Creighton, Wed. Jan. 4, 8:30pm, FS1/570AM

I think it's realistic that Lovett can contain Watson's speed with his own and stick to him.

I just hope that there isn't a meltdown on this board if we don't beat Creighton
This is going to be an "elevator" type season - lots of ups and downs
We need to keep our expectations within reason
This is a very young team that is just learning to play together
Now, next season,...........

I agree. I'm content now in just enjoying their ups and downs. The teams improvement in offense and even defense shows me Mullin is heading in the right direction. And with the strength of the Big East these kids can only improve with this experience.

The only thing that worries me about Lovett on Watson is his body to body defense after they cross half court. If he crowds Watson he will go around him, loves to drive. And that's when he hands off to Patton or scores.

To me, staying within striking distance with ten & change to go & thus competing is fine. Of course stealing one........

Crazy suggestion - Let Ahmed guard Patton occasionally to possibly negate his quickness & get a little physical with him. Just don't see Yakwe handling him. Owens, Williams & Ahmed alternating on him perhaps. Key is to box him out and try to push him out from bucket a bit. He gets it down low & trouble.

100% right. Patton cannot be allowed to get the ball down low. Has a right and left hook shot and doesn't miss any layups and putbacks. Owens and Williams have to fight to front him, preventing any pass in low. With a good box out he will go over their backs. Yakwe has no chance of stopping Patton.

Would love to see Lovett using his speed to draw fouls. Driving the middle trying to split defenders isn't working so well for him though. He needs another trick since other teams seem to be waiting for it.

As always, defense will be key.....but maybe more so against Creighton. They are a very accurate shooting team and without hands in their face they can absolutely torch their opponent. Despite Patton and Thomas, they are not a statistically strong rebounding team. It is not impossible for our guys to win on the boards.

In their only loss (VIllanova), they were out rebounded 37-22.

Since it's going to be a late night at Carnesecca, I had to come up with a plausible scenario.

Creighton has a lot of weapons' but bench is not super. Can we get key guy or two in foul trouble perhaps? Not so easy, but one area of weakness.

Zierden and Hegner are no slouchers off the bench. Two games ago they were deadly shooting threes, even though Hegner subs for Patton.

Lovett should practice the Jordan Drive, pull up and step back jumper.
That was unstoppable for MJ, could be for Lovett as well if he masters it.

He hit one of those against Depaul driving to the lower left. Around 45 second mark here:

Creighton is coming in at #10.
Would be an even better win then Butler

And a less likely one for the second youngest team in the country. It sucks that these guys are coming off a loss.

And much better guards than Butler, probably best duo in BE & future NBA big in freshman Patton. Daunting task.

At least our AD is active, been a while;

Anton Goff – ‏@AD_Goff_StJohns

We need the place to be packed with Johnnies. @StJohnsRedStorm @StJohnsBBall #homecourtadvantage #SJUBB #embraceexcellence

Active and asking (via Twitter) is a good start, but he's getting paid to develop and implement a plan on how that is to be accomplished. Time will tell.

If they really want it packed tomorrow, they should be giving away every remaining seat.

I expect us to loose the next 4 games and would be delighted to see us win any 1 of the next 4, which would leave us at 3/3 in conference play, with 12 games left before the BE Tournament.
As opposed to winning would love to see continued improved D, good ball movement , a good game plan , continued 20 minute a game contribution from Williams and for Yakwe to return to his freshman form. If those things happen the wins will come.

Agree. Our A.D. Wants to pack the house. How about an incentive. They offered $10 tickets for the butler game for Boy Scouts

I'm sure you'd love to see both. ;)

That said agreed only at Gtown would appear to be a game that we could expect the team to have a somewhat good chance at. Two top 10 teams and #13 on the road agreed are games we should hope for effort, execution and competitiveness from and if anything else comes of them that's not even gravy, it's hollandaise.

Actually, he has done that the last two games, and made both shots from the left baseline.

You never know what could happen on the road. They are excellent but I'm looking for three straight. Who would have thought after the LIU game this could happen.

Lets see if Lovett and Ponds has something to say about that.

I want to see them as a team drive to the hoop alot, maybe draws some fouls on Patton.
