Pitino's approach with this team (and last year's) is really very transactional. He has his favorites. They play and mostly get to play thru mistakes.

Everyone else gets coached very hard. And if you're in that group the only way you get out of it is to take a licking and keep on ticking until the coach is satisfied that you're tough enough to produce not matter what he throws at you.

Wilcher survived that. Not sure about Dunlap. They like Glover because they are satisfied with his toughness.

But you can lose some valuable players that way too. Concerned about Scott who I think is an essential piece for this team and who really needed to get run tonight and get untracked and it didn't happen for him (he got some PT but the rest didn't happen).

He might be dinged, I dunno.

To pick up on this half- finished thought from last night:

I think most fans my age or older come from the frame that you bring players in with the idea of keeping and developing them. And with that comes a certain long-term perspective that lends itself to how you coach players - not just for today, but for tomorrow and next season. You don't want to be too tough on kids who have potential or bury them on the bench because you will lose them and their potential, thus wasting the work you did to bring them in.

Moreover, coaches tend to be teachers, and teachers tend to be built to work and behave that way anyway.

Pitino has gone the opposite way last year and this one. If you are playing and producing the way he wants, then you are "in the club" and you get lots of rope. Jenkins last year, Kadary and Zuby this year.

If you are not in the club, then he's going to be tremendously hard on you. You will get pulled and yelled at for every mistake, sometimes you'll get back in and sometimes you won't, sometimes you won't play at all.

If you survive that mentally and play and produce the way he wants, then you can make your way into the club. Wilcher is just about there. Smith got in now.

If you don't, his view is clearly "fine, you'll leave and I'll get someone else."

That is pretty dissonant for us olds, it is not at all what we grew up with and watched for decades.

But in truth Pitino has adjusted to the modern era better than most. He isn't wrong - the players have an equally short term view. So there really is no sense in investing in players for the long haul when they won't be there for the long haul anyway.

It's very disappointing and dispiriting from a human and teaching perspective, but it is the world we live in now. Which is why Jay Wright, Tony Bennett, Larranaga, Nick Saban and other excellent coaches have bailed out.

I probably prefer the Kim English approach to the modern era (more positivity and salesman, similar to Shaka Smart) than Pitino's Darth Vader approach, but I can't say he is off base.

We won handily I guess. We didn’t cover the spread so I’m not sure this game helps our metrics any. How do we let that Camden kid shoot 9/11 from three??? Scott’s situation is concerning to say the least. Kadary still not playing like last year. Let’s see if they can beat Creighton on the road.

Camden is a smart guy. He was a Memphis recruit and then went to Va Tech. At that point he clearly decided that he had two choices: keep being a bench player at the high D1 level or go down a level, be a star, and then maybe get paid to go back to a high D1 program as a key piece.

We could even be that program!

LMF , I was thinking the same thing about Camden . Pitino has a nose about picking up guys who played on opponents , I.e. Scott , Richmond , Alleyne , etc .
The Camden we saw last night was the kind of guy that RP loves , ( Luke Hancock type shooter)
)
Instead of waving at Delaware Coaches and players , Rick should have been shadowing Camden until he entered the showers .
Announcers said he was a Senior but , if he has any eligibility left , Pitino should grab him .
He’s a 3 point shooter who is big enough to play at the BE level .
Last question . Was Dunlap on the bench last night ? I couldn’t see if he was or not .

Richmond 47% from the line
Some guys shoot 3’s better than Kadary shoots free throws .

Caught UCLA- Gonzaga . Zags got home courted decision from Refs . UCLA kid threw elbow , accidentally while making a lay up and got foul shot besides . Should have been flagrant 1 and 2 shots and ball to Gonzaga .
Nembhard came down with 2 point lay up , fouled and had chance to tie but , missed badly . Front rimmed it , like Richmond .

I believe he may be home rehabbing during break.

Thanks , I was thinking that too. But , then being St John’s , doubt crept in and started thinking he could be in California for Christmas and getting treatment from Cronin , Few , Stanford , USC, etc .
Dunlap is a smart kid . He withdrew his commit to ND when Brey was let go and came here .,
I would say Academics are important to Brady and his family .
But , I could be guilty of unwarranted speculation . Hope so , but……

I disagree . Taylor was a unselfish distributor in the front Court and very good at it .
He’s doing better at Oklahoma than Scott is currently doing here .
Taylor played hard every possession. Scott is bigger but , Taylor had heart of a Lion .
Just my opinion .
When you consider he is playing about 6 minutes more per game, Taylor’s numbers at OK are basically the same as at SJU except he is shooting far worse from 3 currently.

Scott by the way has basically the same stats as Taylor this year. And while Scott is in a shooting slump from 3 - as is repeatedly pointed out - his % is right around Taylor’s this year.

Again I was one of the bigger Taylor fans. But I think he is clearly a better player and a more versatile defender.

Reminded me of Julian. I'd take that.

We have our 3rd center dropping double digits and several guards/ forwards in double digits, we are going to be tough to deal with down the stretch. Our offense abs passing are getting a ton better which is big for us. Need to tighten up our defense consistency a bit, but we are more than capable. We are a very deep team wjth our bench wjth guys like Prey, Glover, Vince improving quickly. We are only going to get better and be ready to make a run. Time to show Creighton what we have next.

Yes, nuts for Kadary to try to improve shot! What was he thinking!

I have to disagree with you about our depth. Brady was a big part of that depth and he didn’t pan out to date. We go 8 deep at best and that’s on a good day. I think when we get to the meat of the BE schedule our depth or lack there of may be exposed and believe Rick will play the top 6 big minutes. We may have depth down the road but right now I don’t see it. And please don’t base your idea of depth on the game against Delaware.

We”ll have a better idea of our depth after the two games we play against Creighton and Butler. I’m pretty comfortable we will be able to go 9 deep throughout the rest of the year but the next two games against solid league opponents will be telling imho.

He only played 6 guys double digit minutes against Providence. I think we'll see that same approach the rest of the way home, unless it's a comfortable margin..

Not sure I see our lack of depth being “exposed” by other big east teams when most of them run 7-8 guys too
What does the depth of other teams have to do with the Johnnie’s depth. Posters on this site believe we have quality depth to 9-10 guys. But when the game has been close in the second half, Rick rarely goes past 6 players.

The term depth is overused on this board. While we have some players that will fill in with a minimal amount of damage, depth usually refers to players who contribute significantly.

I like our top 6/7 but after that it’s a crap shoot.

Guys, depth does not necessarily mean nine guys have to average double digit minutes. Take a look. Having six guys average 20 plus minutes and three guys average 6-10 mpg is the definition of depth and we will be right there

Who believes that?

In all of our games against high major opponents this year, we’ve only gone 7-8 deep in terms of guys getting significant minutes. One of those guys was Dunlap and he is now gone.

I highly doubt anyone believes we are going “9-10” deep in big east play unless we are blowing the opponent out. Maybe that was a hope before the season (or early on in season) but it’s obviously not happening. So not sure how that being the case is gonna cause our depth to get “exposed” later on
