Creighton Game #2

Who would people put on McDermott if we were playing man to man?

Dom because maybe just maybe they can get into fight and both get tossed

I'd waste a bench player for a fight, or else I'd say GG. Even if they didn't toss McDermott, GG could hit him hard enough to take him out.

The thing that GT did so well against Mcdermott was to beat him to his spots..The team should be studying his sweet spots, and make sure we beat him to his spots, especially down low..recognize the screens being set for him, and beat him to where he wants to go..

The thing that the only BE team that beat them, Providence, did was get him in foul trouble. If Karr plays like he has over the past two games that's a distinct possibility.

We have a history of letting guys go off on us. McDermott's "sweet spot" is anywhere from about 30 ft. on in.

i'll be there if we don't get snowed out. Big storm supposedly coming. :$

We have our own Weatherman here.

Weathermannyc needs to start posting weather updates on this thread

Maybe use up Christian's red shirt for it

Ridiculous to suggest we need to fight and take out a player to win. If we play smart like we did yesterday and crash the boards, play tight defense, and take high percentage shots, we can beat anyone! That was the formula I like many talked about before the providence game, and look how that turned out. Go johnnies!!!

I see you missed sarcasm

Can't wait for this game, Sec 104. Our pressure gave them trouble last week, I'm confident STJ will win by a touchdown. Moose, i'll be at Cafe 31 prior...

I agree with that. This is one instance where I think Lavin actually out-strategized Jay Wright (who lost by almost 30 to them) and I don't know why we would deviate from that plan.

I concur. Also agree with Sampson that they need to start strong and not dig holes. The early poor perimeter shooting against Creighton hurt. If Sampson can get going early and Obekpa stays out of (early) foul trouble, that will be a difference maker and give Harrison more breathing room. I also noticed that McDermott does some sneaky things to the defender like digging his elbows into the defender when he goes up for a shot. He's really good at making it look natural. He did this to Pointer and Pointer got called for the foul. He got the Michael Jordan treatment by the refs in Nebraska. Hopefully it will be more evenly called in NYC. Either way Pointer has to stay cool as do the others.

As suited as McDermott is for the college game, I am not convinced he is going to be a great pro.

Disagree. He's gonna be pretty damn good.

There is a long line of guys with his skillset that were either just okay as pros or washed out. It's very hard to determine what makes a great pro vs. college - I mean aside from the certainty of Red Auerbach, a lot of people questioned whether Bird could make it as a pro. Bird however, had a complete skillset, including tenacity and a mean streak, which included shooting, incredible passing, double digit rebounding, and a great ballhandler at his size. Still, its very hard to make the leap from college to pros without great athleticism. Everything gets bigger and faster in the NBA. I'm not saying he will be a failure, I'm just not convinced, but honestly, I haven't watched him play other than one great game.

Maybe not great, but solid.

Without saying, this is a very dangerous game for us. McDermott will be in a showcase arena, and I'm not sure we have a strategy to slow him down. I don't think you stop a player like that, unless you have multiple guys who are physically his equal or superior, and they harass him without burning 10 fouls too quickly.

Any thoughts on who should guard McDermott? Pointer? Sampson? Sanchez? It has to be someone capable of hawking him on the perimeter that he won't beat to the basket. I'd definitely guard him by committee, and give him a lot of different looks. I would also toy with using Jordan for short bursts on him, as long as he gets a little help if he takes it to the hole. Hold McDermott to under 25 on poor shooting, and we have a good chance to win.

I think they should play this just like we did in Omaha. Take Wragge out of the game and let McDermott get his 30 pts. Even with his 38 we still would have won that game if not for the bogus charge call on Jordan

I thought the call on Jordan was bad also, but I don't know.. I'm never in favor of letting the other team's best player go off. I still wince at the Final Four, where Georgetown keyed on stopping Mullin and Berry any way possible, and let everyone else hurt them. They succeeded, no one else stepped up big time, and it was never a game. I'd rather shut down McDermott and take my chances.

The best way for us to deter McDermott is to get the game at the pace we've had it at for most of the last 2 weeks. We weren't able to do that for the first 30 minutes against Creighton, when McD probably had 32ish of his points. When we made our run, with the game going up and down, he wasn't able to have the same impact and even made 1-2 critical TOs against the press.

When we are in half-court D just go hard at him with one of Sampson, Pointer, or Sanchez. Maybe a little GG. No Obekpa (let him stay home, McD spends too much time on different parts of the floor). Take everyone else out of the game again, just defend McD better. If he doesn't go for 39 again (and I like our chances) that strategy looks a lot smarter. Holding him below that figure + our enhanced confidence on offense compared to last game could put us in a better position to pick up a W. The counter is they will probably get more from the supporting cast this time around.

Has anyone heard if their injured pg will be back? There was talk on their board that he might be back for this game.

read the recap of the GW win over Creighton. Good strategy for us with a superior cast will work if we hit our shots. If we had gone 3 for 10 from 3 instead of 1 for 10, did a little better at the line and different ballgame:

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Isaiah Armwood is one of George Washington's top scorers and Sunday night he showed he's also one of the Colonials' best defenders.

Armwood got the job of guarding Creighton's leading scorer and was up to the challenge, holding Doug McDermott nearly 21 points below his season average to lead the Colonials to one of their biggest wins in years, a 60-53 victory over the 20th-ranked Bluejays in the Wooden Legacy consolation game Sunday night.

"We just tried to make everything tough for him (McDermott)," Armwood said. "We switched to man from 1-3-1 a little bit. We knew he wasn't that good off the dribble so we tried to limit his touches."

McDermott came in averaging nearly 28 points per game but finished with seven, ending a streak of eight consecutive games with 20 or more points that dated to last season. The last time McDermott was held to single digits was in a win over Indiana State on Jan. 5.

Ethan Wragge scored 16 points and Grant Gibbs added 12 for Bluejays (5-2).

"We gambled by not doubling (McDermott)," Colonials coach Mike Lonergan said. "They have like four guys who shoot 50 percent from 3, so we didn't want to let all those other guys get open 3s. Thanks to Isaiah's great defense, we got away with not doubling him."

It almost turned out to be a costly decision. Wragge scored just one 3-point basket in the first half, but scored 3 in the second half to help the Bluejays retake the lead.

While Wragge became a force from the outside, Gibbs used his big body to do some damage in the paint.

"We're the type of team that has to be absolutely invested in our game plan because we don't have incredible athletes, so every mistake we make is completely on us," Wragge said. "Moving forward, we have to be completely dialed in on both ends of the floor. Anytime we slip away from that is when we play poorly."

Gibbs tied the score 42-all with 8:26 left in the game and the teams wrestled their way to the finish.

Creighton pulled ahead 53-50 when Jahenns Manigat picked up Wragge's 3-point miss and scored with 2:14 left. The Colonials (6-1) regained the lead on consecutive layups by Kevin Larsen and Joe McDonald. They closed out the win at the free throw line, catching a break when Creighton's' Devin Brooks was called for an offensive foul with 14 seconds left.

Larsen led four Colonials in double figures with 14 points. McDonald and Armwood scored 12 apiece and Kethan Savage finished with 10.

Creighton entered the game shooting nearly 51 percent from the field, but the Bluejays struggled offensively from the start. McDermott, who averaged 28.5 points in the first two games of the Wooden Legacy, was held to four points on 2-of-7 shooting and the Bluejays shot 30 percent from the field in the first half.

Before Will Artino's reverse layup cut George Washington's lead to 25-15 with 6 minutes left before the break, Creighton had gone 4 of 15 from the field to start the game.

Artino's basket seemed to give the Bluejays some momentum. They converted two of their next three field-goal attempts, though they had trouble making defensive stops. The Colonials continued to keep the pressure up and took a 32-24 lead into halftime.

Looks unlikely. Read something about mid February, but this is all I found from 1/30.

http://www.jaystoday.com/article/20...ng-return-hopes-to-start-practicing-on-friday

The article indicates that he is expected back for Depaul on Friday. If all goes well, I would assume that he will p lay against us. If he's not at full speed, we need to try to take advantage of it.

Francesa was just talking about STJ's recent streak of good play, said we now have a shot at post season( thanks) and was wondering if STJ/Creighton would draw Sunday night at MSG. Minko added the play of CO and Jordan have been the keys to the turn around

Coach k already said he was a top 5 player this past summer at the USA red/blue scrimmages. Will he be an all star ? Maybe, but he will def be a serviceable player in the NBA. 6'8 with unlimited range and very high IQ. The only problem might be on the defensive end but hey look at Kyle korver, McDermott is a korver 4.0
