Creighton Game #2

They are a tough match up. Jordan on the kid who just came back last night. Harrison and branch on their other 2 guards. Leaves Sampson and obekpa to guard wragge and McDermott.

Creighton's offensive rebounding against DePaul was horrible. Big opportunity for us on Sunday.

Yeah I think we should play our bigger lineup in this one and not the 3 guards. Dom or Sanchez (preferably Dom) along with Opekpa and Sampson up front or Sampson, Sanchez and Dom to matchup better with Mcd and Wraggle. Guard the 3 point line and try to kill them on the offensive boards.

Their coach doesn't think anyone can stop them both:

"Doug keeps getting 30-plus," Greg McDermott said. "You've got a choice to make. The last two teams have taken Ethan away and Doug scored 39 and 32. So that's what we do. Put them on the same side of the floor and wish them good luck."

PG Grant Gibbs in 21 minutes last night had eight assists, one TO and seven points. Tough kid.

I say we do it again. We lost by 3, Nova lost by almost 30. Put Obekpa/Dom on McDermott all night. And capitalize on their poor offensive rebounding. We can't go 10% from 3-point range, either, like we did last time.

Did not see much of the Creighton - DePaul game last night, but from the little bit I did see, McDermott seemed to score from the paint more than from the outside. If anyone saw the whole, or most of the, game, did you see that too? Or it might have been just the several minutes I watched.

Yes, seems to be in direct response to Gibbs returning.

From the Creighton message board:
"Interesting that as soon as Gibbs returns, Doug gets a lot more of his points in the paint (or off of FTs earned from play in the paint).
When Grant was out, Doug seemed to do most of his scoring from the 3 pt line and on his mid range, Dirk Novitzki-esqe shots."

Doug had 9 fg's. Scored a bunch at the line. Melvin been missing a while. Nice player, and awful loss for DP.

He's a 6'5 210 combo with a bad knee and a history of injuries. I don't see how he stays in front of Jordan. That should be there all game.

As for McDermott, the way to go is definitely to take away all the other options and force him to make shots against your best defenders. Between Sampson, Pointer, and Obekpa, someone has to be up to the task. I might even try Jordan on him (with Obekpa in)...he plays screens better than anyone and could deny McDermott the ball on the perimeter. Run at every chance, make him run up and down the court, defend, run him through 40-50 screens. The kid is going to get 35-40 minutes and he just played a game Friday and took a three hour flight. Any stretch we don't run we are doing Creighton a big favor.

McDermott had a huge advantage with our guys never facing a scorer like him before with some home cooking from the refs. They know what to expect now.

Seth Davis of SI picks a loss. So, maybe that gives us a good shot to win this one:

No. 12 Creighton (18-3)* at St. John's (14-9)

Sunday, 7 p.m., FS1

Start spreading the news: Dougie McBuckets is coming to the World's Most Famous Arena. Hopefully New Yorkers will catch him while they can. McDermott is having a season for the ages, and I fully expect he will shoot Creighton past the suddenly hot Red Storm, who have won five of their last six games. St. John's boasts three of the Big East's top 10 shot blockers in Chris Obekpa, Orlando Sanchez and Sir'Dominic Pointer, but none of those guys can hang with Dougie on the wing. Then again, nobody can. That's what makes him so hard to guard yet so fun to watch.

*Creighton also plays Friday night, so their record will be altered before Sunday's game at St. John's.

Creighton 77, St. John's 70

I've got the Johnnies. Been playing better lately. RT @gregschneider: St Johns or Creighton at MSG?

Massive game. Must-win game for at-large hopes. If we start with good energy we can win this game wire-to-wire.

73-64 Redmen. We keep them at arms length all game. I think after the PC game these kids are realizing the benefit of coming out strong.

Hardly matters who we are playing. We are just about out of lives, and as Looie might say, it wouldn't matter if we were playing the Sisters of St. Mary, we have to almost win out. To have a reasonable NCAA shot we can only lose one more conference game, and we can't burn that one life with 8 to go. Backs to wall, come out strong and play hard, or basically know the season's over.

As long as we keep winning, every single next game is the biggest of the season.
