What kills me is when the little bitch Hurley pulled the refs over, after that is when they started calling bs fouls on SJU, some of these refs (not just this game) need to be suspended. I literally seen where sju missed a shot, and uconn player got the rebound, Jenkins came from behind him but barely touched him if he touched him at all, I'm like you gotta be kidding me.
Hurley looks like a retard when he starts crying and arms are moving around, I'm like damn I'd be embarrassed to have a coach like this.

Everytime they showed Pitino I didn't see him working the refs, maybe he was when the cameras were off him, no idea.

Jenkins played 37 minutes. Jenkins is neither real point guard nor shooting guard. Pitino should use him less than 20 minutes. We played already 12 games. By this time, all fans and analysts know team's strengths and weaknesses. Pitino's team in this year has no shooter and no point guard at all.

Using RJ Luis as a point guard is even better choice than using Jenkins for 37 minutes of 40 minutes.

Pitino was furious at the way the game was called in the second half. I didn’t see any public criticism of the refs from him. However he was pissed that they stopped allowing the physical play underneath. How much does Hurleys crying play into these calls? Anyone have insight?

I wouldn’t call it a fan club. It’s people who know basketball seeing NBA potential/elite skill when they see it.

Nobody on this team and few in the conference look as smooth or athletic as him. Give Pitino a season of practice with him and Luis is a pro. No doubt
Charter member!! :ROFLMAO:
Just kidding but I assume you have seen Luis play a lot more than 16 minutes against a totally overmatched Holy Cross and the 18 minutes last night to make such a bold statement. If not, with all due respect, IMO you don’t know basketball, you are a serious fan perhaps but knowing the game, no.
And many on here raised Pitino’s development prowess to the heavens in declaring us a Top 25 team before we even had a practice so excuse me if I suggest some of you pump the brakes a bit.

Frustrating loss, because it really seemed like game was there for the taking and a win would have done wonders for our body of work.
Still more positives than negatives to take away including Luis looking healthy, Taylor gaining more confidence with his shot and Dingle hitting that huge three. Hope the team has a great Christmas and returns with wins over Hofstra and Butler.

What’s gonna haunt me from this one is Samson getting a finger tip on that oop to Soriano out of a timeout when the game was tied with about 3 minutes left.

Ugh! I wonder if we win this one if we complete that oop
believe that was Jenkins first turnover in the game.

Bottom line…… defense will get you so far but someone has to hit those threes especially on the road. The back court of Jenkins and Alleyne had a horrible shooting night. Make a few of those shots and we win. I also believe there will be way tougher road games to come. Sadly, with the way UConn played and not having Clingan, that game was very winnable.

Thought I’d take a look at the UConn site to see their reactions to us. Here’s an interesting summary:

Was at the game. Few observations:
  • Game sadly came down to who could deal with trash officiating better. Thankfully it was us. Val Ackerman is terrible at her job for a number of reasons, the officiating being one of them. The game was not UConn vs St. John’s but rather UConn vs the refs and St. John’s vs the refs.
  • Pitino outcoached Hurley in the first half (again, just like in March) but ultimately didn’t have the talent to compete for 40 min like the Iona game. He’s a HOF coach for a reason. Our staff lost the first 20 min.
  • Alleyne shot himself out of this one. Really wanted to play hero in his homecoming and thankfully for us he was 1-6 for 2 pts, mostly ill advised mid range shots. Love the kid, but though one for him.
  • Didn’t know what we would get from Singare in backup minutes but I was VERY impressed. Granted, it was far from perfect and he’s still very raw, but if he can give us 10 min a game even at a -3 +/- I’ll take that. Definitely a confidence booster and something for him to build on.
  • Castle was pretty much awful for the first 30 min but was huge down the stretch. Really wish he made that and one. I’ve been impressed with his attitude the whole season, and that allowed him to break out of his funk towards the end. His confidence with his shooting is absolutely shot still, he really needs to get it back ASAP as it unlocks the rest of his game. Very impressed with his ability to basically play the 4 and snag 7 boards. Shocked he’s only listed with 1 TO, I counted at least 3 but so it goes.
  • Joel Soriano was so unimpressive. I didn’t think he deserved First Team preseason but I respected him enough to think he’d be a major problem without Clingan. He wasn’t. And the fouls weren’t even an excuse for him. Just not dominant at all. Looked like he belonged at Fordham where he started his career. Slightly disappointed even we didn’t get to compete with a first team player but not going to be upset about it!
  • Glad Samson got his mojo back. And glad it happened early. He’s critical (uhh duh) with Clingan out.
  • Newton didn’t have his shot again tonight but a sneaky 15/9/6. Crazy he had that line and didn’t even really play well (4-14 FG). All-American gritty performance when he didn’t have his A game.
  • Props to Pitino for icing Cam out first half — don’t think he had a single 3PA. Finished with 15 (2-4 3) but Pitino did the best job scheming him out of his game so far this year. Hurley and co need to do a better job and creating plays for him to get open shots especially vs the zone.
  • Speaking of which, UConn continues to be allergic to a zone. Going on 3 coaches now. And they have the players to break it. So do it! How do they not gameplan for it?
  • Rough game for Alex. Never got into a rhythm. Thought his defense was pretty solid for his standards with his expanded role.
  • Crowd was awesome. Old Mall was rocking!

Soriano took 5 shots tonight. He didn’t only touch the ball 5 times.

Truthfully, I think both things can be true here. We need to feed him more, and work on cleaner entry passing. But he also needs to want to take more shots. No more dumping it down to Chris Ledlum under the hoop with the game on the line

I also would love to know what the % is on how often Soriano is doubled on his touches. Cause that’s another part of this that is going to impact how many shots he gets
The fact that Soriano is unselfish and will try to make smart play when doubled makes Jenkins and Ledlum hoisting up terrible shots that much more annoying.

Post game Hurley on Johnson sticking around and so many “advisors” getting in kids ears to transfer. Frank he is;

In 12 games Jenkins has jacked up double digits shots 9 times.
TWICE he has mad 50% of his shots
Has shot 20 more attempts than our best player and most on the team to average 11.
If he was a Hatten, Hardy or Ponds type scorer and Soriano didn’t exist that would be fine. He is not any of those and Soriano exists.

Sorry folks, but this team will live and die with Jenkins getting 30+ mpg at the 1. Coach needs to talk to him about taking so many shots, however. As many have mentioned here already, too many bad shots from him and not nearly enough attempts from our best player. That needs to change if they have aspirations of playing in meaningful games in March. Soriano needs to become a little more selfish and try to carry the team on his shoulders a little more.

Pitino should listen to people who are concern that Redstrom rely on Jenkins too much. He is a senior and will be gone after this year. If Pitino continue to use him 37 minutes of 40 minutes with his too much overrated basketball skill, Our 4 star freshman Wilcher will transfer to another school.

Some people said in this Forum, Wilcher is not ready for Big East yet. Jenkins is also not ready for Big East, too.

The kids played their guts out last night. The game was definitely officiated differently in the second half, and it had a big impact on the game. I don't know about anyone else, but it sure seemed like they missed more than 7 free throws last night - was surprised when I saw the stat line for that. If they did better on the line, who knows how it turns out? Also, Jenkins cannot shoot 13 times, while Soriano only shoots it five times. Jenkins is horribly inefficient in his play. Bottom line is that the Johnnies can play with anyone. Can't wait to see what the team looks like in February.
