Cragg and the SJU “Culture”

I think Borman would be a real plus, but let’s see if they hire him.Rumor mill rampant with names like Hsu also, so hard to predict anything yet.

Re Figgy per Zach B
“I do not think he's going anywhere. Loves it at SJU, family loves him close to home.”

I know obviously it's way too early to definitively tell, but do you think adding Borman would put us in the driver's seat for NY Rens players like Tabor, Kuminga, and Cisse?

A lineup consisting of Heron, Simon, Figgy, and Mack/Williams would be solid. If Steere or Manuel step up at center, 2019-'20 could be a good year.

Bench?
Or we going to do the same thing again next year.

Starting 5:
G: Mack
G: Heron
G: Simon
F: Figueroa
C: Steere

Bench:
Guards: Wright, Trimble, Williams
Forwards: Roberts, Earlington, Carraher
Bigs: Manuel, Keita (for now)

On paper this looks like a much deeper team than last season. Obviously things are fluid and stuff can change.

The bench will never be that bad again.

Finally some good news. We could have a solid team next year if everyone stays on.
Excuse me while I hold my breath.
Ha! I'll add, who's gonna coach the team?

Unless, the new assistant (or two) can coach, then I don't expect much difference from--IMO--the worst coaching staff in the Big East.

I think its safe to say there will be at minimum 2 more departures. Just par for the course.

Then we are littered with question marks (transfers, guys who have played 5 minutes in their career, guys stepping up multiple levels of competition)

We very well might be a 500 team but saying that now is a bit much

Going into this year we were told that SJU had the best backcourt in BE and the most depth in years. My favorite was the numerous posters and certain writer that said it was the best team since Final 8 team. Then we had this thing called the actual games and reality and we quickly found out the backcourt was good but up and down, frontcourt outside of Figgy was a joke, depth was literally non existent as HS recruits were either not ready or in over their heads or both. Two big transfers Keita and Dixon were complete busts and after a non-conference schedule soft as charmin they repeatedly got exposed in conference play.

That about cover it....

Moral of the story is stop with the "if this happens and he comes back and if this guy turns out to be the next Lew Alcindor we may not be God awful next year...."
Chris Mullin is one of in not the greatest player in St. John's basketball history. That should not be forgotten regardless of your age. That said, I don't see the program in much of a better situation then when Lavin was let go. I don't believe that Andy Borman and or Mark Hsu who are both relatively young guys with good experience can change the trajectory of the program on their own. It does have to start at the top. If Mullin returns he will either have to be let go/resign or given a contract extension at the end of the season. There are a lot of moving pieces here so at this point I will have to wait and see.
Well-ordered comments, Andrew.
It’s very difficult for many on the Board to dump Mullin despite his poor HC record at this time, because he’s the legacy and face of St. John’s basketball.
That said, the way I see it, 2-3 new and exceptional ACs would jolt the program forward with intense focus on recruiting, roster construction and balance, x’s/o’s, and player development.
I would guess that MC and Chris had frank discussions and am hopeful that he realizes he needs help and is mindful that his reputation will take hits unless current trends are not reversed.
If changes are made and Chris succeeeds next year, he may extend his deal or he may step aside on a high note.
I’ve said previously, a good question is: What does Mullin want going forward? Does he see himself as coach through another 4-5 years beyond his current deal?
If next year produces uneven results, then Cragg has more leverage and that question, may have more import to Chris.
We shall see.

Just replacing Matt isn't going to cut it.

Everything hinges on Mitch. He's needed to go from pretty much the moment he was hired, but he's never needed to go more than right now. Great player, always enjoy his interviews on local 95.7 when he calls in, but he's screwing us at this point. Please just go home.

We should all be glad that Virginia didn't match up with SJU in the NCAA's then the bench would've balled out...

Roberts is a "key guy?"

Wow...
He's a key guy for me, along with any other name to be honest. I legitimately thought our roster was going to be Figgy, Steere, and Caraher next year with no assistant around to fill six to 10 spots.

Edit: Whoops, keep forgetting Wright.
And if we can pull in a key Grad transfer PG and maybe one of those rare HS recruits, even better.

You're probably right, but I think it's way better to have some optimism on here for once as opposed to everyone panicking about how we're going to have a 3 man roster next year with no recruiter, and everybody transferring.

Still not trusting that Simon one. And if he does come back I don’t think he’ll be happy about it.

Mitch being hired and his continued presence on the staff, even if he is doing it voluntarily and not getting paid, to me is grounds for firing Chris with cause. Seriously, it is intentional coaching malpractice.

Unless posters want to speculate negatively or blast Mullin, right? For three weeks you haven’t had a single problem with a poster issuing hypothetical ranging from players leaving to a total collapse. A little hope trickles in and all of a sudden you are the speculation police.

Your true colors are showing.
