Coaching Changes

Per Pat Forde

"Just saw men's basketball committee member and LSU AD Joe Alleva at arena in Louisville. Said LSU is not making a change in basketball coach"

That's like a Lavin situation. Everyone knows he is a poor coach, but they are going to ride out his recruits for a few underachieving years.

Not surprising, given Louisiana's fiscal crisis and the new governor's comments about LSU football and state-funded athletics in general. If Jones is let go, the school would have to pay him through 2019 (assuming all or most of it is guaranteed). To add a new head coach's salary on top of that -- especially they go after someone who's been successful at another Division I program -- is likely prohibitive at this time.

All the more reason for BSamp to transfer
Jones clearly can't coach his way out of a paper bag
He won't get much better nor get much media attention playing at LSU

Iona and Tim Cluess have agreed to a contract extension to keep him as their head basketball coach until 2021 as per Vin Parise

Gary Parrish: "Every single person I've spoken with believes Mick Cronin will be the next coach at UNLV. But it's not done yet".

Per Rothstein;

Rutgers head coach Steve Pikiell will hire Buffalo's Donyell Marshall as an assistant, sources told @CBSSports. Both have UConn ties.

If they weren't so pitiful that would enough reason to hate the Scarlett Knights.

Hated those UConn teams, but have to give props to Donyell Marshall. He was one helluva player.

No doubt he was a great college player, but he was a Huskie so barf.

Here's the story from that game I was ranting about in a previous thread. 20-20 from the line for a team that scored 85 points. Ugh.

http://www.nytimes.com/1994/01/16/s...ohn-s-can-t-stop-marshall-or-connecticut.html

Interesting points from the story. First UConn win at MSG in 20 years. Garden full for the first time since UConn visited two years earlier (god those days with the damn bus full of cheap drunks sucked). Donyell was shooting 68% from the line coming in and STJ lost by 4.

I was at that game. I still point to it as the beginning of the precipitous decline that is SJU basketball.

First losing season in 31 years. The effective end of the Louis era after 16 dances in 18 years plus one NIT championship for good measure.

Army's Zach Spiker & Lehigh's Dr. Brett Reed both took themselves out of the running for the open Drexel job. Bashir Mason of Wagner was also in the mix.

Per Goodman:

Saint Louis candidates: Travis Ford, Joe Dooley and Bryce Drew, per sources.

Has Dooley done it with his own players down there?

Drew seems like the pick to go with. Dayton seems like a certainty when the BE goes to 12, so St. Louis needs to get this hire right to stay in (or re-take) top position for the other spot.

Didn't we pummel one of his teams at the garden by 30+?

Excellent memory, gman: 90-57 at MSG on Feb. 1, 1992, Marshall's freshman year. The following year at MSG, we won 72-59.

The 90-57 game was also on Malik's birthday, and he celebrated by putting up something like 25 and 17, a career high for rebounds.

I agree. Although he grew up in the area and went to Pitt, I can't imagine he would leave Arizona for Pitt.

My wife and her family are huge Pitt fans. For their sake, I hope it works out.

Archie could be a possibility. Different Miller OK?

Yes. Before the Sean Miller news, most Pitt fans expected Pitt to bring on a mid-major D-1 head coach. Archie would be a great choice, especially given his Pittsburgh ties. However, reports are he declined. Apparently, there are issues between the Millers (including the dad who coaches in the area) and Pitt. I'm not sure what they are.

The dark horse is Brandon Knight. He was endorsed by Jamie Dixon and the players want him as well.

You don't forget a beating like that. I remember being late (as usual with my dad...) and we were up huge when we arrived.

Zagoria just apologized for his Marshall to Rutgers so op for AC role. Apparently DM is being considered for Central Ct. State HC job.

Per Jeff Goodman

Army coach Zack Spiker emerging as the leader for the Drexel job, source told ESPN. Former Drexel assistant Geoff Arnold also in mix.
