed by a video review. I don't know why they did the review in th first place. And I, like you thought they were checking to see if it was a flagrant and couldn't believe it was reversed.

First call was a foul on Garret by the ref who was right on top of the play, then the second ref, who was on the opposite side of the court, rushed over and the fiasco began.

Nice solid win. But what was the deal with Lovett only playing 23 minutes? I realize his game was off, but still.... is he hurt?
from watching at home you could see Marcus head to locker room for extended period, so perhaps minor injury....although he did come out with different sneakers.

LoVett changes sneakers more often the the runway models during NY fashion week. :)

Duh, they honored the '59 and'65 NIT championship teams on the court. Butler game they acknowledged Willie Glass. ;)

Please get Ahmed off the court, are you kidding me!!

He may well play out of control at time, but the fact is Ahmed's the only offensive threat we have in the forecourt.

I was speaking specifically of him on the court at the end of the game when twice he made dumb plays looking for his own rather than running clock.
I too think he launched the 3 too soon. But when Ellison made his 3 right before, early in the shot clock and it went in, he looked like a genious.

Zach B corrected me. Moses Brown was not at the game, just his father.

Mr. B doesn't look particularly tall next to Zach. Wonder where Moses got his height from?

I thought this game showed that they can play man-to-man D effectively. If they put in the effort.
Bashir needs to recognize that he is part of a team and not force his offense so frequently. Would like to see him pulled when he plays selfishly. Practice FTs.

14 points, 7 rebounds three assists, get him off the court, let's give Alimakeawish some run, are you kidding me, several exclamation points.

Which of course gives him the freedom to jack and bull rush rather than run clock at the end of the game. But I understand the nuances of playing intelligent, winning basketball go right over your head. I wonder at your response had AA made such dumb plays.

It's a shame Bobby Kelly doesn't have any more eligibility, then you could watch nuanced intelligent winning basketball again.

And Moses Brown's teammate Khalid Moore, the 6'6" shooting guard who can defend three positions, shoot from deep and whose floor game is improving nicely. A bit under the radar but not for much longer.

There are two rules that "might" apply to this situation, but only one seems like it would be grounds for overturning a foul call (Garrett/Ponds):

Permit instant replay after a call has been made to determine if any flagrant foul has been committed and not just a Flagrant 2 foul.

Add “faking being fouled by an opponent” as a Class A technical foul. Such acts include, but are not limited to, flopping or sudden
movement of the head in an attempt to draw a foul. However, such fouls could only be assessed after an official has elected to use
instant replay to review whether a flagrant foul has been committed and, in doing so, sees a clear violation of the rule involving faking
being fouled.

First rule shouldn't apply, but maybe the second rule? did they consider it a flop on Ponds?

Sparnakle called it right he is a wild card. Don't know what he will do from possession to possession. Ellison is like that as well.
If we are better next year I wouldn't mind Ahmad coming off the bench. If he is playing well great, if he plays like a nut he gets yanked.

Have to give you credit for nailing it on Ellison. He runs hot and cold not from game to game, but from play to play. He has some things going for him regarding natural gifts of size and sufficient athleticism and a good basketball pedigree. One thing for sure is he actually improved a lot this year, making him the only returnee who can make that claim.

It's pretty [strike]nuanced[/strike] obvious that he forces things and doesn't always make the best decisions. But he plays hard, he rebounds, and he's the only big man we have who can score. Despite which he takes a lot of heat.

We've had a bunch of JUCOs who struggled their junior year and picked it up the next: Brownlee, Hardy and James Scott, of whom Ahmed reminds me more and more, to the extent I can remember 20 years ago.

I have said in the past I can see a James Scott last season for him. He has talent but he is frustrating to watch.
