Coaching Decision Poll

SJU also needs to give Lavin the tools that he needs and spend more money on upgrading the facilities, which I hear is also a problem.

I don'tbuy tha the facilities are a problem. Taffner is relatively new and was a big upgrade over what we had before. CA is a dump but we are not gonna build a 10,000 seat arena on campus. We play a majority of our games at the Garden. It was just totally renovated and is a great place for a basketball game. Better dorms for athletes (like UK)?

Actually, the building of dorms hurt our local recruiting
Years ago, local kids were eager to come to SJU to pocket the cost of living stipend
Dorms have been great for out of town recruits, not so much for NYC area kids
As for Taffner, my friend saw it for the first time this year and thought it was a dump

Unfortunately Taffner is no comparison to the world class facilities being built or already built at the major schools

How many have you visited? ;)
A weight room is a weight room. You lift them up, you put them down. Having 60" televisions lIke a sports bar has yet to be proven to get players in better shape. It's the people in those facilities that make them great.

I haven't seen Taffner, but there are some sick facilities around the country. Even the new one at Cornell is awesome.

You haven't seen Taffner?
I take it you have not been to campus in many years.
It is not Fun's daddy's St. John's any longer.

I find it amusing that we all have opinions about the disposition of the coach, some folks with stronger feelings than others. What do the seniors who spent 4 years with him fighting hand to hand combat against our opposition think of said coach? D'Lo who most on the board said grew up in the program said he is going to call him every day. I have not heard one negative comment from any player Senior or underclassman about him........interesting.

So the players like him as a person so we can't have an opinion about his body of work as a coach? That's interesting as well

Jack, I might be wrong, but I think it goes beyond liking him as a person. Where would Harrison be if Lavin didn't have the guts to confront a major problem when it showed itself. Many coaches, I think might have looked the other way, to improve their own numbers. He may have an unorthodox way of coaching, but I think he does more coaching than we realize. No he doesn't have sets that he runs, but he gets the kids to play their guts out for 40 minutes a night. I do have a gripe with him and it is that he is responsible for having no bench, no reserves, no premium players for next year other than BS. The kids would go to war for him. So I think it is more than just liking him. If they didn't think they were getting coached, you would have dissention on the team that I just don't see.

That is fair and also a good point, frank.

But the point remains, we can still hold Lavin accountable for the post season failures he has had at SJU, especially with money he has been paid.

The season has ended, and it's a great time to look at the body of work, and make a decision. Some people think I and others have too high expectations for the program. I really don't. I just want to make the tournament 2-3 years out of every 5 and win a game every now and again. We've been blown out to end every season under Lavin. Gonzaga, Robert Morris, SDSU. Tired of it and want a change. Look at Xavier, we swept them but good coaching and POST SEASON wins in the bet tournament put them in a better position to win in the NCAA's. Lavin hasn't delivered during his tenure in my opinion. And now is a great time for a change because with or without him next year we will probably be bad. So as I said before great time to pull the band aid

Wichita state up qo on Kansas w 645 to go.

Give Marshall whatever he wants and let him be the coach. That's going from a 74 pinto to a brand new Ferrari.

Marshall has made it clear he would only leave Wichita State for a very high major job per articles on the subject. STJ does not qualify . He already makes 1.75 mill per as well.

We are a high major. - We won the big east regular season and went to the final four in 1985.

First of all, this poll means nothing in the grand scheme of things and has no effect on what will happen. I know this is a blow to all, yesers and noers alike... I think back to all those posters here, who actually blame other fans for the performance of these players and this Coach...Pray for them..
Then there are those who are posting today, if Lavin comes back and Jordan comes back and sadly, those misinformed who are actually lobbying for Obepka to return next year.. Desco should disqualify all those who remotely expressed any interest in this player returning as UNFIT TO REGISTER A VOTE.

2 days ago, CO was being portrayed as the culprit of all time. Now, the lunatic fringe is actually touting that as being a viable part of our team next year? GOD needs to talk to these unfortunates.

And, for those who have forgotten.. Lavin achieved his 5 season record with the 3rd ranked recruits he enrolled. The guys had some talent, albeit some overrated but, still in his best year Lavin finished 5th in the league

UCLA fans, for those not aware, warned us that Lavin had taken Final 4 talent to the SWEET 16 A BIT OF A UNDERACHIEVEMENT.

And, who can forget Baron Davis's quote on his teams finish, "Yeah we could have done better, if we actually had a Coach!" BARON'S WORDS NOT MINE.

And, so it goes on..

Many here, in just 2 days have completely forgotten the fact , that Steve Lavin is not a good Coach of the game of BASKETBALL. .. he hasn't put a team together that has any understanding of the game because, he doesn't either. DLO, POINTER, GREENE, JORDAN all deserved more from their Coach on the BB court. He failed them in that regard.

Helter skelter might have worked if he had the talent of GOLDEN state Warriors but, even then, it is suspect.

Even, if LAVIN brings in best talent in the BE conference, he won't know what to do with it, except the same old, elementary pick and roll.. Our results will never reach any sort of Championship Play under his guidance...

And, a last word for those who are using the Roberts years as a standard to evaluate the Program under Lavin, DON'T. That is not the passing grade standard!

BTW, for those watching at home, Kansas getting blown out by Wichita State.. Norm and Chuckie Martin, clearly in TV VIEW during the time ours, etc.
Chuckie is at Indiana. Fred Q is also on KU staff & getting TV time.

You're kidding right? Marshall said "something really big". I think that's a list limited to a select few high majors. BE may still be a major but St Johns isn't "something really big".

We're in the social media era where kids more so now than ever think they are superstars before even hitting campus. You better believe they not only want, but expect nothing but the best of everything

My mistake. Thanks for correction. I always got the 2 mixed up here too. My bad.

Taffner is nice and a definite upgrade however as I stated in another post, it is supposed. To be based on the Knicks facility however, IMHO the size of some of the facilities are small and cramped. Still overall a nice place and yes, I have seen other facilities.

Chuck Martin is in his first year as an Assistant Coach at Indiana. Fred Quartlebaum is the former St. John's Assistant Coach who is in his first year as an Assitant with Kansas that you are referring to. His star has fallen as he was considered an up and comer when he was an Assistant with Matt Doherty while at ND. He followed Doherty to UNC and then joined Norm here.

Wow. I am really surprised at the vote. Now I feel nervous that SJU is going to extend him.

The reasons to keep him seemingly don't add up.

-He has improved the program (we are now essentially back at square one)
-We can't do better (Miller and Hurley would get huge salary increases to come here)
-He is a good guy (I agree, but doesn't help us)
-He is a good recruiter (perhaps, but he has recently been the BE's worst recruiter)

I sincerely hope we move on. I am excited about the prospect of being excited again. An extension, in my opinion, would only result in more mediocrity and a continuation of the circus show.

He really never lost the stink of Doh. Have I ever mentioned how I feel about Doh?

I think we would need a separate thread on that one with many chiming in.
