Cragg and the SJU “Culture”

People can talk about all the ACs they want., IMO until Mullin is gone this program goes nowhere!

Then again if Chris returns, which I believe, and Cragg can’t move him out, assuming he wants to, isn’t best option to make staff changes which stabilize current roster and position SJ for better 20 recruiting?

If Chris flops next year, an exit imo is easier for Cragg to figure out financially and otherwise. I guess Cragg has to play the cards he has been dealt as best he can at the moment.

I would love to see the 2 rumored AC's join staff with Mitch going back to his old role or leaving. That being said, I don't understand why some people have a figurehead coach. It's a big waste of money IMO. Let's be real, 95% of recruits have no idea who Mullin is and he doesn't have that instant name recognition like Kobe Bryant. If Kobe was our coach, you'd see a lot more recruits flocking just from the name like we thought we'd get when Mullin first came. Between seeing Mullin sit on scorers tables, skip out on Big East meetings, tie his shoes during timeouts while GSJ runs them, rumors of not recruiting, not seeing Femi, not seeing Curbelo, extended trips back to the west coast, etc. I just don't understand. The whole assumption was that his name would resonate with recruits. It hasn't. Again, I'm 29 about to be 30 and he was before my time. If he was before my time, just think about a 17 or 18 yr old kid being asked about him.

My point is, we are essentially throwing 2 million a year out of the window on the LIE instead of investing it in coaches willing to bend over backwards and dream about recruiting and putting in ungodly hours. Most if not all of us put in much more effort in our careers than Mullin and make a fraction of what he makes. Good AC's may help a bit but unless Mullin changes dramatically, I won't hold my breath for success IMO. The damage may already be done unfortunately because it's still way too easy to negatively recruit against Mullin. That being said, good recruiters should still find a way to get some talent here.

So Hsu is a guy that 99.99% of people on this site never heard of until last week and now he’s the supposed savior?

I'm worried about this site if Hsu comes. With the Marillac connection I shudder to think of how this will turn out.

What exactly is the connection, other than Marillac being either his agent or president of his fan club?

If Hsu comes and starts getting us some stud recruits, there may just be a big, beautiful Zaun-Marillac alliance in the works.

it starts with cargo making a real move, Mully loves this university and did the right thing. He came here with good intentions, the team improved every year, but its obvious that he is not a good coach. He should go out on a high note, walk away before it gets messy. Let the new guy assemble his own staff with help from the AD.

Let's just say philosophically for the moment, that Cragg wanted Mullin out. If that were the case, he'd discuss it with Gempeshaw and BOT members who are influential in athletics. If Cragg felt strongly about it, and was rebuffed, there would really be no place for him here and he would have to exit. Going to think that in his interviews he was given a full expectation of how autonomously he could act. The people who interviewed him are extremely high level who would not hire a guy and not give him the tools to succeed.

On the other hand, Cragg says he had other options for AD jobs, was completely aware of the situation here before he accepted the job. There was a 3 year history of program under Chris Mullin, and it didn't happen in a vacuum. Certainly if he had major concerns he may have raised them at that time, or looked elsewhere. Now I'm sure he got a better look this season close up and likely has formed ideas on how to improve the program.

I would hope there are some changes in the off season. I don't know if there is any new news about Matt, but he could very well be gone. If he isn't, it's still a wakeup call to have a staff that clicks on all cylinders and another recruiter added, and at the very least doesn't leave a giant hole if Matt departs.

Bottom line is, I think Cragg saw all the cards he was dealt before accepting the position.

Replace Mullin with Mahoney, Fran, Jarvis, Norm, Lavin and that exact same sentence has been repeated for last 25 years

You hit the nail on the head, yet again. And Matt is gone, and we couldn’t do nuttin about it. He’s gone. (Ah, any excuse to throw in a Goodfellas reference)

Marc Hsu is a win at all costs kind of dude. A straight hustler.

The kind of guy you want on your side until the subpoena comes. Just. Fucking. Win.
I don't know whether to laugh or cry
Even if the wins eventually get removed, you still get to enjoy the fun of witnessing them :)

Chris Mullin is one of in not the greatest player in St. John's basketball history. That should not be forgotten regardless of your age. That said, I don't see the program in much of a better situation then when Lavin was let go. I don't believe that Andy Borman and or Mark Hsu who are both relatively young guys with good experience can change the trajectory of the program on their own. It does have to start at the top. If Mullin returns he will either have to be let go/resign or given a contract extension at the end of the season. There are a lot of moving pieces here so at this point I will have to wait and see.

Close, but since I have been posting on here I would have to say that the fan base's favorite (unhealthy infatuation) assistant of all time would be:
1. Matt
2. Dunlap

In unrelated news my favorite Met 3rd base coach was Cookie Rojas

And where has the program gone in that time? It needs to be gotten right this time. Hopefully, it is not too late.

We'll have posters hanging breathlessly on Marillac tweets instead of Zach ones.

Mahoney 1
Fran 1
Jarvis 3
Norm 0
Lavin 2
Mullin 1
This is what we are. We make tourney once every 4 years or so. Is Mullin great? No, but you guys acting like he is a disaster have not been paying attention for last 25 years. More likely than not next guy will be worse.
