Creighton Game #2

All home team fans favor their team re referee's calls but in the first Creighton game their fans conduct seemed over the top. At every contact they were screaming for a SJU foul and I thought their yelling influenced the refereeing in their favor.

I've noticed in general that what I refer to as the "corn field" teams, are very adverse to contact. Their fans aren't used to it at all and think the game should be played at an arm's length distance. This especially applies to Creighton and Butler.
Xavier is the complete opposite however.

Not a lot of corn being grown on the mean streets of Cincinatti, though they're not AVERSE to a "corn field" BBQ.

Not sure if you were kidding, but Cincinnati has had their share of serious crime issues, mean streets indeed.

I know this will be an unpopular post, but i believe it all works out in the end. I feel that we will struggle against Creighton at MSG and lose. I also see another loss in the cards, maybe Marquette 2nd time around. I do see us beating Nova and going 6-2 to end the season. A win in the BE tourny and that puts us at 21 and a legit bubble team. Our RPI and BPI will be solid so with 20 or 21 i think we are in. 6-2 is no easy task, but if we do, the committee takes into consideration hot teams and SOS, we have both in our favor. So, win or lose this sunday, we can do it. PS- If we win Sunday, I will be so pumped it would only place us in better position to the selection.
Go Johnnies!!!

I would rather not sweat it out with 21 wins. I'd still be a bit uncomfortable with 22. If we get to 23, I think we are definitely in. In 2011, all bracketologists had us in. There was no doubt on that final Sunday. I would love to be in that position again.

You never can tell if it's a year when the committee puts in several major conference double-digit loss teams, or whether they'll favor mid-majors with a much better record, so we really need to keep on winning. I don't think I'll be comfortable losing a game short of the BE finals. Championship week will be nerve-racking, since every high-win No. 1 seed that loses in their conference tournament potentially squeezes us.

And as I have raised several times before, keeping NY's team out of the tournament may suit ESPN.

The tournament is on CBS, though, not ABC. How much influence would ESPN legitimately have?

Wichita State was one of the most physical teams in the country if not the most physical last season, and they played Creighton three times.

I'd go on record saying that with less than 11 wins, only the most charitable of selection committees would give us an at large bid for going to the BET finals but not winning.

We will not lose Sunday at Madison Square Garden. Our guys will make up for the loss at Creighton. Let's hope we have a crowd there.

Put Dom mostly, or Sampson on McDermott. Man to man. No help. Defend hard. Rebound. Run at every opportunity. Push the pace and run them right off the court. Just like the Johnnies have been doing.

Right on. And double McDermott when he goes to the low post, even if it means we leave one of their guys open. But not Wragge. Don't forget Harrison did an outstanding in your jock defense against Wragge.

Harrison also did an outstanding job against Trevor Cooney in the Cuse game--shut him down in fact. Makes a massive difference when he's playing D like that.

I agree with that. This is one instance where I think Lavin actually out-strategized Jay Wright (who lost by almost 30 to them) and I don't know why we would deviate from that plan.

I concur. Also agree with Sampson that they need to start strong and not dig holes. The early poor perimeter shooting against Creighton hurt. If Sampson can get going early and Obekpa stays out of (early) foul trouble, that will be a difference maker and give Harrison more breathing room. I also noticed that McDermott does some sneaky things to the defender like digging his elbows into the defender when he goes up for a shot. He's really good at making it look natural. He did this to Pointer and Pointer got called for the foul. He got the Michael Jordan treatment by the refs in Nebraska. Hopefully it will be more evenly called in NYC. Either way Pointer has to stay cool as do the others.

As suited as McDermott is for the college game, I am not convinced he is going to be a great pro.

This guy can shoot from outside and take his defender down low. Reminds me of a Wally Szerbiak.

And he held James Bell from nova to 4 points. In my eyes he is one of our best defenders.
